I've been making my way through the 1981-82 season, and Donna promoting her book cracked me up.

The cover of Sam Culver: The Political Years looks so cheap, like it was a self-publication job. I guess they weren't going to pay for John McIntire's likeness.

I initially thought How to Save a Fortune was an inside joke, and if I zoomed in, I'd see it was "written" by Leonard Katzman. Nope, it's an actual book, by Barry Kaye.

Geesh, you'd think they would have done this at a nicer venue than the local bargain store.

I've made it up to "Where There's a Will..." Miss Ellie's latest round of undermining Sue Ellen as a mother and/or independent woman (by cajoling her for the umpteenth time to let John Ross stay at Southfork) makes me wish someone dared to call the old bird out for accepting Lucy being stolen from Val. To the best of my knowledge, Ellie never paid for that one (and no, buying Gary & Val a house doesn't count).

Miss Ellie is always in denial. She berates JR several times during the series for his dirty business dealings, but where did he learn that from? Jock. And Ellie had no problem accepting the money from those dealings when it saved Southfork.

And the whole Lucy thing drives me nuts. Ellie was complicit in denying Lucy’s mother the opportunity to raise her or even see her. And later on, she was almost helped JR kidnap John Ross. So stop acting so holier-than-thou, you hypocritical old bag.

I’ve always cherished that early kitchen scene where Miss Ellie channels Lady Macbeth with Sue Ellen. She insists Sue Ellen needs to get pregnant fast—Pam’s younger, supposedly more fertile, and Jock would favor the first grandson. Right after, Sue Ellen bolts to seduce JR.   We don't get to see that side of Ellie often, until she scoots over to see Carter McKay in her VW Rabbit Convertible. (still amazed that they didn't either drive American cars, and that it was before a network would work out a deal to advertise a car - imagine the #1 program today showing a closeup of a Mercedes-Benz every week, with no MB commercials, it would be nuts ).

You’re all right—she was in on taking Lucy from Val. But, playing devil’s advocate, poor Gary was suffering deeply, trapped in the grip of addiction, and Val didn’t seem cut out for Southfork life or eager to stay. Miss Ellie likely thought she was doing what was best for her granddaughter. In that context, it feels less evil and more like a desperate, flawed attempt to shield Lucy.  And, if we're honest about a young Val, it was not unreasonable to believe that she fed into Gary's dependency, which inhibited her maternal capacity.

Larry Hagman was the breakout star of Dallas and both he and JR became pop culture phenomenons, not just in this country but internationally. That gave him leverage in contract renegotiations. Larry was the reason CBS primetime rode high from 1980-1985 and I'm pretty sure it's documented that Larry had the highest salary of a CBS primetime star in that era. He might also have had the highest salary of a CBS primetime star during the final 6 seasons of Dallas.

    • When I was a kid, I would watch DOOL with my mom. I remember Denise as Susan so well. And later, of course, on GH. How sad to hear she has passed. RIP.
    • I have to dig that scene up on YT. I'm glad they gave them some kind of happy ending, even if it was really late. Interesting! I remember Justin and Sarah being involved, but I either forgot or never caught their backstory. The girl with money and social position of course turns out to be Jackie. He sort of did to Sarah what Vanessa did to his brother! I do remember Justin started out as not the greatest guy. Kind of a horn dog. It's only when Ross comes on that he becomes the "good" brother. I only have some vague memories of Ben and Hope, mostly of when they were in a positive relationship. He certainly changed over time. "Chill" would be the way I would describe Ben (along with "handsome but kind of a yawn") for most of his time on GL, so hearing he once had a violent temper is very surprising.
    • Yes. That's called good writing.
    • interesting idea.  That makes sense, as MVJ seems to have set up each character development (traits) for future plot developments.
    • I really enjoyed today's episode. It showcased a lot of the other cast and I saw hints of storyline potential (Smitty & Bill). Martin definitely has some anger issues and I recall him being overly scared about protecting his family and having all the doors locked, coming out of one of his "dreams". There's obviously a lot going on there and I can't wait to find out more. I'm thinking June is going to be more than just the issue story of the week. I think she just might be related to one or more of our main characters. As for Tomas, yes, Alex Alegria is not the strongest actor, but he's pretty to look at and he emotes something. I'm just not sure what that something is yet.
    • No. Absolutely No. I don't know who this is... since it's just some random Twitter quote... But NO. The only parallel between OG Caroline's leukemia and Liam's tumor... is that they are both having cancer. That's it. Other than that... I see absolutely no similarities.  Caroline hid her sickness almost till the last moment. She was also giving the viewers signs that she is not well for days if not weeks before the diagnosis. It was not like Liam... falling down and hitting his head on a table and bam he has a tumor. Caroline's storyline broke our hearts, because of her attempt to live out the rest of her days with dignity and grace. It was written slowly and with care. What we are seeing right now with Liam is the complete opposite. It's begging the viewers for empathy and cheap tears. It's so in your face and trashy... I can't believe they are using cancer for something like this. Bradley Bell should never do terminal stuff again in his stories. It's borderline offensive to people who actually have lost relatives to cancer. To me it is.
    • I was thinking that June could be Kat's mother and Eva is Nicole and Ted's.
    • You won't even miss her because Nola will be dominating the show till Raven comes back. Literally... there will be no boring second. Nola is just starting. You won't believe what will follow. Haha. And then as soon as that storyline is finishing up, Raven is back in top form.
