Especially an African-American father. "Gay and transgender subjects are not comfortably discussed in the African-American community," Horsford says. "We might see that our children are different but we don't tell anybody about it. We all know that church choir director who never got married and his mother still insists it's because he never met the right girl. We may want to say, 'Oh, Mama, c'mon, we know!' But we keep it polite. I love that this story on The Bold and the Beautiful is ultimately about truth and integrity and acceptance. It's going to stir up a lot of positive talk in our community—and hopefully in all communities."

I'm so sick of this. Queer people are treated like sh!t across all communities, why is the black community always singled out?

Anyway, good for them I guess. I loved Amen.

I have wondered that myself. Why IS the African-American community singled out for its treatment of gays and transgendered people? I used to believe it was a combination of our deeply-held beliefs (Bible-based, traditional, even conservative) and the history of the civil rights movement in this country. But I'm not so sure anymore.

I just hope it's not to try and make Maya more the victim, her pity party now has gotten pathetic

I expect Maya to be beaten and raped in a vicious hate crime before too long.

I feel like this narrative took hold after Obama was elected because Prop 8 also passed during the same election. Homophobes used it to say "Look at how much the blacks hate the gays!" I throw it on the stereotype heap with "All black people go to Baptist churches with rousing music."

I think it will be her friend the dayplayer. He'll be killed and we can all watch Maya cry as $Bill gets a look of understanding and sympathy on his face because he finally "gets it."

It did become the narrative after Prop 8, when I believe the polling showed AA overwhelmingly voted in favor of Prop 8's passage. It annoys me too, but it doesn't help, that black people accept it as fact and say it themselves, like in this interview, time and time again.

Blacks do tend to be socially conservative, but that is changing. The church is a heavy influence on most black communities and that means that attitudes still remain strongly conservative.
