Hello, st3dm4m!  Welcome to SON!

Last time I checked, I was a male.

Favorite shows: GL, AMC, OLTL, ATWT, EON, DAYS.

I remember hearing Y&R always rated very strongly with men - many attributing their #1 status partly to male viewership. Whereas GH, despite its focus on male mobsters, didn't rate as well with men as it did with women. I'm more interested in these demographic analyses to be honest.

The ones I consider "my" soaps are: Days of Our Lives, One Life to Live, The Edge of Night, and Dark Shadows. I've ventured into watching most of the others at some point or another and always keep up with the remaining shows despite not watching any of them for years.

Y&R rates well with men for one reason and one reason only: The Great Victor Newman (TGVN).  He's a ruthless, self-made billionaire who is catnip to many women, even though he treats them like [!@#$%^&*].  Men love that.

But, I think Y&R's continued number-one status is probably due more to its' African-American (and other minorities) viewership, even though it's the same show that had the nerve to saddle Black characters with names like "Kong" and "Mamie."  (But, everyone on the show is rich and fabulous, so why not?)

As for GH, I think the fact that it airs at 3 pm in most parts of the country, when people are still at work, might have something to do with why it doesn't do as well among males.  Y&R (and AMC), OTOH, air(ed) during most people's work/lunch breaks.

Aside from DAYS, I would say those are the soaps that males tend to watch most.  ESPECIALLY EON and DS (and I would add AMC to the list).  I mean, I've never heard as many men say they were fans of ATWT, for example, or GL.

Male here as well. Y&R was always my #1 show. I did watch Days and B&B as well, I know of all the shows and have taken an interest in certain periods of those shows, but Y&R was the only one I watched consistently from the 80's to early 00's

Yeah AMC for sure had strong male viewership. There was a documentary about it from around 79/80, I think they even interviewed some basketball players, who would take a break in training to watch the show.

When I was growing up, I knew several boys in our neighborhood who watched soaps, primarily The Edge of Night, which aired after school hours and was more of crime melodrama than other serials. Later, when Dark Shadows debuted, many boys watched that as well.

There used to be a stigma against watching soaps, however, particularly for males of any age. Penised persons (LOL) were often derided for being "sissies" if anyone caught them enjoying daytime dramas. So they kept their soap opera viewing in the closet. Ridiculous, I know, but I distinctly remember a very nasty neighbor of ours shouting at his daughter while a group of us kids were playing outside. He told her to to stay away from one of the little boys playing with us because the child did not like sports at all, but watched soaps with his grandmother, and was therefore (supposedly) "going to end up a f*ggot and a queer!" He was a vile, vile man, attacking and humiliating an 8-year-old gratuitously. Ironically, this pig was so unpleasant that other parents on the street didn't want the rest of us playing with HIS daughter, just because of HIM.

But I digress.

Men and boys have always watched soaps, and I recall reading an article about this back in the 1970s, when the networks guesstimated that up to a quarter or a even third of certain soaps' audience were male. The Edge of Night and All My Children were mentioned as having a large male following.

I hear you. I cannot stand watching any of the remaining soaps in their current, abysmal condition, but for some unfathomable reason, I continue to keep up with them all, anyway.

Certainly, as I've said before, the fact that AMC aired during the lunchtime period helped the show become popular among non-traditional audiences, such as men and college students.  But, I think another factor that played into that was its' reliance on humor and comedy, which made AMC, along with OLTL, seem more contemporary and "adult" than a lot of other shows.

Personally, I would rather see the remaining four soaps cancelled outright than watch them stagger to their impending deaths any longer, although I do realize that the two or three people (LOL) still watching may want to cling to the shows for as long as they can, for nostalgia's sake if nothing else.

    • Liam hasn't had a purpose in years, none of the Spencer's have. The Spencer family should be written off and let Finn adopt Kelly, he's more her dad anyways.  IMO I think SC seen the writing on the wall with Liam. Brad is never going to let the character grow or evolve. Even dying he's being wishy washy and a waffler lol. Scott out there asking for Liam to be a villain and paired with Ivy only for Liam to continue to waffle I'd rather see Scott back at GH as Dillon or Michael Quartermaine   But I dunno I read Scott has issues with Frank that stem from his time on One Life to Live Also all the Lope flashbacks where when Liam was married to Steffy and one of them was when Hope was telling Liam she was pregnant(he was married to Steffy then) lol
    • Thanks! I never venture back to re-watch that period of the show
    • I was wondering about Liam wearing that hat for such a long time, as it was supposed to be covering up his surgery wound -- but he wouldn't need a hat for this long a period of time. Then I noticed everyone's wardrobe is the same, too, and realized that it's been the same "Forrester/Logan day" for two weeks of episodes. I guess he just got out of the hospital and all these episodes are discussing what happened?
    • I would have to say FD was the luckiest man in daytime who stayed way past any reason for him to be there, but yes, totally agree that Alan should have died at that point, which would have spared us more years on mustache twirling bombasity.   I know it was a big get to bring Joan Collins on, and I loved her Alex, but it would have been great at that point if they had just brought Amanda back. Phillip is named by Alan and Alex as the successor or head of family and head of the corporation, with the board and investors approval. Amanda (who is back to being Alan's daughter, it was one last "screw you" from Brandon to try to get Alan and Alex at each others throats) gets pissed and comes back to stake her claim and be a thorn in everyone's side. Meanwhile Liv is suddenly REALLY interested in Phillip as he will have a longer self life then Alan. Things unfold much as they did with Amanda coming back to thwart Liv as Alex did..and when the truth comes out Alan really does have a heart attack and kicks (for real, for good, no fake outs, no returns, he's dead..dead.) and then AM comes back (as Taggert originally planned before Weston came to stink up the place.) to make his claim also. Phillip' guilt over Alan's death and having no final reconciliation ( On his death bed Alan could say, "I am proud of you son, you have finally become a real Spaulding," right before he kicks. ) I also agree that Phillip was not always likable, which really I give GA credit for being brave enough to make him that way, which is exactly how Phillip should be.   Ed and Chelle were there, but she ran off the plane to chase J...(I kid you not, that is why we started calling her Slutchelle) and Ed ran after her. The reason they, and no one else was at the wedding was obviously to save money, so it would have made more sense to have it on an existing set then that dumb Universal Studios thing.
    • They probably threw in Rick because he's AM's cousin, Michelle should've been there too. I don't remember if Ed was still on the show at this point
    • In the 2nd semi-final, I enjoyed Denmark and Luxembourg (plus France) the most. I was also positively surprised by Germany's performance, because usually our performances are ... well, lackluster, to put it nicely. The one country I did not expect to qualify was Armenia, but yeah, the staging probably helped a lot, because the song itself is just noise in my ears. I thought Serbia would make it instead. None of the Ex-Yugo countries made it to the Grand Final (first time since 2013), while all the Nordics and Baltics qualified. Recap of the 2nd semi-final:

    • I don't think they were prepared for Sherry Mathis to exit. I think the scripts were written well in advance and they didn't expect her to go. Louanne was on the very next episode and a terrible recast.  Erwin Nicholson made the same mistake in casting with Nicole on Edge but they gave the character some weeks or months rest before they brought in Jayne Bentzen, I believe.  As I stated above, in rewatching these posted episodes, I am making a guess that Mayer/Braxton wrote many weeks in advance because of the Spring 85 writers' strike.  While the strike lasted only two weeks, SFT is the only P&G soap that had writer credits through the two weeks of air shows that included the strike weeks. I also am guessing that Mayer was signed to a six month minimum (soaps typically have actors and writers on 13 week contracts) and Mayer was fired exactly at 26 weeks from the day his material first started airing.  He was a disaster for the show and Erwin was tired and not what the show needed although scoring Lambie as Lloyd was his top achievement (he lasted a little less than 1 year).
