Whether they are "needed" or not, these are good ways to increase viewer participation and engagement. A number of primetime shows have blogs and podcasts where showrunners, cast and crew take and answer questions from viewers on everything from storylines to editing to wardrobe. It's a great way to make viewers feel like they have some input. I think it's great that PP is straying farther and farther away from the ABC model of "Shut up and eat what we serve you."
