It's a loss, very sad and sadly not that surprising.

I saw the article linked to earlier than featured several photographs of her out at a club the other night. Her body took all it could take and it finally gave out.

A tragic end to one of the most brilliant talents of the last 50 years.

I think she's a teen, I know Whitney was pregnant with her, when she filmed the "I Will Always Love You" video and that was 1992 ish?

Am I the only one who feels like this is surreal?

To be honest I feel like she left us a long time ago.

It's sad that out of the really big music icons from the mid-80's that I grew up with and had longevity in their careers that Madonna has seemingly been the only one that's kept her life together. I guess Prince too, but he's always been such a recluse.

Pop icons from the mid-80's were so over the top and more than just artists to those of us who grew up, they were big cultural figures whose influence extended into many different areas.

Pre-1990, nobody would have guessed that Whitney would be the first, second or third one of them (of the greats from the 1980s and, I agree, they were just bigger in the 1980s) to fall apart like that. She seemed to have it all and have it all together better than the other three put together.

No obvious signs of anything (i.e. drug use, I assume) in the room.

I loved sell-out Whitney. LOL

It's a good thing Clive Davis forced her to go pop, instead of the gospel-tinged R&B Whitney originally wanted to do. Had she gone down that path, she probably wouldn't have made an impact.

Whitney was American's sweetheart and pop-princess. The anti-Madonna, who parents never thought was a good role-model for their children for obvious reasons.

Pop icons from the 80's all had something different to contribute to the landscape of the pop charts, unlike today where I can't tell most of them apart.

I really would have guessed Aretha would have died first.

MJ death was devasting but I think this is more devasting. I still feel this is a bad dream.

Yea. I know.

And while I can see where that music was seen as selling out, it truly does have a unique, fun style, with some life to it - it's nowhere near as bland as some of what Clive Davis pushed on people over the years.

I guess her true voice may have been more of a throwback to Aretha or disco, but those first years of her big career hold up very well.

That's the price of Autotune. Whitney had that big voice, as Mariah later did, and Celine. Now, even if someone has a voice, can we hear it, when the alternative is someone buying up a robot-voiced Katy Perry singing about a threeway?

During the 80's it seems like a lot of critics and elites saw the sounds as being crap and weak compared to previous years, but so much of it holds up today. I miss pop music.
