January 5, 201412 yr Member Do you only watch Y&R bc again go take a look at the other soap threads and you'll see the white characters get their fair share of being called boring among other negative comments on a regular basis. Ive listed several examples above. Being white doesn't make them immune Yep, I only watch Y&R...however, I do keep track of what is going on with other soaps that I don't watch.

Then you should know damn well that many characters are called boring. This effort to turn it into something racial is confounding. I'm trying to understand it but I just don't see it.
January 5, 201412 yr Member I agree with this. Lulu/Dante, Tyler/Abby, Carter/Maya, and Cane/Lily are examples of happy but "boring" couples. I remember when AJ and Liz were paired together, some people perfered AJ to be with Carly because of their dysfunctional history. I also noticed on Y&R Hliary, Mason, and Tyler are now being called boring since they shifted the former two from being schemers and the latter from being in a triangle with Cane/Lily and paired him with Abby. I think that there will always be people that like the schemers then there will be those that like the hero/heroine types.
January 5, 201412 yr Member Happiness doesn't create drama. That being said, there's no reason why a couple can't be happy, as long as the characters (or at least one of the two) have some kind of story/drama going on. Endless scenes of characters walking around kissing, being happy, saccharine, talking about what great sex they had, about their lovely vacations, etc, does not a storyline make. Furthermore, a couple can be happy but still have sore spots or arguments. They can still have complicated dynamics. It's the constant sunshine and perfection that is the problem. I'm trying to understand it but I just don't see it. I don't go on the boards...I read the summaries. I am not trying to turn anything racial. I wasn't even the originator of this thought...I merely added my two cents in which I agreed because I have seen the labeled used excessively for POC.

Technically Nikki and Victor are a happy couple they have their share of drama but they have their lovely dovey moments too. I just can't stand the hypocrite Newmans and both have been annoying me for months. Like Lame and their constant sunshine with their kids. I'm tired of hearing them gush about their amazing children. I get enough of that in real life from my cousin's girlfriend constantly gushing about her amazing kid.

Victor & Nikki are relatively happy but still have a very complicated relationship and several issues to argue over. Lame is one of the WORST. I cannot believe there are stans out there who salivate at the thought of seeing these two forever sugary and talking about how great the twins are... and, worse, the network enables it!
January 5, 201412 yr Member I am at my wits end with Lane's kids....but their fans love it. They have nothing else going on so what choice do the writers have but to have them discuss kids.
January 6, 201412 yr Author Member I agree with this. Pretty much. While I may not necessarily be a fan of some of these pairings (namely because I am not a fan of one half of that pairing), them being happily committed in a relationship has nothing to do with it. That dreadful example of some wanting an alcoholic to be with the scum that thrives off of him being in the gutter simply proves my point.
January 6, 201412 yr Author Member But do you write treatises on a daily basis bemoaning how boring Devon is but never do the same for Noah, Kyle, Summer, etc? I repeat, my point was that many viewers have a lower tolerance for POC characters. They harp on and on and on about it while mentioning in passing or not at all the other boring folks that are just as bland. Places like soaps.com have many threads that pop up about who they think the most boring or useless characters are...EVERY black character on the show somehow lands in almost every post in the thread but others seem to escape such labeling. My point was not even about Devon. I just used him and Noah as an example because they are almost the exact same character used in the exact same way. That was obviously a mistake as I see folks couldn't resist the urge to do exactly what I said they would do. Devon can replaced with damn near any other POC character and your point is just as applicable. Edited January 6, 201412 yr by VirginiaHamilton
January 6, 201412 yr Member Yeah, I wanted an Carly/A.J./Liz triangle on GH. I still want it. I was under the impression I was watching a soap opera, not Touched by an Angel.
January 6, 201412 yr Author Member Then folks need not get offended or defensive when they're rightfully clowned for their stupidity in rooting for toxic mess while whining about happy couples 'eating up their show'.
January 6, 201412 yr Member Okay, let's unpack that, Virginia. Which part of what I'm doing or saying or feeling is wrong to you? I like A.J. and Liz for one set of reasons and don't find them boring I like A.J. and Carly for another set of reasons I want both couples to battle it out for years to come with a fourth party for Liz as well I find a vast swath of the characters on Y&R - be they white, black or fuschia - boring as hell Please enlighten me, or us, or folk as to how we should properly process what we watch. Absolutely...which is what I was getting at with my original Lane post. Begging for happy couples yet clowning the ones they get.
