Unpopular Opinions of 2014

New year, new UOs (or old ones)...

I'll start by saying...

1. Anyone who considers that showkilling bootleg Janet Wood bitch as any kind of effective EP's opinion is null and void.

2. Anyone that can take time out of their day to 'hate watch' a show deserves to be mocked by the show's staff, cast, and network execs (including those that I can't stand) for all time for their delusional entitlement.

3. For all the talk about those who rail against those who tell them to stop watching if they hate a show much and claim that they'll be the ones to beg them to come back, those haters will be the actual ones holding up the SOS signs and spearheading those petitions.

4. 'Bland' and 'boring' are code words that the majority of (non-) POC viewers feel threatened by a POC character whose mere presence threatens their raggedy white favorites (especially for prominent airtime), yet can't quite rag on their looks or acting.

I can't say much on Sabrina (since I can count the times that I've seen her on one hand), but I've no problem believing that a large percentage of the bile that was hurled her way (as well as the actress') would be non-existence if both character & actress were white without even watching that show.

As for the 'hatewatching' bull, it often gets mistaken for 'guilty pleasurewatching', which I proudly do. The difference is that folks who do the latter dont work themselves into a frothy fury over a show. The know when to fold 'em when it becomes truly unwatchable.

Sabrina was very boring during her triangle with Britt and Patrick. She has improved over the last couple of months IMO.

What? Sabrina is a terribly written and overpropped character. It has nothing to do with her not being white. That makes no sense. She's just annoying as hell.

That's exactly how I felt about her. I got sick of everyone talking about how great she was. Very bad writing.

And yet, viewers seem to be able to think of other words to describe them besides boring...I personally don't see the term used for Victoria at all...she's called lifeless, wet blanket, spoiled, daddy's girl, unkempt, any Nickname pertaining to wild hair that folks can come up with..just all kinds of things. But boring...nope. The same for Nick and Avery. Boring seems to have become some sort of code speak only reserved for non whites. It's just weird.

I've seen Victoria called boring before.

In fact I've seen people make threads about how boring and bland she is since AH took over the role.

that is not true. I remember this getting criticized quite a bit on here.

It is true.

There was a very brief reaction when Madison was moved into Ryan's orbit (which in itself was more about Gatschet being an alternative to Vasi) but that was less about Frankie & more about viewers hatred of Ryan.

By the time Madison was paired with Scott almost no one cared about trying her with Frankie again.

From the few times I have watched Days, I thought Will and a Sonny had ZERO chemistry.

I wouldn't mind if the entire Abbot Clan, except my Tracy, was replaced on Y&R. The Abbot/Newman feud is played out. If the Newman's are the major family then it's time they get a new rival family. The Abbots have gone as far as they can go.

But the whole characters like Devon and Sabrina are called boring because of skin color or cultural background isn't necessarily true.

If the Devon character had half the opportunities as his white counterparts maybe he wouldn't be boring.

Any actor of color could play Devon & he would still be labeled boring because it's near impossible to create a character worth rooting for with the scraps Bryton's been given.

He & Michael Graziadei's started on Y&R at about the same time yet viewers had no problem rooting for Graziadei even when Daniel's stories were horrible (porn addiction).

Cornelius Smith had everything Bryton James supposedly lacks (good looks, muscles, charisma, personality) yet nobody had much of a problem with his potential love triangle with Randi & Madison being ended before it began so Madison could be placed with white Ryan & Scott while Frankie & Randi sat on the backburner for the majority of the rest of their run.

Even less felt Randi could have been a salvageable character with a good recast they just wanted her written off the show because Vasi couldn't act.

Tika Sumpter & Michael B. Jordan (like many other minority actors in soaps) had to go to primetime & film to get half the opportunities they never would've been afforded in Daytime.

The issue isn't about who is being labeled boring. It's about an already limited group of actors being held to tremendously unfair standards by viewers when they can't spin straw into gold from the very little airtime & (usually) offensive writing they're given.

So we should just suck it up take crappy stories written for blacks? The problem isn't with viewers...its with the writers. The best storylines are almost always written for whites. In the past Y&R wrote some good storylines for their characters...but lately not so much.

And GH is worse. All of their black characters need to go.

BTW, I'm black.

Nooooooo lol. Im the opposite. If one family has to go,,keep the Abbotts. Individually their characters are much more interesting.

I don't know why Bryton and Graz are always compared as if all of us took to Daniel. Most of the time I didn't give damn about Daniel either. Daniel was not entertaining when he was written off and I can't remember the last story he had that was interesting. It would probably help if Bryton didn't play all Devon's scenes as holier than thou. The constant slugging gets annoying.

yeah her ethnicity had nothing to do with why people found her to be a bore. I think she could have had potential had they made her a psycho bitch as originally teased, but the perfect Mary Sue route was nauseating and a total snoozefest

The character of Rafe on Days is latino and I find him boring. Is his race the reason I feel that way? Jordan is played by an actress of Spanish descent; Im guessing that's the main reason I also find her to be the most boring new character of 2013.

The issues for Latinos actors are different than those of African American actors & their characters.

Latino actors are usually allowed more options in terms airtime & pairings (especially when they're lighter like Florenica Lozano or ethnically ambiguous like Maurice Bernard).

African American actors (no matter how light or ethnically ambiguous) are inevitably stuck in BLACK stories & punished (creatively) when those stories inevitably fail.

Bingo, bc he's a bore. Changing the actor isn't going to automatically make the character interesting.

Devon's a bore because the character is never allowed to do anything but exist as a diversity token.

Changing the actor isn't going to automatically make the character interesting.

It would keep viewers from labeling the character as boring.

Instead they would ignore his lack of airtime & story in exchange for rare glimpses of his abs (Cornelius Smith, Lamon Archey, Sean Blakemore)

They keep chem testing him with Mishael Morgan but those two have no chemistry together. She has chemistry with everyone else though.

The actresses Bryton's had chemistry with (besides Tatyana Ali) over the years (Adrianne Leon, Adrienne Frantz, Liz Hendrickson, Marcy Rylan) were never paired with him.

Sean on GH is boring. Having abs doesn't make him any more interesting
