Spin off's that were better than the original

People say God looks out for the workin' man... Sure hope He's lookin' out for me...♫ My mother LOVED The Torkelsons and I had such a crush on Dorothy Jane. I have to say, I think the original series was better than the glossy revamp. I thought the Torkelsons (meaning the characters) got cheapened, they weren't as warmly and richly drawn in Almost Home. The Torkelsons was kind of a dramady and that was all scrapped. For instance, the Joey Lawrence episode of Almost Home where Dorothy Jane and Brittany Murphy are drooling over him and literally rip his shirt off. The whole thing kind of reminds me of that classic sell your soul thing in Hollywod, like that episode of Family Guy when Brian's pilot gets picked up.

Agreed. I saw more of Almost Home than The Torkelsons, but from what I remember, it was definitely more wholesome, self reflective, and definitely had serious dramatic moments balanced with the comedy. I'm guessing the-powers-that-be felt it was worth salvaging if they made it a little less Our House and more Full House.

Yes! Love that!

So, The Brady Kids, that wsan't Susan Olsen, was it? I'm assuming the original actors minus Susan did the voices, otherwise what a waste to have them all in the credits. Oh my God, two pandas and a bird in Mickey's wizard cap??

Nope, Susan was there too. It's the reunions that was always minus a Brady girl:

Variety Hour: Geri Reischl over Eve Plumb (Eve turned it down, given her success with TV movies/miniseries at the time, I don't blame her)

AVBC: Jennifer Runyon over Susan Olsen (Susan was on her honeymoon with her first husband in Jamaica)

Bradys: Leah Ayres over Maureen McCormick (Maureen had just had her daughter and wanted to stay home with her--and hated the script).

I suppose this might be more appropriate for the The Colbys thread, but The Colbys was touted as being bigger and better than its parent soap Dynasty, and I don't see that at all. Sure, the cast consisted of some Hollywood legends, but story, set, car, wardrobe wise? I would say it was less glitzy than Dynasty.

I would rather watch season 1 of The Colbys than the concurrent season of Dynasty, season 6... season 1 of The Colbys was messy but it does have some great moments and thank god for Stephanie Beacham. Though I would not want to watch either season 2 of The Colbys or season 7 of Dynasty as both suck lol.

I love 90210 and MP for two different reasons. I associate them because they were set in the same time and place, but I go to MP's glory days for soapy melodrama, while I go to 90210's glory days for earnest teen drama. I can't watch the earnest first few episodes of MP, nor can I watch the wannabe soapy later years of 90210.

The early years of MP and 90210 are about equal for me; I love both and I think of both as such iconic shows. But I can't watch the late seasons of Melrose whereas I can watch the mediocre late seasons of 90210 -- I think because 90210 had characters I invested in whereas MP was always plotplotplot, so when 90210 got bad it still had characters I cared about whereas when Melrose got bad it was just bad plots.

The Facts of Life over Diff'rent Strokes, for sure. Just in case my avatar doesn't make that clear already wink.png .

I think most people (including myself) hold this opinion because whereas DS was cutesy, FOL was soapy.

I went to college near Peekskill, and I wish my friends and I could have lived off campus in a house above Edna's Edibles. #cozyassexistencewakinguptothesmellsofMrs.Garrett'squicheandcookieseverymorningmovienightsinthelivingroomwithallthatfoodinthenextroom

I should also say that, as much as I love All in the Family and always will, I was a HUGE Maude fan when I was younger and it was on TV Land for the first time. Seriously, I wanted to BE Maude when I was 10. Well, the strong-willed part, not necessarily the wardrobe part  .

This is probably why Dorothy is my favorite Golden Girl :) .

And **small voice** I like The Golden Palace theme almost as much as the original GG theme ph34r.png .

Ol' hongry ass.

I always find it strange when people prefer Over Our Heads over Edna's Edibles. I also think it's strange that Mrs. G thought it was more appropriate to sell "novelties" than fresh baked goods in a town like Peekskill. To me, for as cheesy as it could be, nothing beats that stretch of episodes from Jo's arrival through to the EE fire. That's quintessential FOL.

LOL! I promise you all I'm not fat IRL.

Yes! There nothing like cozy Edna's Edibles. Over Our Heads seemed like a pretty transparent attempt to be bright and colorful and late '80s, even the new electric guitar rock theme reflected that.

Hey now, I will FOREVER stan for the 85-88 FOL theme. That closing theme is ACES! tongue.png

And I actually really like that first episode of Season 7, where they find out that EE burned down.

Angel > Buffy, as a whole series. Individual episodes and seasons were better than Angel, but as a whole i much prefer Angel. Buffy seasons 1, 4, 7 are awful and 6 is so-so. Angels weak point was the end of s4, and tho i dont like s5 i think its a much better seasons still over most of buffy.

I loved Season 6 of Buffy, but agree with you that Angel was the better series overall. Darla and Cordelia, that's all I need to convince me.
