Y&R and B&B March Spoilers

I will say there’s always sensitivity about making characters who are homicidally insane and child abusers (like Thomas) LGBTQ, especially on a show that has resisted showcasing queer characters for years, even as it was set in an industry known for queer representation.

Which is stupid, honestly. If Luke can rape Laura and then have the show turn that trauma into one of the greatest love stories ever told then complainers can shut it. Hell, Todd led the gang rape of Marty Saybrooke back in the day and he turned out to be one of the most popular characters on soaps for the greater part of the 90s. People live to complain, IMO. Sure, different times. Doesn't change the actions of the characters. Heck, EJ even raped Sami who was raped as a teenager even yet fans clamor for those two even today. LGBTQIA+ people are after all human. They can be good and bad. Lovers and killers. One can't clamor for representation and then when they get it, call foul on the portrayal. I get it, but I also get it. If that makes sense.

I think the key is that there have been thousands of portrayals of heterosexual characters over time. The very first fluid male character on B&B is a crazy child abuser (albeit not sexual), which plays into every damaging stereotype of queer men? It’d be like if B&B never had a black character yet decided to make the first one a drug-dealing gang member. Do black drug dealers exist in society? Of course. And they can be just as complicated and interesting as any other character. But such a move would be deserving of a side eye.

Exactly.

Besides, one shouldn't take the industry most dysfunctional storylines as an example to follow. Those are exactly what caused the demise of daytime drama.

As far as B&B goes, one could argue that pretty much every male character has committed some heinous crime (Ridge killed Phebe's attacker, Bill did so many despicable things etc) - everyone except Liam, of course. However we all remember what happened to Adam Newman around the time the first actor left the show, and we don't what to see that ever again on any show.

Totally. And Thomas’s reign of terror was *so* extreme and so fresh in our minds. If he were the four or fifth gay/bi/fluid character in the show’s history, I’d perhaps feel differently. But making Thomas queer would just be inseparable from the luridness of his behavior, which would be homophobic IMO. Trust me, I don’t love these things dictating the art people make, especially as a reflection of reality. Anthony Langford on Twitter said it was unacceptable for a douchey male character to tell a lesbian that “she just hadn’t met the right man yet.” I disagreed with Anthony’s statement entirely. But I just feel like Thomas is the wrong character to make fluid at this point.

How to get around that?

Bring back RJ and make him gay or bi. That could actually provide some good conflict for Ridge and Brooke too, without having someone try to come between them and break them up for the millionth time. RJ can be torn between Vinny and Coco Spectra or some other girl. At the same time, have Vinny turn to RJ because Thomas rejects him, but over time Vinny actually starts to fall in love with him.

I agree. The story writes itself, really. Which is why Brad will never go there.

As for Thomas, I wouldn't worry. Brad tried to be so PC with Maya (also consulting with GLAAD) that ultimately it suffocated the character. I'd like to hope he would be equally PC with a gay male character as well.

BTW did Jared turn out to be straight eventually?

@Aback Ugh. Maya/Myron. It was bad enough that B&B FINALLY had a black lead female character (it took years to figure out what to do with Maya) and then Brad turns her into a PSA. IF they could've played the story through - $B tabloids (FC lead model a dude!), not have every character, including C2, applaud her, Charlie being the first one who figured it out, Rick being completely OK with it after a few days, same with Carter, etc. This could have been great and compelling storyline by balancing support and haters (other than the belated arrival of her hateful father), discussing sexuality, etc.

Honestly, if they paired Thomas with Vinny, they'd have to be locked together forever since gay couples on TV are met with huge backlash if they are spit up because somehow that never happens with straight couples or in the real world. If people truly want gay, bi, fluid characters to be represented equally, they've got to get past making them 'pure.'

Let them have their first proper B&B gay character - not flawless, but certainly not a sociopathic freak either - and then they'll have a right to tell all the stories they want with a gay character.

If Thomas were just your garden-variety schemer or corporate raider, let him be gay/bi/fluid all day. No need for him to be a saint. But in their quest for a ratings bump, they went too far with Thomas. They made him a monster.

you cannot in all seriousness single Thomas out as "homicidally insane" or "abusive" with this cast of characters he's surrounded by. That's what makes this SL so stupid... what has Thomas done that any worse than anyone else on the show? Really? Nothing. His storyline literally boils down to being in love with Hope, and he hasn't even *DONE* anything that horrible in name of that love.

Gosh. You’re right. Throw another sociopath on Bradley Bell’s dumpster fire. And if people want to watch Matthew Atkinson’s sculpted physique bumping and grinding with another dude, let them have it. Love in the afternoon, as ABC used to say...

    • So, I have been in the hospital all week. I am close to being up to date on my soaps. Now I have to go to the Infusion Ctr daily to get IV antibiotics, for 6 weeks. I am frankly exhausted. A hospital is no place to be when you're sick. Hooked up to machines that go beep beep beep all day & night long. Someone wakes you up every hour on the hour for something, either to stick you with needles or to take your gosh-awful blood pressure for the umpteenth time. So, you don't get any sleep. Now I have a central line, upper right chest. After they "installed" it, I said, I am now Borg. They just stared at me. Apparently scifi is not general knowledge. What happened? I have an infection inside my big toe right foot & it burned the skin on my foot. The burned skin is already better. It was like a bad sunburn. The infection inside the toe is the issue. Oral antibiotics won't even get its attention. So, IV antibiotics plus time.

As Salem bids farewell to John Black on Monday, the "Days" family and fans say a final goodbye to Drake Hogestyn.   From his time as a young man playing baseball in the minor leagues for the New York Yankees to his almost four-decade run as John Black, Drake always did his best. And, while becoming a soap opera icon, he spent almost 40 years at "Days" telling the best stories and taking the younger cast under his wing to make sure they would do their best as well. Thank you, Drake, for the legacy you have left for everyone at "Days." The impact you made on the cast, crew and fans will never be forgotten...and that's a fact.
    • I found an interview with Joseph Breen (Will Jeffries) where he mentions that Reva was put in a coma so Zimmer could go to Hollywood to do a pilot (OMG, if ONLY it had been picked up, LOL) and that Sonni and Josh and Will became a popular with the audience while she was out of commission.  If you want to read the whole thing: https://www.authorsden.com/visit/viewarticle.asp?id=47394 Breen was known for being very candid in interviews, I wish I could find more of them. I seem to recall he made a couple of snarky comments about Zimmer, implying she was not above acting like a diva. Sounded to me like he had a lot of respect for Forbes (who went on to have a very strong and varied career after GL).
    • I was so confused why Devon was prying into Nicks love life and then it clicked and I remembered they’re brother-in-laws. Shows how little I pay attention to this show anymore. I was like uh? Do these two even know each other this well?
    • The Bell soaps, B&B and Y&R: cannot watch. If I went by the last time I did I would have to give them both D- but I really don't think it counts when you're not a daily watcher.  DAYS: B+ (Now this is with the knowledge that for years I have given this show a D- because I've been a fan for too long to give it the F it deserved.) GH: A+ (With Korte driving this bus to me the show is so much better! IMO we just had the best NB in so many years I cannot count!) BTG: A solid (Things I love, a few I do not, nothing I hate, still find it in general remarkable.) As always, thanks for doing this thread. I count it. I always look for it & I always post.
    • Okay, I continue to maintain that what is so good about this particular reveal followed by umbrella storyline is that you can see & understand many different points of view where there is not one bad guy or one 100% right person.  About your stated opinion, that Lois & Gloria did the right thing, you know that this was technically an illegal adoption? For it to have been legal the father, if known, would have to have been informed & have signed off on terminating his own paternal rights. And, of course, it is clear how many people they lied to.  Personally I feel like Lois is going to take the biggest "public" blame with Lulu a close second in the blame category. I am looking forward to a tongue lashing I hope Brook Lynn gives to Gloria. I continue to be more than annoyed with Dante. First his attitude toward Gio with regards to Rocco & a drinking game & its results. Second his attitude toward Lulu. Meanwhile enjoying the show every day!
    • Lois and Gloria did the right thing I feel knowing it was Camila that raised Gio has BL feeling some jealousy No one is saying that Camila was a bad mother to Gio I believe it will be Gio saying that Camila was great to him, thanking Lois and Gloria to get BL to see truth
    • Its realistic for Dani and  true of how the character thinks and operates. We've known her long enough to by that this would be consistent with her past characterizatioin
    • Random takes: - What was even the point of that jeweler guy? Also—Dani was borderline harassing him. - I know I’m probably in the minority here, but I want Jacob and Kat to happen. I need something messy to completely dismantle the Duprees—and Katomas just isn’t cutting it.  - I officially can’t stand Jacob and his wife. Same goes for Anita and Vernon. - Hayley’s corset was just as ugly as it looked uncomfortable. - I genuinely don’t remember when or how Derek and Ashley reconciled—and I’m someone who didn’t even mind their storyline! LMAO. - Tuesday’s episode was a mess. - Dani finding out about Hayley’s pregnancy and immediately thinking, “She’s faking it”—huh?! What writer thought that was a realistic reaction? I get denial, but that leap was absurd. I agree the ‘Leslie Victorious’ moment was way OTT. But hey, at least I wasn’t yawning. The following episode, where she handed over her daughter’s last few belongings was much better. - I can’t with the constant back-and-forth between Orphey Gene’s and the Country Club. I forgot this was such a soap trope, but even back in my loyal viewer days (late ‘90s, early 2000s), it wasn’t this bad. While GH has a ton of beautiful sets, we’re stuck with the same three—and half of them are ugly. Also: it’s been way too long since we had a party, gala, or any kind of event. I know the Richardsons’ anniversary gala (back in late April) has had a big ripple effect, but I was kinda getting used to those large-scale episodes. Fingers crossed they don’t go with Guza.
    • The horrific comments execs and writers make when they justify rape storylines or keeping rapists as love interests is just so icky. I remember Ron Carlivati's comments about the reraping of Marty storyline on OLTL. Made my skin crawl.  No matter what you think of her, Susan Lucci could have demanded front burner storylines but she never did. She was happy to be part of an ensemble. I never got that vibe from Zimmer.  For me, Reva was just not a character I cared that much about after a certain point no matter how talented Zimmer is/was. I think Zimmer had a keener eye for what made a good storyline, but she was less willing to take a backseat if it meant someone else got to shine. I'm trying to recall if she ever mentions Michelle Forbes in her book--one of the few times the viewers did not care about Reva in a storyline. My sense is if she did, it was probably some backhanded remark about how she had to show Forbes the ropes.
