Star Trek returns with streaming series

I would tend to favor syncing them as while there are no stories which do "part one on TNG, part two on DS9" common to other shows in shared universes as there are a few cross-references between the two shows that will be more fun if they are synced.

At the very least, I think it is important to watch the DS9 pilot movie "Emissary" directly after the TNG two-parter "Chain of Command" since they are very loosely connected (hopefully that doesn't stray too far into spoiler territory).

Season 7 of TNG and season 2 of DS9 are a little more connected so I would 100% try and sync them even if you don't sync the first season of DS9.

I would argue there's only a handful of eps in the last two seasons of TNG that are relevant to DS9. Those eps mentioned certainly are, as is "Journey's End" with Wil Wheaton's return and the penultimate episode of TNG ("Preemptive Strike") which IIRC both deal with the Maquis, who are an ongoing issue in DS9.

Star Trek Discovery debuted its fifth/final season with two episodes during first week of April 2024.
I enjoyed it.
Well the premise of the season is based
on classic Next Gen, specifically Season 6, Episode 20.  Watch it that NextGen ep, if you can!, you don't even need to know who any of the characters/storylines are for Next Generation to enjoy the episode - it's a standalone that's a classic.
This episode: link to memoryalpha summary of that NextGen eppy: (The Chase)

I'm excited about Discovery for the first time in years.

SDCC Trek stuff. Carol Kane remains a delight:

I'm glad Lower Decks is back in October, but I wish it wasn't ending - I can't tell if it's down to Paramount's money woes or the higher-ups being petty bc it's been more popular than Discovery and S31, or both. (Which is another reason I'm convinced they're dragging their feet on the Picard spinoff - neither LD nor Picard Season 3 came from the main creative heads, and both have been far more popular than the other seasons of Picard or DSC - but I may just be being a tinhat conspiracist on this, as money at Paramount is super tight and the streamer will likely collapse soon and sell everything Trek off to another outlet.)

At least Tawny Newsome is jumping to another Trek show (and also writing for Starfleet Academy) - but I'm not super into either premise, though I love Justin Simien.

The Section 31 film looks deeply tryhard but also looks like it will at least be reasonably diverting dumb fun. I am at least interested in it taking place in the time gap between the Kirk movie era and TNG, and I'm happy for more Michelle Yeoh. I'm glad this edgelord pet project of Alex Kurtzman has been relegated to just a streaming movie (though it clearly seems to be a pilot film to me for the originally planned series fans were not enthused by).

I don't have high hopes for Netflix picking up Prodigy for more, but I hear it's doing well over there. I'm in the middle of Season 2.

With Lower Decks sadly coming to an end it was nonetheless a thrill to have so many big guests in last week's penultimate episode, including Alexander Siddig and Andrew Robinson as Bashir and Garak and amazingly, Jolene Blalock as T'Pol. Blalock married very rich years ago and has notably kept out of the public eye since Enterprise, citing an unhappy experience with Rick Berman and co. She was so good in the role in an often-messy show with pockets of greatness (Manny Coto's Season 4 was especially good), I'd always wanted her to return and hoped it would happen this year. I'm glad I was right.

Hopefully LD will get renewed on another streamer sometime or get a feature continuation as Paramount continues to decay. I still hope the same can be true for Prodigy on Netflix, and eventually the mooted Legacy spinoff though Terry Matalas is now at Marvel doing the Vision show. (Jeri Ryan notably turned down other opportunities to do a spinoff without Matalas and Legacy.) It is not lost on me that the more popular, non-Alex Kurtzman run shows are getting pushed out or frozen on ice, though that may be a tinhat conspiracy theory on my part. SNW is of course very popular and a great show, but it's the creative outlier vs. the others.

Oh, and I forgot Alfre Woodard! What a thrill.

The Section 31 movie sure is something! I do think these smaller scale and more specific movies are what they should be doing, but oof.

I didn't realise there was a topic here on LD but those final two episode were thrilling. I never thought I'd see Jolene Blalock and Alfre Woodard back, even if it was just their voices.

I love SNW and I'm super intrigued by Starfleet Academy, especially since it attracted such a good cast. They really need some new blood for their other shows and endevors though.

I agree that Lower Decks was great and Section 31 was ... a choice?

Section 31 dialogue writing made Bold&Beautiful look intelligent.
Michelle Yeoh elevates everything she does, but wow this was a pretty bad script.

I am missing SNW, I hope they soon announce the first airdate of the coming season.

And Ron sort of did like a half-assed rewrite to bring them together. Apparently, Stephanie had never met Alex until 2022, even though she already knew Sonny, Joe and Vic
    • Friday Thoughts:    June and Hayley are going to turn out to be related, or else why the casting on June's character if not for that.  Their voices and mannerisms are similar and Marquita had mentioned in an interview that we would be finding out more about Hayley's backstory.   Tomas/Eva/Kat is for sure going to be moving full steam ahead.. and I can't wait

Dani/Bill = yawn    Bill/Smitty = Interest reeved up and we all know that means the secret involving Martin/Smitty/Anita is kicking into high gear for May sweeps. Vanessa/Nicole = A satisfying friendship scene.. and Nicole's statement about Vanessa's outside interests.. I did not see that coming Nicole/Andre = I noticed that Andre volunteered knowing about the affair, but managed to withhold the nugget of information where he had convinced Ted not to confess to Nicole. Dani/Ted = This perked my interest Nicole/Silk Press Sheila = A great way to end a Friday episode.  Sometimes grandma's soaps shouldn't be discarded, but followed. Martin/Smitty = Kat is right that Smitty is too good for Martin.. and Martin did act as though he missed his afternoon nap. Ashley/Derek = Unpopular opinion.. I actually kind of missed them.   I view their scenes as a great way to kickstart a drinking game... take a shot anytime you wonder to yourself what is the point to their characters and/or either one of them says something cringey.  You'll be guaranteed to be buzzing by the end of the episode Previews for next week: Looks like Nicole has found out about Dani/Andre's FWB set up? Kat vs Silk Press Sheila looks promising.
    • I think it depends on whether the character has a passionate fanbase. A character like Ava always has people who will defend her and back her up, as does a character like Nina (when they used to write for Nina, anyway). Dante doesn't.
    • Go 'head, Martin!! GATHER.   Oh my goodness!!! Now we are getting Bill/Smitty. The combos today.
    • Yeah; I feel like, in previous regimes, it wasn't as consistent as this. You could go episodes without it changing. I just hate the random indent on the secondary head writer.
    • Got it. I vaguely remember this being discussed. I guess it's fair.
    • Why does this Smitty/Kat talk feel like foreshadowing what's coming with Martin's Secret?   Hahaha. Not Kat and Tomas keep getting business in their way. And uh oh...Eva.   Oh, there's Ashley and Derek. Mmmm those pants.   And ooooooooo another Ted/Martin scene. YES, PLEASE.   Andre...no, no, no!!!! This is going to come back on you with Dani!!
    • I believe in the separation of church and soap.
    • Danny and Rocco..... and Lulu(who usually annoys the heck out of me) were the best thing about today's boring episode. Even Sasha and Willow's were

I'm all for the long game, but this is stuff is going on and on and on..........
    • Definitely. Paul and Eric said as much in their zoom in January. I think October might see the real vision of the new team.
