Gladys was one of many black women Aretha has unnecessarily shaded in the past, so glad to see her being classy and remembering good times.

This article recounts Aretha's issues with other female artists:

This is a very cool interview with Aretha’s producer in the ‘80s, the famous Narada Michael Walden. The story of Aretha staring him down “like Muhammad Ali or Joe Frazier” is a hoot.

Plus a status update on the biopic with JHud:

It's mentioned in the Variety article above (and it was Aretha holding it up, possibly just for more money) but I pray that this concert documentary can finally be released:

I saw a bit of Ariana Grande's much-hyped tribute on the Tonight Show and it sounded like more of the overwrought, empty oversinging she always does. No soul.

I have HEARD how terrible Madonna's tribute was, but I won't be watching it.

Madonna wasn't even there to give a tribute, she was there to present Video of the Year, she and MTV just tacked on a long ass speech that referenced Aretha and an in memoriam graphic/tag. It was oddly produced and slapped together and I wonder why they even tried - they shouldn't have bothered.

MTV is also not the proper venue to pay tribute to Aretha, not like she was ever much of a video artist nor does MTV even care about music to begin with.

MTV does this by design.  Madonna did the exact same thing with her "tribute" to Prince.  This was no accident.

There is a generation of Black people who grew up in the 1980s who remember seeing Aretha singing in music videos.

Songs like

"Freeway of Love" (which got a LOT of play on BET, Video Music Box, Friday Night Videos)

"Who's Zooming Who?"

"Jump To It" (which, I admit was far more popular on the radio than video)

"Jumping Jack Flash" where Whoopi Goldberg made a very memorable cameo

"The Sisters Are Doing It (For Themselves)" with Annie Lennox

"(I) Knew You Were Waiting For Me" with George Michael.

Just because MTV didn't acknowledge or play most of these videos doesn't mean they didn't exist. Nor does it diminish their importance.

MTV was the same network that tried to keep Michael Jackson's videos and only started playing his videos under duress.  Soon after they practically tied their network to Jackson once they saw how many were flocking his music.

I do agree that MTV is not the proper venue to pay tribute to Aretha.  Madonna is not the right artist to do so either.

    • I suspected that the performance with the reveal was the reason why the Ted actor got the axe and it looks like I was right. He wasn't really good at conveying what needed to be conveyed in those scenes. Claybon is at least slowly improving (but I agree that he still needs to work on his line delivery), but I do wonder what will happen when his big reveal is coming up.
    • I've already asked this before, recently, but can anyone who watched those years more closely tell me if anything said about Jessie and Simon at the end of their profiles is accurate (about them marrying, naming a baby after Brandon/Lujack, etc.)?
    • Nicole is way too smart to not know she was carrying twins - she's a doctor! My guess is that Leslie did abort her baby out of fear, and as payback, stole Ted and Nicole's child (Eva), and stole Kat from another family to replace her in the hospital.
    • Those Soap Central profiles have a lot of incorrect info. According to SOD summaries and the Daytime Newsletter of the time,Tim left town for a new job and Pam reunited with the father of her baby and also departed Springfield. They did not marry.
    • Do we believe that Jabot is at the level of Estee Lauder?? I am on board with Jabot deciding to expand but the way it was handled was ridiculous. Jabot just decided and bingo, that was that. Not months of negotiations and decisions about how it would fit into the Jabot portfolio. And then no follow through. Josh thinks he's serving business stories by characters sitting around and discussing mergers, takeovers and job switching. Now we have Audra setting up her own company -Vibrator or something. Well, why not? You don't need staff, office space or even products.
    • He a dirty dog! Those are his kids and he hurt everyone. At this point he needed to just come clean. I can't believe I was lusting over this man! I hope they aren't quick to forgive.
    • The way I took it is that he did not want to confirm or deny anything until he talked to Nicole first. He was very calculated with the wording he used with Martin and Kat
    • I still see Alfonso Ribeiro as Carlton when Martin gets angry.
    • Not that I want to defend Y&R's writers, but it's not as absurd as you'd think and I believe they plucked it from reality (and then bungled it). The Estee Lauder Companies purchased Tom Ford's brand several years ago and I am willing to bet that's how Jabot came to buy Marchetti.
    • Loved the episode today. looking forward to the fallout. Nubian-Sheila looked fantastic, but I wish the writers would cut back on her overuse of figurative language. I loved the "fix yo mind ministries" line though. The background music during her fantasy confrontation with Nicole was epic.
