Empire: Discussion Thread

Sadly, I have lost interest in Empire. You know its bad when last season I was the biggest fan. Mostly cause (in no particular order):

1. The influx of Latinos (and none being afro Latinos). Not sure whether it is networks trying to increase the share of Latino HH ratings or just show runners bowing to their complaints over lack of presence.

2. Cookie becoming a cartoon. Every scene she had was OTT and played for laughs. Tone it down and let TPH be the dramatic actress that she can be.

3. Jamal and who he's screwing. They constantly define Jamal by his sexuality. I'd think that would take a backseat to other story for him now that he's been accepted by his father.

4. Anika's story. I couldn't stomach her being so pathetic over men. Especially that kid Hakeem. They couldn't find anything else for her. She's a well educated socialite from a wealthy family. She should have connections. At least have a boarding school class mate who had a crush on her. she could marry him and he be rich enough to indulge his new bride's music industry whims. Come on.

I didn't even watch the last 3 epis of this season. I doubt I'll go back to watch them and just try go pick it up in March. Maybe!?

Actually this looks far more promising to me. It has a season 1 feel to it. None of my problem areas were visible:

1. Not one Latino shown.

2. Cookie seemed toned down. They put dramatic scenes in if her instead of comedy. Hope that's a theme.

3.  No clip of Jamal with a love interest of any gender (cis, trans, or anywhere in between. Praise).

4. Didn't see Anikka.  And that didn't bother me at all.

So these two are f--king. See I dont like that. Now its obvious why Jamal gets so much favoritism on the show. The writing is slanted towards him and he gets to sing like 5 songs an episode. Id be pissed if I were the other cast members

Wow! Who would have thunk? Jamal front and center all the time even when it makes very little sense. The sexual fluidity nonsense should have been done with Hakeem, especially since gay rappers is a hot topic. Jamal getting that story was ridiculous. Thank goodness it was a 20 second arc, just like everything else on this clusterfuck!

what the shiggidity!? Are you sure about that?

Me no likey. Lee is old enough to be Jussue's daddy. I've just never been into the May December romance.

So the episode was much better to me. As I thought, most of my problem areas were cleared up. What's still bothering me is Kitty. But from the preview, writers seem to be flipping her motivation from loneliness and wanting Hakeem to birthing an heir to gain power and interest in Empire. Now this makes more sense. However, it should have been lucious' kid. I wouldn't even mind a rewrite in this instance.

Hakeem was voted CEO in the most ridiculous board meeting, reconciled with his family, merged the 2 companies, reunited with Laura after calling her a bitch and then deflowers her as they share I love yous in ONE eppy!  Insane!

Ronda and her God Is Dead had no emotion behind it.  Did she lose a baby or a nail?  I see no trauma at all.  None!  Nada!  Zero!  Zip!  Zilch!

    • Ted has been icky and giving off bad guy vibe from the first moment I saw him. I have a sensor for that and it was beeping! So...don't put all the blame on Silkpress. The woman needs a good psychiatrist, true... but Leslie is just one of the skeletons in HIS closet. Ted is even a bigger monster, because he's hidden.  IT WAS A PERFECT REVEAL. Perfect, because in the beginning of the show... Dani was envying her sister's marriage... In these first few messy weeks... her own misery and life spiraling was contrasted to the picture-perfect marriage Nicole and Ted seemed to have. (on first glance). What happened now... is very very smart writing. THIS IS THE MOMENT THE MASKS ARE FALLING! The message it delivers to me is this. It says - no matter how things look... they are not what they seem. You can't judge a marriage by how it appears to be. Aaaand in the long run... maybe the messiest-looking people (Dani Dupree, I'm talking about you!) HAVE less issues and problems than the ones that seem to have it all. The ones with the MOST skeletons in the closets and the dirty pasts.   It was an AHA moment for the whole family and the viewers and a way forward for Dani and Nicole to bond even more and realize they are MORE alike than they are different. Now it will be quite a different dynamic, because Dani will have to SUPPORT someone and not be the one getting her wounds licked always. And also another lesson. Some men are dogs. Not all of them. But a lot of them are. The difference is... some can't be easily recognized. These creeps have put very impressive masks. The show is doing this perfectly. Beat by beat. Exploring classic soap opera themes and stories. Real-life characters and situations, that are relatable and make you think... Hmm... maybe I need to dig a little deeper next time I say "these people are perfect" or otherwise. Maybe I need to think MORE. That type of storytelling. It's not easy to do that.  Brava BTG.  B-R-A-V-A!
    • I speculate that Nicole will go through cycles of numbness/grief/rage.  At some point later on, regardless of DNA results (or faked results), whether there was a baby swap or not, I think Nicole will forgive Eva, and eventually love her someday.  Nicole will come to understand that Leslie gaslighted/manipulated Eva.  Nicole will be her loving self, although more guarded than before.   Just my thoughts.
    • Lol. That comment was just silly.  I feel like The Guiding Light started it when they made me love Roger Thorpe. Leslie is pussycat in comparison and there is a lot of story to go  for her and Eva.
    • Your posts continue to amuse me. I don't know anyone else who thinks Leslie and Eva should "hightail it out of town."  And listen, soaps have been FOR DECADES keeping around villains who we know would be jailed in real life. So is it crazy to think "they are just going to let this slide"? No. It's kind of hilarious to watch you take everything that happens on this show and distort it or lead me to think, "Huh???"
    • I can't even count the amount of magazine covers and photoshoots KKL has been in the past few months. Shame that the show is not mirroring the success she's having. It would have been so great to see both KKL and Brooke be on top.  I'm still holding a grudge that Brad rewrote the company take-over to a nothing... and then nulled Brooke to being a romance beggar again.
    • I'm also getting an error that I haven't seen before, but there's been a couple of different variations, so not going to worry about it for now.
    • Finally got to sit down and watch. Wow!  When LesDanLuAnn said to Ted, this your daughter. I started tearing up...... Eva got me.  I felt like I was watching a soap opera.

    • The drag was when Tad and Edmund went to Budapest (?) in 1997 to get Maddie back from Dimitri.
    • I know it's not happening but on the surface, there's nothing left for Leslie and Eva to do but to hightail it out of town, if they value their lives. Leslie has destroyed Ted's image, embarrassed and humiliated his wife and children, and unearthed the wrath of the entire Dupree family. She's crazier than I thought if she thinks they are just going to let this slide.
    • It will be amazing if we could record the skipped episodes. Did someone sent a list of the skipped youtube episodes to the guys that are filling in the gaps?
