The idea of remaking this is horrible to me.

The original is a classic. You can't duplicate the magic that those ladies created. It's once in a lifetime.

Epic Fail.

The very same thing I feel about Rob Zombie's Halloween.

Hi, Shawn.

Hey Roman! :) Long time no post!

And you know I love that remake. ;)

Yeah it's gimmicky, but it's Lifetime, not a motion picture movie. So I say go for it, and cast it with all well-known peeps. Gotta see such gems like Phylicia Rashad, Robin Givens, and Jasmine Guy. Debbi Morgan would be a nice soapy bonus too.

I'm a big believer in the idea that a truly well-written, universal piece and can be adapted a million different ways. Personally I would prefer a truly multicultural version but when your dealing with a beauty shop as a main set that becomes problematic. An ebony version will probably pay off quite nicely on cable and could lead to another run on Broadway or LA and give some good actresses a chance to work.

I could see:

Alfre Woodard or Angela Basset or Valerie Pettiford or Sonja Sohn as M'Lynn

Loretta Devine, Jenifer Lewis or Whitney Houston as Truvy

Renee Goldsberry, Sanaa Lathan, Keri Washington, Lisa Bonet for Annelle

For Ouiser and Clairee there are plenty of the old guard to choose from,it would be a matter of health and availability and how old they wanted to make that rivalry: Leslie Uggams and Cicely Tyson? Viola Davis and Whoopi Goldberg

For Shelby: I'd suggest Anika Noni Rose although she's pushing the limit on age. Paula Patton and Tessa Thompson would be good too. So would Shannon Kane

I'm surprised there has been criticism of this project. If one is to apply the same sort of "logic" to this movie as is applied to Obama, then anyone who doesn't fully support it is a "racist."

Queen Latifah, Alfre Woodard & Phylicia Rashad to star

Queen Latifah is the false note to me, not the right age and I just don't see her pulling off M'Lynn's vulnerability. Lynn Whitfield would have been superb as M'Lynn. I also would have loved to see Angela Bassett play Truvy, casting against type, but I know Bassett would soar with it.

I just don't get why a remake is even necessary or needed and it's not about being racist before anyone says it.

If it's not broke, then leave it alone, Hollywood needs to remember that

What??

When I saw Queen's name I automatically assumed she'd be playing Truvy since she seems best suited for that sassy role, plus her most recent connection to Dolly in that movie.

Alfre is more of a M'Lynn than Queen. Debbi Morgan and Shannon Kane would have been a great M'Lynn and Shelby. Rosemary Prinz was the original M'Lynn on stage.

In the '60s and '70s, there were tons of all-black productions of classic pieces and there's been a tiny resurgence of that, most notably with the all-star black productions of Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Streetcar which is about to open. I think Tyler Perry is following suit on screen. There was a Broadway revival of Steel Magnolias a few years back with Delta Burke as Truvvy, Christine Ebersole as M'Lynn, Rebecca Gayheart as Shelby, Marsha Mason as Ouiser, et cetera, I'm not sure if it did so well.

I confess I absolutely love Steel Magnolias. I cry every damn time Merline breaks down at Shelby's grave. What a wonderful movie, a tribute to women who hold their families and friends together with all their strength.

I am open to the remake and if Loretta Devine is cast in the move, I am so there.

I don't believe this movie needed to be made.

It's sad that in 2012, people still feel the need to have a "black" version of a "white" movie. There's a suggestion that women of different races are incapable of having the same types of human emotions.

What's next, the multracial version?

For f' sake, keep the politics and your wacky political views on the politics thread. No need to spread that crap all over the rest of the boards.
