Warner Archives overseer Daphne Dentz, the senior vice president of emerging formats, mastering, and content, explained their current process. “We are preserving our entire library,” she said. “It doesn’t matter what movie or television show, we will have a digital copy of that within the next many years. Nothing will ever be lost once it becomes digital. I think that we are in a moment in time where we want to restore everything in the library, and every title may not get a full 4k restoration, but it will definitely get a new HD master. And then as soon as that’s available, it’s gonna be in the marketplace.”

I have never watched more than a few minutes of Dallas at a time - I only became really cognizant of serialized TV right as it was ending - but I'm digging into the several necessary episodes as a precursor to Knots Landing, and wow, Linda Gray is a force. You always hear that Sue Ellen was the weeping drunk opposite J.R. but it's not always so early on, at least. Models Inc. really did not have her measure.

I think I'll give this a whirl from the start now that I've enmeshed myself in Knots Landing (which I love so far). The Gary/Val episodes of Dallas I watched to prep for Knots were very enjoyable, and it seems like a frothier, at times lighter watch to offset KL. Like many people I've seen bits and pieces of Dallas over the years, but never got into it all the way. I've burrowed through the thread plenty, but if anyone has any other thoughts on the first couple seasons they care to share go nuts.

Thanks for posting this - I never saw it! And how nice to see Victoria Principal participating. I think her comments are spot on - she discussed how Pam became more secondary in her last year of the show and why she felt they shouldn’t have been surprised that she left.

The first few seasons have many strong moments and are much  more heartfelt than what you will get later on. I will say a lot depends on how much you can take of Larry Hagman/JR - I was not a huge fan, which is why I've never been as into the show.

I once read Dallas described as a larger than life modern day Western. Maybe that was why Dallas was the more male-focused of the CBS big three and appealed more to the male audience than the others.

I've felt this for years since seeing her infamous SNL episode and bits of pieces of Dallas throughout my life, but upon seeing multiple full episodes it's official: I have an extremely low tolerance for Charlene Tilton.

You don't need to spoiler anything for me, lol. The show's been off the air over 30 years. If I want to avoid something I can handle it. I'm probably only going to check out a few seasons anyway - it's fluff to me vs. Knots Landing, which is already quite addictive.

It is painful to see VP/Pam so strong early on when even I know she got mired in a lot of sadsack wife stories later. And did she ever get a major TV role again (or want one)? I wonder if the showrunners at each show have ever reflected on the masculine or feminine driving energies of Dallas vs. KL.

@Vee You’re right, it does have a western feel to it. The earlier years are the best, and take a lot from the movies “Giant & Cat on a hot tin roof.” Pam is the star, of the miniseries, and I wish, it had stayed that way. I like JR, but after having all roads lead to him for so long it gets too repetitive! 
 

Lucy/Charlene best storyline is her romance with Mickey. I believe the show could have benefited from having Gary around longer, and it probably would’ve changed some things about the show!

Miss Ellie and Sue Ellen are Queens, my main reason for watching as long as I did!

I’m curious to see your feedback on Cliff, one of my favorites, but is like a caged bird imo. They never allowed him to upstaged JR. Anytime you though he did, you were wrong and I hated it.

 

Unpopular Opinion: After the infamous “Who shot Jr?” Cliffhanger and reveal, I think the show quickly falls into a funk. It’s not one of my favorite seasons, and doesn’t have too much replay value to me.

    • I think of Evan as a smarmy bast*rd. Maybe you'll like that description. You certainly have him pegged correctly since he is just a soldier following "Admiral" Iris's marching orders.  
    • So far the only interest I've seen from Evan to Amanda has been listening to Iris's orders to go and seduce her.  So far he hasn't been successful... but who knows. Amanda is unbearable at times. Entitled, spoiled... idiotic. Iris... so blatantly manipulating her and Amanda takes the bait. But I guess... when she gets in trouble... she'll have a chance to learn. That's what makes these shows so interesting.    Oh, no, don't worry. You haven't ruined a thing. Evan has not been on my radar that much... he was not one of the characters I was caring particularly... so nothing much has been changed for me. I don't think he has the stuff to ruin Rachel's life. He's just a pretty guy that can follow orders. Iris on the other hand... is dangerous.

    • The show has gone back to 10/10 entertainment! I'm glad that I was right in feeling that what were experiencing were growing pains. I'm sure they are not over yet, but I'll know that we always comeback to quality drama. I think it's going to be a hell of ride (in a good way) from this moment on. BTG has that magic that not a lot of shows have. I'll update more... when I'm done catching up.
    • So very glad to hear this. Yesterday I suddenly thought; OMG, what about spoilers, have I just  ruined things for Maxim in getting carried away with interest in Evan, who was so well-written & well-acted. BTW, your fan review of this episode was a sight for eyes that had not seen one of these for a little bit too long, LOL!!!  Mitch is also fascinating to me but in his case it's because he was all in with Janice & her nefarious plan & then he did this turnabout we've mentioned & he basically got off scot-free.
    • It does seem cheap and lazy for this show to have just one family. Passions was heavily criticized but it was nicely structured with a total of four families.      
    • I think it was definitely a surprising reveal in the storyline. I had a hard time appreciating Evan because I couldn't get behind his interest in Amanda. But that's because I never thought Sandra Ferguson made her a compelling character (although to give her credit she occasionally had decent emotional scenes with Mac or Rachel).
    • I'll even go further... I'll make her re-think BeLief and create a new patent. Brooke needs stuff to do. Anything other than beg or be in her panties. We need her to be creative. But sadly Bradley has a very low opinion of these characters. To him Brooke is nothing more than sex and scandal... or a pathetic doormat. Ridge is nothing more than a chauvinist pig that needs to pit women against each other to feel like A MAN and Steffy is nothing more than her father's guard-dog. I don't even want to open my mouth about Hope. She is such a fiasco in my opinion... I will not suffer if they kill her off. Bradley pooped on her character and now it's too late to fix it. Annika is great and I would hate to see her go, but slutty Hope was not her thing. The vibe was missing.     
    • I've seen Jason interact with Mitch and annoy him. That's as far as I recall. I didn't even have a slight idea that Evan had a vendetta against Rachel... That came as a surprise to me. I thought Evan was Iris's dog and that's it. Now he's definitely more interesting.
    • Thanks for these. I can't recall -- did Evan's vendetta have any position on Mitch, or was it all about Rachel? @Maxim have you seen any Frames intreracting with Mitch in any way?
