She was a true beauty when she was younger, and she possessed one of best voices of any actress ever. The list of people she worked with is amazing. She made some good movies too. Key Largo, Designing Woman, Written On The Wind, To Have And Have Not, Orient Express, Millionaire, Big Sleep...not bad for someone never considered the greatest actress. RIP

What she lacked in acting talent, however, she more than made up for in charisma. These twerk-happy ho's of today could learn a lot from someone who knew how to be sexy and alluring without coming across as a drunken, illiterate, half-naked slut.

RIP Ms. Bacall. May God be with you (& Bogie) and all your loved ones.

She was a stunning beauty, and one of those women who remained beautiful. I know some women consider the word "handsome" an insult to a woman, but I think she fit that well.

She also had such crazy charisma.

She was a great example of the gods and goddesses the studio system found and built, and which are so rare to see in today's industry.

Spooky that she passed away so soon after Robin Williams. I try not to believe in that "three" rule, but wow.

Lots of tributes:

Lauren Bacall was a notorious pain in the ass IRL - she was, I suspect, deeply insecure about being such a complete product of the Hollywood star machine from a very young age, to the point that a lot of critics today dismiss her as just that.

She was not the powerhouse actress or technical talent like an Ingrid Bergman or Hepburn or others of that era; instead she was a personality, a molded creation built by the studios and men like Howard Hawks. She had something that you both can and cannot teach, a very specific star quality and onscreen charisma that a lot of other big stars coast on today. The difference, I think, is that unlike a lot of them Betty Bacall never wanted to coast on charisma - she demanded to be taken seriously, she wanted to move in all the inner circles but also make everyone know and recognize that she was as good as the rest, whether she actually was or not.

Even when she wasn't as good as them, she came from humble roots, she was taught to work hard, she never stopped working. She had some great turns in modern arthouse films like Lars von Trier's Dogville and others, stuff a lot of the old Hollywood stars would never think or dare to touch. She always wanted to appear to be on the cutting edge, in style, even in her 70s and 80s. She kept up that old studio system work ethic and she held on very, very tightly to the classic style and the old grit. Lauren Bacall was a product, but she was also a very hard worker and a real legend, for all the right reasons. She earned her right to be a pain in the ass.

    • oh, definitely! It's too bad she hit the start of a rough transition period for the show. She shines, but she's stuck with bad story and some (if not exactly bad) not great co-stars.
    • Thanks. I'm glad we have some fan memories of these years as this is such a typically snide take on the genre. It's also poorly written and reminds me a great deal of the tedious "snark" recaps that became popular in the '90s. The end in particular. The 1979/80 stuff I have seen is much more polished than a number of soaps at the time. It was very easy to watch and not too bogged down in past story.  Margo is played by Ann Williams, who was on what seemed like every soap. I think she said Margo was her favorite role.  These episodes aren't consecutive, but if you ever have time, they are worth a watch. They are bits and pieces from January and April of 1979 - April in and out of prison, her past calling to her via her psychic powers (and the suicide of Miles' wife Denise, who had murder framing in mind). April 1979 has the end of Winter Austen (such a fantastic soap name).  I don't want to drop a ton of links but you can find playlists on Youtube.
    • And the rating 'wars' continue...hehe.
    • Well, it was fun while it lasted for Rebecca Herbst. Le sigh.
    • I am wholeheartedly enjoying this show. I just haven't been able to post as much as I used to. But yes, this episode needs to be submitted for the EMMYs and there needs to be wins. I better NOT see Y&R, DAYS, or B&B winning in categories over BTG. I feel like the only show that is giving BTG an ounce of competition this season is GH.
    • I never thought the day would come, but too much MM for me.
    • I think it may be that the character was brought in for a specific purpose and then became popular with viewers, and the show didn't know how to respond.  The choice to pivot away from Simon/India may show that you are right and they didn't care for her...although pairing them up may be another sign they didn't care for her. I don't connect well with this period but it does make me happy seeing some of these characters before the great purge and some of the surprises - I'd forgotten the wonderful Maureen O'Sullivan popped up to be bumped off. So typical of soaps by this point, but it doesn't grate as much as later on when Y&R would bring on any random cast member from Small Wonder. I'm also amazed at this time at just how much money the show must have had. The costumes for the Founder's celebration in summer 1984, or whatever it was, looked gorgeous.
    • Which officially started to feel that way today with them hearing each other out as they confronted each other at the same time.    Same. He was even catching himself when he was about to go overboard or do those tics that people don't seem to like. He failed a bit at the end, but he carried. It makes me think about a month back when it was discussed that the actor was better in other things he's been in. And I questioned then if that meant that he was playing Martin more intentionally. I questioned that briefly again today because he was giving.
