The Media/Journalism Thread

I finally cancelled my subscription. I'll have to do without except I did keep my subscription to the crosswords. Amidst all of this with that paper I thought there was still some decent journalism going on and I still do. But not because of the leadership, despite it. The fact Bennett after everything is still seen favorably after his atrocious management of the opinion section, is frankly inexcusable. Sulzberger thinking he's still leadership material tells me this paper isn't going to change or get better. I am all for reading a diversity of opinions in the opinion section, but the editorial staff makes the decision on the content they publish. They get hundreds of submissions a week and they go out of their way to invite this garbage from Cotton. The only good thing this did is probably ended any aspirations he has. But putting the actual content aside, the op-ed was poorly written. Who edited the piece?

Anyone who thinks Bari Weiss has anything of value to contribute has their head in their you know what. Her own history of blocking, reporting, and attempting to get people fired whose views do not align with hers is the utmost hypocrisy of this entire cancel culture garbage. The fact she can go on social media and blatantly lie about the response to the editorial should get her canned. But it won't. Stephens is a worm and tried to get a professor fired for calling him a bedbug on social media - hardly any kind of slur, at least none I am aware of. He's fragile and a poor writer.

They need a diversity of opinions I concur but choosing people who lie and believe in conspiracies and push fascism ain't it. I frankly still can't believe they published something from a guy who promoted using military violence on American citizens. As if this is an opinion worthy of appearing there. That tells me all I need to know.

Agree.  I think what appalled me (and still appalls me) is that Bennet and/or his staff sought out Tom Cotton to write that disgusting editorial, rather than the other way around.  Learning about that tidbit changed my view on how editorial pages are run entirely.

IDK about all that; you probably make an excellent point.  I just think you shouldn't go out of your way as an editorial page editor to solicit opinions that you KNOW are inflammatory and dangerous.  It's one thing if Cotton had submitted the piece and Bennet had chosen to print it.  But, to ask for something you have to know has the potential to harm more than help?  It's like the journalism equivalent of asking Megan McTavish to pen a story about a lesbian getting pregnant as a result of rape.  (Oh, wait.)

She's the epitome of failing upwards. Last week she was whining about her neighborhood in New York being a "war zone" (or something like that). A neighbor pointed out that it was not, and she hasn't even been there in months. This then led to her whining because she said people were trying to find out where she and her ugly bootlicking husband are living.

    • Ah okay, thats what I thought. I was hoping I missed the announcement somewhere. Thanks for the clarification.
    • A new day in Salem… and a new day for Days.  I like the way everybody found out and absorbed the news about John’s death, and how they all eventually found their way to Marlena’s to offer their condolences. I’m not particularly sure why they waited until the next day to tell everybody but I don’t really mind it.  We finally got Roman’s perspective! His scenes with Kayla were one of the best parts of today. I’m glad that Roman is thankful for everything that John did for his kids. I agree with posters who said that he should’ve had a scene like this with John, but I’m happy we got this at least.  Julie was used very well today too. She’s definitely the best person for Marlena to have scenes with at the moment. Hopefully, Julie continues to be there for her. And yes, I totally agree with Marlena and Belle sending EJ away when he came to the apartment. I’m curious to see what’s going to happen to his and Belle’s relationship in the aftermath of all this. And, while I enjoyed most of Brady and Kristen’s scenes, I still think the ship has sailed for them. Hopefully, the aftermath of John’s death causes Brady to finally end this thing with her once and for all.  And, I see a lot of people were wearing some kind of shade of purple today.

    • Wow, I love that current and former actors are participating in this. I barely recognize Staci Greason! She looks fine, just very different. But I will be happy to hear anecdotes from her. I shipped RoJohn and Isabella hard back in the day, and I sobbed buckets in my dorm room at college when Izzy B passed. Honestly, I'm interested in everyone's stories. Drake seemed like he was well loved among the cast.
    • When she first appeared, I was sure she was setting Tyrell up for a prank. She was too much of a manic pixie dream girl- I wasn't surprised Tyrell also became suspicious. Now I'm not so sure. If Jessica genuinely likes Tyrell, it seems like a missed opportunity to not have started her out as a bully, then we see her gradually catch feelings for Tyrell.  The McBrides are definitely the "C" family of BTG. They always get last priority. There have been a few times where the Doug/Vanessa/Joey characters reference off screen conversations which seem too important to not show us. Like when Doug thanked Joey for giving him extra time to pay off the loan. When did that happen? Or when we abruptly moved from Vanessa/Joey at Uptown to Vanessa/Doug in the hotel room. The McBrides don't even have their own set - even though Vanessa is a realtor. It's a shame because I am a fan of the characters and actors.

I am also adjusting to KR as Ted but I feel that AM and MJ had way more chemistry as father and daughter than AM and KR. We saw Eva dream of having a real relationship with MJ's version of Ted for months so it's a bit of a bummer not to have that payoff with the original actor except for those scenes in MJ's last episode.  Something I noticed about Eva today is how she takes genuine delight in being a schemer. As badly as she wants to be a Richardson, she still has so much of her mom in her. It was jarring seeing her earnestly promise to steer clear of Leslie in her scene with Ted, then immediately switch attitudes when her mom showed up.  I'm very surprised with how quickly the accident story has been moving along. I was sure that it would be months if not years before people figured out it was Leslie on the motorcycle, not to mention responsible for the potassium overdose. I'm looking forward to seeing how MVJ and Guza avoid writing Leslie into a corner.  Finally, I have been loving the Articulettes story. Bonita Brisker was just the right amount of OTT - remember Sharon is supposed to be even more angry than Tracy is. If Sharon didn't come in swinging, people would say she fell flat. The way Sharon and Tracy describe the breakup is so Supremes-meet-Original Recipe Destiny's Child. I get the sense that MVJ is re-writing the Return to Love Tour as a roman a clef, and I love it. I'm looking forward to finding out what the secret they share is. If Dante Green is as shady as Berry Gordy was, it's something dark. If/when they go through with the reunion, I expect Dante to show up and claim to own the Articulettes trademark in a Lou Pearlman-esque twist.
    • Other than hanging out with Liz, all of Lucky's stories have been stalled out or dropped; the relationship with his son; his wanderlust. He hasn't been involved in any of the action/adventure or con artist stuff. I don't think he's even had a scene with Sidwell since the latter came to town. He's a real after thought. I doubt he's long for the show.
