It's more like a play with songs than a typical musical. It was far better than the movie it was adapted from.
June 11, 201213 yr Member What do you think of James Corden winning? I know a lot of people here hate NPH - did you have any opinion on his hosting?
June 11, 201213 yr Member I do not like NPH, he's way too self-aware and cutesy for my taste. Everything is so staged and "look at me, I'm so funny and talented!" with him. Ugh. I'm happy for James Corden. I haven't seen One Man, Two Guvnors though. I liked Gavin & Stacey, so it's always nice to see someone have success that most Americans probably have never heard of. He seems like a genuinely nice lad too. Edited June 11, 201213 yr by Y&RWorldTurner
June 11, 201213 yr Member He seems to be fairly unpopular in the UK (a lot of "He's gotten above himself" feeling). I have only seen him on Doctor Who but I enjoyed him on there; he even came back the next season. I was reading about all the controversy over Sondheim's condemnation of the Porgy and Bess remake and how this almost killed the show before it even opened. I wonder how their business is. I guess if Eric ever comes back, he'd know.
June 11, 201213 yr Member To be honest, the Porgy and Bess remake looked like a mess to me overall. Though I have only seen clips of it and heard some of the songs. Audra McDonald, who won the Best Actress in a Musical Tony, is a big operatic ham that turns me right off. Edited June 11, 201213 yr by Y&RWorldTurner
June 11, 201213 yr Member When Judith Light left Daytime, a light went out. She was absolute greatness! The genre wasn't the same without her!
June 11, 201213 yr Member Here are Stephen Sondheim's comments, published as a "Letter to the Editor" in the New York Times, regarding the current "Porgy & Bess" revival. http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/08/10/stephen-sondheim-takes-issue-with-plan-for-revamped-porgy-and-bess/

June 12, 201213 yr Member The film had the same name. It was an Irish/independent film. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Once_(film)
June 12, 201213 yr Member Between the movie and the B'way show, though, I'm just sick of hearing about "Once." I'd much rather see "Ounce", the heart-warming tale of two potheads who find their way (through the haze) to each other...through song.
June 12, 201213 yr Member Poor James Earl Jones. For a hot second, he thought he'd won the Tony. I do not like NPH, he's way too self-aware and cutesy for my taste. Everything is so staged and "look at me, I'm so funny and talented!" with him. Ugh. Basically.
June 12, 201213 yr Member If only Rosie O'Donnell had been there to tell him falsely that he'd won....
