On DOOL Nurse Lori was introduced so that the Salem Strangler's victims would be known to the audience.

Eric,Lemay was on TD for only a few months so never had the chance to make any impact.

Didn't the Ice Princess/the island story happen during the writer's strike, when Gloria was dictating story.I have a feeling that is how Thom Racina came to soaps.

From Thom Racina's web page

In 1980, I think, Gloria Monty, the legendary producer of GENERAL HOSPITAL, was scared. A writer's strike was imminent and her head writer had started something called the "Ice Princess" story with a formula in it, but not much more than that. If the writers stuck, the story would go to the picket lines with them. Up to that time, I'd done a few episodes of FAMILY, the prime time Sada Thompson show that I thought was a class act, and some scripts for SEARCH FOR TOMORROW. But I was a novelist, and Jackie Smith at ABC put me together with Gloria to see if I could help generate story for the coming year or so. At dinner, I showed Gloria my novel, THE GREAT LOS ANGELES BLIZZARD, which Erwin Allen had optioned but dropped, and for the hell of it said why don't we do this? She lit up, and it became the Ice Princess story that aired, where Mikos Cassadine tried to freeze Port Charles in the summer, the first sci-fi for daytime with the highest ratings to match. I wrote a long story, sold it to them just before the strike, they miraculously did it as we marched around the studio, but when it was over I was suddenly writing the show. I did it for three years, and it was a heady time–we were on the covers of Newsweek, People, college classes were scheduled around us, and we changed the face of daytime forever.

FrenchFan, love these as always.

Regarding ‘The Doctors,’ there were another pair of writers for December. Saynotoursoap posted the Christmas 1981 episode and it is credited to Ann Marie Barlow and Aaron Scott were the writers.

In reference to ‘Search for Tomorrow,’ I’ve been looking at the 1980 synopses for the series. It seems like the tail end of the Corringtons reign you had the start of some darker stuff. The Sentells were involved with a terrorist plot. Beau Mitchell opened a gambling operation which set in motion a string of corruption plots involving minor characters like Don McKay, D.A. Matthews, and Jim Ramsey. The difference is the latter half of 1980 seems to be balanced with more romantic / familiar plots involving a lot of long time characters who were written out in 1981.

In terms of ‘Ryan’s Hope,’ I remember Rose being mentioned in the fall of 1981 after the strike ended. I think they had to deal with it because Matthew was still around.

Originally, Gary Tomlin and Michelle Lisanti Poteet planned on revealing Stuart Whyland was the serial killer, but that changed when Pat Falken Smith took over.

Back to ‘The Doctors,’ I think Lemay was around until May / June 1982 when Barbara Morgenroth arrived with either Robert Cendella or Leonard Kantor. It was stated in SOD that Cendella was supposed to write with Morgenroth, but I haven’t seen it confirmed anywhere else. Elizabeth Levin stated in 1983 or 1984 in an interview about her play that she had left ‘The Doctors’ abruptly over an argument about changes made to a script. I think Elizabeth Levin only wrote ‘The Doctors’ briefly during her 1981 return. EDIT: The March 1982 episode from saynotoursoap is credited to Harding Lemay.

The final years of 'The Doctors' was rather turbulent behind the screen. I was reading today Doris Quinlan was fired by NBC because of the writers she planned on hiring. The article stated NBC bought the show from the production company to gain more control and drop Quinlan.

It's interesting, the AW recaps about this woman Anne. I never knew any of this about her, that she was pursued by Jamie, how close she was to Mac. Who was this Melissa woman? I also never knew about this man Tom - I assume he was secretly working with Mitch to kidnap Matthew (I think that story is coming up). It's a little strange to me that Ada suddenly became a social worker. I think Ada would say, "Leave that to the people with books for brains," and just continue dishing out advice from her kitchen.

I never knew any of this about Melanie and her friend and the dead man either. It seems like some of the heavier psychological stories on AMC at this time, they gave to the smaller time characters (like the wife-beating story with Leora Sanders).

It is hard to keep track of AW's characters and stories at that time.

Anne ended up having depression. She was out by May.

Melissa was a friend of Sandy's from his Las Vegas days. The actress was the mother of Kirsten Vigard who played Morgan on GL.

The Melanie story was a short term thing when Carol Burnett was signed to play her mom but had to pull out due to her husband's heart attack. Gwen Verdon took over.

I'm sorry about the heart attack but I'm glad Carol went on to another role. I can't see Melanie's mother returning over and over to the end of the show.

I wonder why Jamie would even include a chapter on some girl from Las Vegas.

What was it with AW and showgirls and showbiz types in the early 80's? Jerry Grove's poor mother was an ex-showgirl. I guess that's the main reason they kept Jason around for so long. It's a little odd how long he hung around, compared to most other new faces at that time.
