I hope she does not fall into bed with Vernon. But then again, I wouldn't be surprised. It would be a very Alexis type thing to fall into bed with Lucious' right hand man. Which speaking of Vernon, I feel like he might be someone we all need to watch out for. Wouldn't be surprised if Lee makes him be the "dark horse" in the bid for power, and he swoops in and gains control.

I think some of the online press, at least, does resent it for being an unapologetic, somewhat broad soap. It does a lot of things in terms of brash, big opera, it doesn't claim it's a mature "drama" and it doesn't pretend to be politically correct or have all of its identity or sexual politics in line, because life isn't like that and neither are a lot of people in the world it seeks to portray. When I hear people crying that the female characters are somehow incorrectly presented - I mean, the entire show hangs on Cookie. Should Cookie be someone else?

That being said, the critics that do knock it don't matter. The show is a massive, runaway hit. And it has so much heart and guts.

Empire isn't for everyone, and I think we've been in a period where the shows that get the most attention have almost always appealed to the same general audience. This show comes along, and it's a hit, and it gets tons of press, but it's not necessarily a show for the Mad Men crowd or the Breaking Bad crowd or whomever (not to say that fans of those shows won't/don't watch this...), so many of those critics are annoyed that attention is being paid to this when there are many more "compelling" "serious" "adult" "smart" options out there. In other words, they can't deal. Hopefully, Empire is just the beginning of different types of shows getting love and attention from the general press.

I see on youtube people are calling it a racist show. I see because it's on Fox. I wonder if another station like Tv One produce it, what they would say.

Specking of Fox & black drama. I wouldn't mind the reboot of New,York Undercover, I don't see how black people can complain about that.

I think there's room for both prestige dramas and crazy soaps under the sun - I love both. I can watch Hannibal or The Fall or GOT or whatever and still have room for Empire and TWD. They're all excellent, and I'm sure someday I'll finally get around to watching Breaking Bad and I'll dig that too. There's no rational reason to like one and resent the other, but people do it. I think what makes a lot of critics insecure is that the middle ground used to be reserved for stuff like Shonda Rhimes shows or whatever, and Empire doesn't pretend to play by the rules or pretenses towards legitimacy of shows such as those.

Too many critics love to say that those nighttime soaps (including HTGAWM, which I think is pretty bad, or the various dreadful fantasy shows) or procedurals, stuff like Person of Interest or Sleepy Hollow or Supernatural or Elementary or whatever, are actually not what they appear to be, to claim that they're actually very smart because of some quirk of their premise or overall character which proves they're something different. I find most of them very ordinary and uninteresting, but the point is that they had some sort of hook which allowed a lot of critics to pretend this was actually something with a more highbrow or genre element that makes them something different. Empire is simply a soap, it's not pretending to be something more high-minded or progressive (its progressive credentials are its pedigree and cast makeup), and it's one populated by people of color behaving questionably, and I think all of that mix makes people very insecure. Especially in an age where any kind of pop culture criticism is expected to be driven by how well you tout your ideology.

Most of these critics are white so they understand white crime shows but when it comes to black crimes to them it doesn't make since.

It all boils down to if your struggling to survive your going to something that you never thought of doing.

    • Just thinking how the Ruth/Leticia guest spot really cemented how Days had changed. Stunt casting with a campy/comedy character in a 'wacky' storyline was something that a few years previously would have been completely out of place on Days (and most other soaps for that matter).
    • I am interested to see how they handle Leslie/Dana down the road. If she continues in this path, it would be unrealistic to have her around. Like other shows have done this with a 'villian' character and ended up with people looking stupid putting up with someone they detest. Another thought-could they be building up to a murder story? Maybe Les/Dan will be left in a coma and we will have a whodunit with several characters as suspect. It would also be a chance to redeem her I wonder how long the show will go w/o resorting to soap cliche stories-twins,switched at birth, murder mystery, long lost child etc
    • Yeah, Martin really did make me laugh when him and Smitty jumped up to drag Leslie out. I am interested in seeing how this fallout will impact his storyline as well. Especially since he is so protective regarding his family/family's image. I am interested in seeing how he will interact with Eva for the time being, they did have a warmer interaction earlier on once they met. But he seems to have doubts about her possibly being Ted's right now. I wonder how long it might take for him to come around with her. I could see the younger generation warming up to her quicker than the older ones. Though of course I think there will be anger/tension for a while regarding the reveal and her role in it. Perhaps Naomi/Chelsea will ease up on Eva first then eventually Martin/Kat might down the line. I really do love Nicole. I'm glad that DD is playing her. She really is the heart of the family and also agree the show. She is so easy to root for and I'm looking forward to seeing how things work out for her. I am enjoying the development of most of the characters on this show. I enjoy most of them including Bill with his trifling self lol. I do feel that Bill's love for his daughters is genuine and that gives him some depth. A few of the characters I don't care for that much (like Bill, Ashley, Vanessa). I wasn't too big on Andre at first, but I am warming up more to him as the actor is settling into the role. I like most of the characters on this show. Also, I am interested in seeing what happens if Eva indeed goes and lives with the new doctor that was introduced. I could see this adding another layer to her story, maybe she will become more vixen-ish, on what type of relationship they end up having. And/or maybe she will end up becoming more hardened as she deals with being an outcast, especially if she falls out with Leslie as well. I think that AM will do a good job of showcasing the different layers of this character as she deals with the fallout of the affair/paternity reveal.

Got another sad news from the Bahamian community (not a celebrity)  https://www.instagram.com/p/DJMSrYCgyes/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== Former Bahamian Senate President J Henry Bostwick, Husband of former 1st Bahamian Female Cabinet Minister Dame Janet Bostwick is dead yesterday on his 86th birthday.    Thanks and for those who've aren't familiar with the talk shows in The Bahamas on this thread here, his talk show named The Freedom March with Dr Rodney Moncur that airs on ILTV and The Beat 103.5 FM Nassau every weekday afternoons. IIRC, he suffered a illness before he died.  Here's the link for his final taping of the show before his death: https://ewnews.com/this-is-powerful-rodney-moncurs-final-sign-off/

    • One thing I thought about is if Hayley will have a reaction to Bill threatening to kidnap and sell a baby. That's another level of viciousness and with her just having thought she was pregnant it might make her feel some type of way.
    • You're welcome. Fall 1982-Spring 1985 was the peak of primetime soaps. What a time to have been alive.
    • 1990/91 Cheers, Roseanne, A Different World, The Cosby Show, Empty Nest, The Golden Girls were still Top 10 shows, and Murphy Brown and Designing Women became Top 10 shows. It was the following season that I think was the transition season for sitcoms.
    • @xtr I loved Martin in Thursday's episode, he was almost a different character. I thought he was flirty, funny, carefree, and giggly. Glad I have someone to share my top 2 women(Nicole and Eva) with, I agree Nicole is the heart of the Dupree family, and also the heart of the show IMO. We rode into the show on the passenger side of her car, lol. What I am enjoying the most about the show, is that they did such a great job character building, because all I care about is the CHARACTER journey. Nicole, Eva, Leslie, Dani, Chelsea, etc. very invested in what's coming next. I even feel that way about Mona, Shanice, and Doug.
