Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

It's not so much about getting "reinfected" as it is about reactivating the virus.  Rather than assuming that someone who is no longer ill is totally virus-free, I think people should be looking at the possibility of having a virus go dormant or go into remission, the way an autoimmune disease might do.

Of course, since COVID-19 has proved to be something of a 'moving target' with new symptoms and mutations being discovered on an almost daily basis, we should all just admit that no one yet has complete understanding of what we're dealing with. Don't give people false hope or false facts.  As is the case with HIV, just show/educate people on how to determine their risk factor and how to protect themselves.  Obviously there is no magic formula.

This may not allay fears for a long time, but every town, city and municipality must begin with meticulous cleaning of public spaces on a schedule.  Most public spaces that I've ever been in every country has been quite filthy. There are exceptions but they are usually that...exceptions.

Touchless technology will need to become the norm. The act of pressing buttons on an ATM machine at a bank or supermarket checkout needs to become a thing of the past. Public restrooms need to retrofit so that all dispense with the need to touch anything. I've been to places like this but those were rare spaces.

Theaters and stadiums that allow spectators may very well be among the last places to open.  Hey, if you or someone you know are the last drive-in movie lot owners, then expect a windfall as this is probably a great time to own a drive-in movie theater!

There is a study released out of Yale that saliva produces more accurate test results for coronavirus than nasal swabs. This may actually take some of the fear/reluctance out of testing.  Like I said before, testing and knowing one's status is likely the key to curbing/lowering the spread.

Let's all just hope that the next mutation will involved a much weaker, far less contagious, and less deadly coronavirus.

COVID-19, in particular, needs to mutate into nothingness.  A wish, I know.

There is also the possibility of effective therapeutics/antivirals.  We have tamiflu for the flu. They will eventually come up with something for this.

Notice a lot of these experts seem to think this will follow the pattern of the flu and be with us seasonally for a long time to come.  The flu doesn't really disappear in summer after all, it just isn't as prevalent.

Would it surprise any of us if we come up with a vaccine that is similar to the flu vaccine in the sense that they have to figure it out every year and it's often only 40-70% effective? Then we have the people who are either anti vaxx or just too lazy to go get it.  We should make these vaccines (and the flu one) free and easy to get as soon as they become available too. I doubt we will though because socialism is bad.

I'm not sure what to think on this topic. When you look at the projected number of people who are going to starve thanks to this plague the numbers are pretty grim. I mean world wide, not the US. I feel like all we can do is rely on experts to figure it out. It's not like the US will help these people in any case as long as 45 is in charge.

Big changes in Germany: As from tomorrow, everyone (except small children) must wear a face mask when using public transport and inside every store. This rule becomes effective in all 16 German states.
In some states, you will be fined between 10 and 150 Euros if you get caught without a mask.

The government wants to introduce a Corona Tracing App soon but since data protection has always been a big issue here, many people are opposed to the app.

Even though the number of cases has decreased steadily, there's still fear of a second wave hitting the country – especially after most shops were allowed to re-open last week. I guess we'll know in 14 days.

In the NYC metro tri-state area, it is mandatory to wear masks in public spaces.

I'm not sure whether you've seen this article but the comments about the "prevention paradox" and worries about a second wave of infection in regards to opening up from a lockdown are interesting.

By the way, this man was one of the people who discovered, tracked and advised on the SARS pandemic, so he has a considerable range of knowledge on the matter.

His insights on the possibility of having other coronaviruses that protect against COVID-19 is an intriguing one.

Yeah, they've pretty much ruined "YMCA" for all time.

I figured the whole Paycheck Protection Program was a flat-out scam, so I'm not surprised to learn most small businesses have been shut out, or that this disproportionally affects businesses owned by minorities and women.  I'm just so tired of the GOP's blatant disrespect of everyone who isn't white and rich and old.

    • Here's the Days ones: https://www.jason47.com/days/synopsesdsn1974A.html
    • I think Dani cares about her sister, but I agree with you. She's using this whole mess to be heard and make herself feel better. I wish Ted and Eva told her to fck off. I had to laugh when Dani commented on her and Anita confronting Ted. She acted as if they destroyed him. That's not what I saw. Dani has been dialed back from those first weeks, but I can't say she's likable. As long as she's throwing shade at Eva for her work as a hairstylist -- while ignoring that she did nothing except eat celery sticks and walk the runway -- she can kiss off. Barely tolerable, and Lindstrom is terrible in the role. I don't find him scary at all, and his money laundering plan is stupid as hell. I gagged when he texted Vanessa to ask if she was thinking about him. That's throw up time.   I just don't see how that makes Ashley any more interesting. And are we really asking for another storyline where a father connects with his adult daughter? I know there's no direct parallel to Eva's story, but come on. If you're in the minority, I'll join you. I have zero interest in any of that. -- I still fail to see Nicole and Vanessa as best friends. Nicole is grounded and stable and responsible, and Vanessa is not. It made more sense to have Dani and Vanessa being close. -- Ashley and Derek were actually OK today. I feel sorry for the actors, honestly, because they've been given nothing. It's crazy, because so much of the rest of the show is firing on all cylinders.
    • Same. But given how the writers like to have her have good moments and bad moments...and Dani has been background as of late...it's about time she had some bad moments.
    • I don’t even know why you responded to the bait.
    • I only watch for Sharon and she’s barely on. The only good thing going at the moment is Jack and Diane scenes and they’ve made Diane such a wuss lately which is making that unbearable to watch too
    • I feel like Earl Hamner and his crew brought in Richard* BECAUSE they knew almost right away that Robert Foxworth was so dull as Chase.  At any event, Richard, IMO, proved to be much more interesting as Angela's chief adversary. (*Or brought him back, depending on whether we're including the original "Vintage Years" pilot).
    • And it will also eventually air S2, which will air its finale in Canada this Thursday, May 15th! https://tvline.com/news/law-and-order-toronto-criminal-intent-season-1-2-the-cw-1235449356/ As an American that has managed to watch it in real time, it's very good. Frankly, I think it's the best of the L&O franchise as of now.
    • You are getting like me. It's getting to the point that without any Damian sightings...it's been the fashion that is holding my interest. And it should not be that way at all.
    • I don't mind Jan either. If anything, they could be using her more to get her daughter's POV. Not to mention her role as one of the Have-Nots.    I also don't mind the local talent. Just look at soaps that were in NY or the shows that film there, they always go for the local talent and we get to find new faves.
