From the Miami Community News

M*A*S*H’s ‘Lieutenant Dish’ Jo Ann Pflug a UM alum

By
 Bob Goldstein

March 4, 2019

When M*A*S*H appeared on movie and television screens more than 40 years ago it was much more than a passing fancy. The 1970 movie was a breakthrough film, which featured a number of new actors. Nominated for five Academy Awards and the Oscar winner for Best Screenplay, it was followed two years later by a mega hit television program which stayed on the air for an amazing 11 years.

A good share of the credit should go the University of Miami and its excellent film and scenic design departments, which was chaired by the redoubtable Ken Kurtz. Professor Kurtz, who also directed the lighting and scenic design for many productions at the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre, taught classes for 43 years at UM and among his acting prodigies are Sylvester Stallone, Ray Liotta, Stephen Bauer (Que Pasa USA), Sandra Santiago and Bob Clark, who directed the classic holiday film Christmas Story.

Other alums who had different majors but made their mark in Hollywood include Dwayne Johnson, Charles Grodin and Jo Ann Pflug, the Lieutenant Dish of M*A*S*H.

Ms. Pflug is from Winter Park, Fl, where her father once served as Mayor. She graduated with a degree BA in history and a minor in broadcasting. M*A*S*H was only her second film. She was so good as the sexy nurse Maria Schneider, Hollywood was forever trying to cast her in alluring roles which called for nudity. Pfulg, who is a born again Christian, declined these parts and eventually carved out a long career in television films and game shows.

But it was M*A*S*H which put Jo Ann Pflug on the map. She is seen early in the film and quickly dubbed Lt. Dish by the sassy medical doctors played by Donald Sutherland (Hawkeye) and Tom Skerritt. “I think I’m in love ,” says the Skerritt character Dr. Duke Forrest as he first lays eyes on the comely nurse. Lt. Dish is married and she quickly flashes her wedding ring at the camp’s newly arrived doctors.

The film was a forerunner of TV and film satire which began in the 70’s. The Robert Altman production and the television show laid waste to the American military, religion and marriage. Though Pflug and Sutherland are married to others, they start an affair in the movie version and Hawkeye even convinces our Lt. Dish to sleep with another officer who was having – shall we say – performance issues. When Ms. Plug was a UM student, friends have told me she was carrying on a hot romance with the Canes football coach.

Everything seemed to be wide open after M*A*S*H jolted audiences with its form of black comedy. The TV show which starred Alan Alda as Hawkeye, Michael Moore and Harry Morgan more or less followed the same format at the successful big screen version. The final show in 1973 drew 105.9 million viewers, the largest audience ever to see a television show in the United States up to that point.

If it wasn’t for the popularity of the original 1970 movie, I doubt if we would have had TV shows like Saturday Night Live or Seinfeld or comedians like Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, Billy Crystal or Chris Rock.

Thanks, Hawkeye.

Paul Burke, New Orleans-born actor, dies

Paul Burke, the New Orleans-born actor best known for his roles in the "Naked City," "12 O'Clock High" and "Dynasty" television series, died early Sunday in Palm Springs, Calif. He was 83.

Mr. Burke was born in 1926, the son of boxer Martin Burke. The family owned the nightclub and restaurant Marty Burke's in the French Quarter during World War II, and Mr. Burke spent much of his childhood around the family business.

He made his way to Hollywood at the age of 19, where he studied acting at the Pasadena Playhouse school of theatre arts.

At first, Mr. Burke was cast in small roles in films and became protege to Warner Bros. director Lloyd Bacon. He travelled back and forth between Hollywood and New York, playing guest roles in television series. In 1957, Mr. Burke landed his first leading role as Dr. Noah McCann in NBC's live television series "Noah's Ark."

He also did numerous guest roles in TV series and starred in several other series including ABC's "Harbourmaster" and NBC's "Five Fingers."

Mr. Burke was nominated for an Emmy twice for his role as Det. Adam Flint in the Emmy Award winning series "Naked City," which he joined in its second season when the format changed from half-hour to hour long drama. With storylines inspired by real life crime and its gritty, semi-documentary shooting style on location in New York City, the series attracted the brightest up and coming talents of the New York stage to guest roles -- Dustin Hoffman, Robert Duvall, Jon Voight among them.

Mr. Burke later went on to a starring role in ABC's popular series, "12 O'Clock High" as Col. Joseph Anson Gallagher.

Throughout his career he was a staple in television series, utilized most frequently by friend and colleague Aaron Spelling. In the 1980s Mr. Burke found himself in one of the most widely watched series of the time, "Dynasty," as the infamous Congressman Neal McVane who framed Alexis for murder.

small_paul-burke2.jpgPaul Burke in "Valley of the Dolls" role

Though Mr. Burke spent much of his career in television, he also had success in feature films. In 1967 the best-selling Jacqueline Susann novel "Valley of the Dolls" was made into a movie and Mr. Burke was cast as Lyon Burke, starring alongside Sharon Tate, Patty Duke and Barbara Parkins.

His other roles in film include leading roles in "The Thomas Crown Affair" with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway, and "Daddy's Gone A-Hunting."

In 1979 Burke married television actress Lyn Peters whom he'd worked with on "12 O'Clock High." In the past several years the couple had retired permanently to their Palm Springs home.

In 1989, Mr. Burke was indicted with then-New Orleans District Attorney Harry Connick, developer Wilson Abraham, attorney Pat Fanning and a convicted bookmaker, Walton Aucoin. They were accused on charges of racketeering and aiding a gambling operation.

The highly publicized five-week trial brought Burke back to his native city to face federal charges that he was aiding an illegal gambling operation by calling Connick, a lifelong friend, on behalf of Aucoin. Burke, Connick, Abraham and Fanning were acquitted in 1990, but Aucoin and two-others were convicted.

Burke is survived by his wife, Lyn, and his three children from his first marriage, Paula Burke-Lopez, Paul Brian Burke and Dina Burke-Shawkat.

Re Paul Burke - Della and Royal Bay are the same project. When Royal Bay was rejected as a TV pilot, it was repackaged and renamed for some sort of theatrical release/syndication deal. I've also seen it as a VCR release under another name.

And I had no idea that Ali Shawkat was his grandaughter.

Also,Barbara Rush's 57 No Down Payment has been cited as the inspiration for Knots Landing. PS It's a good movie if you haven't seen it -very soapy!

Gwynn Gillis

Guiding Light Molly Randall

Guiding Light Blair Van Houten

Gwynn Gillis lists these roles in her book 'The ABC of Soaps'

Her character descriptions

Blair was a clothes horse, always pursuing the best designer
with the most elegant gowns. She’d lunch with her friends at posh
restaurants and try to stay on a her strict diet, to no avail. She
always had to buy new clothes because “nothing fit.” She briefly
appeared to help Mindy’s design career by commissioning her to
create a party dress in a day. Due to a snowstorm, Mindy lost her
car keys and never delivered the dress. Mrs. Van Houten never
forgave her for leaving her hanging with the dreaded reality that
she had to wear “last year’s dress,” which obviously didn’t fit,
wrecking her evening. Blair had a sense of humor, but only about
her diet, not her clothes.

Molly was a ruthless district attorney running for re-election
during a highly publicized murder trial in Springfield. Rather than
carefully prosecute a visible case with indisputable evidence, Molly
rushed in to arrest unlikely suspects, including Laura, who was
pregnant, just to capitalize on the publicity and guarantee her
re-election. When the evidence couldn't withstand court scrutiny,
she blamed several high-ranking police detectives and the police
commissioner. Molly was re-elected, though the lives of all those
arrested were destroyed—Laura lost her child and her marriage;
she was given a prison sentence, along with several others.

Blair I can see as a short term role but Molly is a mystery.Who was Laura? Perhaps Gwynn misremembered  the characters actual name?

Can any GL fans help out?

Honoring Charles Durning, Character Actor and WWII Hero

Aug 7, 2023

From MEDIUM

Charles Durning’s D-Day memories were so painful that for decades he suppressed them. Drafted at age 20, Durning eventually earned a Silver Star for valor, a Bronze Star for meritorious service in a combat zone, and three Purple Hearts, given in the president’s name to those wounded or killed in military service. Just out of high school, which he didn’t complete until the war ended, Durning was the only survivor in a unit that landed on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944.

Durning’s World War II experiences are unfathomable, and his actions in defense of his fellow soldiers, selfless and heroic. During the Normandy battle, Durning killed seven German gunners, but suffered serious machine gun wounds to his right leg and shrapnel wounds throughout his body.

After a six-month recovery in England, Durning was rushed back to the front lines to fight against the German Ardennes offensive. During the Battle of the Bulge, Durning suffered more wounds, this time in hand-to-hand bayonet combat when he was stabbed eight times. Despite the vicious assault, Durning summoned up the strength to kill his attacker with a rock which earned him a second Purple Heart. Soon after, his company was captured and forced to march through the Malmedy Forest; in the ensuing “Malmedy massacre,” German troops opened fire on the prisoners, and Durning was among the few who escaped.

Durning would earn his third Purple Heart when, in March 1945, he moved into Germany with the 398th Infantry Regiment, where he was severely wounded when a bullet struck him in the chest. Private First Class Durning was evacuated to the U.S. to spend the remainder of his active Army career recovering until he was discharged in January 1946.

Born in 1923, Durning grew up in Highland Falls, N.Y., near the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. His father, James, an Irish immigrant who had joined the Army to gain U.S. citizenship, lost a leg during World War I and died when Charles was 12. James’ widow Louise supported her five children by working as a laundress at West Point. Four other children died from scarlet fever.

After the war, Durning used dance as physical therapy to strengthen his badly injured leg and speech therapy to smooth out a stutter that had developed. He began training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, but was told he lacked talent. Undeterred, he took small roles with Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Company and taught ballroom dancing at the Fred Astaire studio.

Eventually, Durning achieved his lifelong goal when he landed parts in television and the movies. His most memorable silver screen appearances among his 200 films include The Sting, 1973; Dog Day Afternoon, 1975, and Tootsie, 1982. His significant honors include numerous Academy, Emmy and Tony Award nominations.

Reluctant to visit the site where so many of his comrades lay, Durning returned to Normandy only once after the war ended. Looking back during a 1994 Memorial Day service to recognize the invasion’s 50th anniversary, Durning noted remorsefully that the U.S. had engaged in at least five wars since World War II — Korea, Desert Storm, Panama, Grenada and Vietnam. He said that each war is pertinent to only the individual who was there.

“I don’t know what they went through; they don’t know what I went through,” said Durning. “Each person fights his own war. Each person is on a one-to-one basis with whoever’s opposite him.” Durning added: “That war changed history as we knew it. It was the greatest armada that ever hit any country, anywhere, anytime in the history of mankind. No one will ever see anything that enormous again.” World War II was, Durning said, the last war that had a well-defined purpose.

In January 2008, Durning was honored with the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award, and his star was placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame adjacent to the actor he most admired, Jimmy Cagney. Durning died of natural causes at his Manhattan home on Christmas Eve December 24, 2012, aged 89. Two days later, Broadway theaters dimmed their lights in his honor. Durning is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, the ultimate tribute to an American hero.

Star-Kidz update: new interviews with child actors from December 2023 and January 2024.
Soap child actors (and a few other child actors).
In some cases you will recognize surnames but not the first name, because they interview some siblings of soap actors, who act in other projects.  For example: Viron Weaver (Wiley Corinthos) has siblings Venice Weaver, Vienna Weaver, and Vale Weaver, who all act.

The interviews are at this link:
https://star-kidz.net/category/site/qa/
(On their site, click Q&A)

Jan. 9, 2024: Star-Kidz video of these child actors and what they've been doing during 2023.  Several actors portraying Amelia Corinthos, LOL.  All the Charlotte Cassadines, etc.    There are some children shown as being on GH, but they don't have roles.  From the interviews on the star-kidz.net website, I think some of them were extras at the Halloween 2023 children's party at Kelly's (now Bobbie's).  Galen Gering's son is on this video, too.
