Days: October 2019 discussion 🎃

For all the drama going on. Today's show was rather low key and boring. WilSon was back looking bored and indifferent. Now Kristen & Jordan becoming friends might be interesting. Ben the serial killer grieving for his ''friend'' Stefan

It was nice to get a break from the Horton's. Who are completely indifferent towards Gabi. Gabi was never one of my favorites but she's grown on me. It's because CB always gives a 110%. While her other costars look bored and sleepy. These's episodes are rather meh. Not expecting the Time Jump episodes to be any better. So they skip a year. The writing will still be mediocre. They will still have the same old and overused couple of sets.

 It was to me.

I didn't know about it until I opened this thread.   *sigh*  Can we at least try to put things in spoiler tags if it hasn't happened on screen?  Even if it's common knowledge, can we try to remember that rule in the DTS threads? Please?  I guess it's pointless to go back and try to spoiler tag everything?

The writing of Julie, along with the ridiculous writing for Lani and Eli in this story has been egregious, and a prime example of exactly why you need non-white faces in your writing rooms. Julie has been written as a cartoon character shlubby suburbanite Trumpette under Ron, and it's offensive. Particularly when contrasting to Julie in the 80s-90s, who grew into a sophisticated club owner and businesswoman. Now, granted, what I saw of her mostly was her 1990-92 run, so I'm mostly going off that, but I adored her during that run, and what I've seen from before then is more or less in line with that. Julie today is absolutely NOTHING like the Julie I've been watching in any other era.

Yes, Julie could be written as racist, but in my eyes, it would be that subtle, microaggression-heavy bourgeois racism most would barely notice until you pointed it out, and even then you'd have a bit of a moment where you weren't really sure. Obviously, Ron doesn't deal in subtlety, so we get everything short of Julie in a MAGA cap.

Then having Eli and Lani have to tiptoe around her to spare her precious feelings when calling her out, then spending all their time handwringing over whether they were too mean to her when they barely ever addressed the problem in the first place? Nah, miss me with that. Ron has gotta stop trying to do racially conscious stories if he isn't gonna hire more PoC in the writing room. At the very least getting folks in there who better understand the nuances of what's going on in the world, or nuance in general.

Julie saying Chiquita all the time and the way she would poke at Gabi with

the pronunciation of Hernandez....really hit a nerve with me. I never said anything about it on here because no one really brought it up and I found Julie's behavior very offensive and racist.

It's rubbed me entirely the wrong way as well, but I tend to very rarely run my mouth here, I save it for Twitter, largely. But I have finally had it. I get that they wanted to have that moment where someone important to the audience would have that awkward conversation with their family etc. But Julie was way OTT and the entirely wrong character to take in this direction. It's stupid.

The Julie of the early 90's was completely different. 1990's Julie like beebs stated was a sophisticated bossiness woman. Julie was a strong mother figure to sweet girls like Faith and Molly. As well as bad girl Eve. The latter relationship has been completely forgotten. I really liked 90's Julie. Modern day Julie is an unpleasant old racist fart. It's a shame Julie was once the Days proto vixen.  The original bad girl that fellow vixens like Eve, Sami even Gabi strung from.

    • Valerie Mahaffey Dead: ‘Northern Exposure,’ ‘Dead to Me’ Actress Was 71 I just loved Valerie on my early '90s TV shows. This one gets me.
    • I assume they did at some point during the finale...
    • Kelly was a horribly-written character overall. Just think, two Emmy-winning actresses (including Cynthia Watros, Nina, GH, and Annie, GL) couldn't make it work. Pamela is campy, but so are Dani, Vanessa, Leslie, and Joey. And, I don't want to be too judgy because my love for camp changes depending on the show. OLTL, DAYS, and some eras of GH had me rolling with the camp. However, Passions was overkill and I hated it. And, here, I can take it or leave it. It's ok in small doses (note to RC). I see this show as more of a serious drama.
    • I think one of the reasons that pilot didn't get picked up was because Vicki L was associated more with being Thelma Harper and playing older then she was playing her own age.  It was a blessing it didn't get picked up, or we would have been deprived of the syndicated era of Mama's Family.   Also, worth noting a Pre Night Court Marsha Warfield and pre Perfect Strangers Rebecca Arthur in the cast.  All talented women, but stuck with a bad script. And the other pilot had a pre Fran Fine.. Fran Drescher as the best friend.  I think that pilot might have been picked up if Karen Valentine and Fran Drescher switched roles.
    • So, on rewatch....did Rick and Mindy never have sex?
    • Cady had a fairly posh accent or manner as Rosanna - the character was a 180 from Dixie when she went to ATWT, and it was a huge success initially. As someone mostly only familiar with the nagging, miserable or clueless Dixie of the mid-late '90s and early 2000s it was what convinced me Cady could act. I thought she was incredible in her first run. Later, in future stints, her hair and story and performances were all over the place but a lot of that was down to the show for me. She brought some of Rosanna back with her to Dixie in her ill-fated return and a lot of people didn't like it, which I understood but I did think the character needed some change. I think she's had a little bit of the same persona and arch performance in every role she's played since, including Jennifer Horton at DAYS or Kelly at Y&R, who later became a maniac and was easily the worst work I've ever seen Cady do. It has kind of infected her overall mannerisms, I'll allow that, but I do think she brought Dixie back together as herself while still evolving the character when she returned to AMC again in 2012-13. Nonetheless, for me the upshot is that this is a character where Cady's kookier recent performance style suits the role. But I can understand it grating for people.
    • Yeah, Loretta Swit's passing stings. My late dad LOVED the show (he died last November) and watched it religiously. In first run and repeats.  And I was literally born the day after the show's premiere, so I grew up with it! I know many loved later, softer Margaret, but I loved Early Hot Lips. In real life, I'm all for less misogyny, but to me, the early years of M*A*S*H were just funnier. May Loretta Swit rest in peace. Thanks for all the memories connected to my dad!

    • I agree that she isn't Dixie or Rosanna and shouldn't be acting like either. I just found it strange that she had a naive Southern character and a wealthy urbane character in the past and didn't experiment with accents before (unless I missed it, correct me if I'm wrong). She used to do improv characters on YouTube. She's probably doing something similar here.
