Unpopular Opinions: 2012 Edition

I'll go first:

B&B

- While not perfect, the show is currently in the best shape it's been in since 2003.

Y&R

- Genie Francis is terrific as Genevieve Atkinson. I know she wasn't well liked in her first few months on her show, but I'm currently watching June 2011 episodes and I LOVE her campy take on the character, despite the overall wretchedness of the storyline. Although I never saw Francis on GH, so I don't have that to compare it to. I'd love to see her on B&B in a Sally Spectra/Jackie Marone type role.

- Phyllis is one of very few characters to actually flourish under MAB (save for the Lucy custody madness). And of course, I still consider La Stafford to be the best actress in daytime.

- Maura West was AT LEAST as miscast as Diane as Shari Shattuck was as Ashley.

I agree so much! I feel like soo much happened to and with Billy's AJ, that now that SK is here it just doesn't feel the same.

Not to mention, BW had better chemistry with the other Quartermaines.

Guza at his peak was a far superior writer than Carlivati has ever been, and he had better taste in dialogue/script writers.

He certainly wrote with more depth and nuance.

I miss Guza and hate how budget looking and horrifyingly tacky GH has become since Frank and Ron took over

DOOL is the absolute pits right now. Eileen Davidson is the only interesting thing about it and even her story is like watching paint dry.

I'm enjoying Y&R a lot now.

Oh and Laura Wright >>>>>>>>>>> every other flop female lead in the game

Not to say that I didn't have major issues with Guza, but looking and seeing what the show is reduced to now, I can now look back at him with more objectiveness.

Carlivati tries to rely too much on stories and characters that were popular 25 years ago, and believe me, that's going to become problematic in the future once the glow wears off.

Guza had issues and one could rightfuly argue he had no use for GH history (neither did Gloria Month, so?), but at least he tried to keep the show moving forward. All I see is pure regression with Carlivati's writing. It's all very superficial and one dimensional. I'm all for using history to propel stories into the future, I just don't think Carlivati is doing it authentically. The characters all feel like cartoons, more so than they did before.

Nothing Carlivati has done comes close to Guza's '96 and early '98 stints to me (and yes, I realize those eras had their issues too).

I don't find current GH the best thing since sliced bread. I'm still bored and the acting is so lackluster it ruins what could be decent scenes.Bringing back everyone from the 80s doesn't mean a damn thing to me and all it's showing is that some people really aren't good actors(Finola Hughes)

GH missed out greatly by not focusing on the Quartermaines the last decade. I feel like they are the central family of the show, and if they had took the time to reinvest in them (or not completely dismantling them to begin with) the show would/could be in better shape.

They have SO much history, and so many branches on that family tree that could have been invested in that just makes me sad at all of the missed opportunities. No other family on GH comes close.

Yes, their shtick, with the constant fighting, gets old at times...but even when it gets to that point, I still find myself smiling.

But the central family of the show was the Hardys and we're down to two people related to that family still on canvas. Not to mention it feels like there is less hospital focus than ever and the little focus there is right now is downright juvenile.

What's a Hardy? blink.png

I'm playing...but that's the point, the Quartermaines actually sustained a presence, while the Hardy's drifted off into irrelevance ages ago. And the fact that the Quartermianes actually are apart of the hospital could have really worked in favor of the whole ~hospital~ aspect.

I can't believe people miss Guza. He, and even moreso Pratt, are just horrible writers indulging in nihilistic excess that sometimes bordered on the obscene. The image of 40 year old Sonny strangling 75 year old Edward with his necktie was disturbing--and this was the romantic hero! Georgie's death, the repeated replaying of Emily's death, random carnage with Cooper and was it he hanging himself so Maxie found the body? And Michael strangling AJ while Monica watched and did nothing, Luke paying Coleman to sleep with Tracy, and on and on and on with these neverending examples of bad taste mixed with a writer who has no interest in morality and meaning. He had an occasional good scene and seemed to have a hidden desire to write sitcoms with people like Diane and Spin, but for every harmless attempt at silliness were 20 examples of chaos and cruelty. Good riddance.
