(Philip had done some crazy things, clearly due to mental health issues (and possibly influenced by the Devil) and he would have been arrested, so Kate and Victor arranged for Philip to secretly get mental health therapy out of town; and meanwhile Kate and Victor are maintaining a ruse that Philip was kidnapped by an unknown person, probably Kristen. There's a lot more to it than that, but this is enough to answer the question.) Philip seems to be gone for good, but JKJ is still listed as contract, so I guess he'll return.
