People in the Soap Industry You Feel Sorry For

Kelly Monaco- I know she's a Frons fave, but I can't help feeling sorry for her. It's not her fault Frons hates Liz/Rebecca Herbst.

Y&R hairstylist- Getting blamed for Amelie Henlie's hairstyle choices.

Any actor who is playing a good character today. I don't mean anti-hero/heroine, but a genuine good guy. If your character does anything wrong he/she gets labeled a hypocrite and if they don't do anything wrong they're labeled boring.

I feel sorry for Renee Elise Goldsberry, one of OLTL's most capable actresses to have come along in a long time, and they didn't even try to come to an agreement with her and just let her limp off screen...and yet they will try their damnedest to align the earth, sun, and stars for people like Michael Easton.

After saying that, I feel sorry for YOU because you are going to get a world of hate. LOL!

Barbara Berjer, abruptly fired from 3 P&G soaps, the most disgusting being her AW exit, where her delightful character was given a stroke, then killed off in a disgusting plug-pulling story.

They are always hating on REG, I don't care...I'm used to it tongue.png . I should have added something about Tangeline for good measure haha!

I had my issues with the Pauline character during her last couple of years on the show, but I always thought Wendy Richard was treated horribly by TPTB at EastEnders towards the end of her run. Pauline was killed off in the most humiliating way, and even at the character's funeral (which should have been a huge event for the show, but wasn't), they still found a way to make a mockery of her.

I do think Pauline was essential to the foundation and grain of EastEnders, and without her, the show wouldn't have been the same. It's even more sad that Wendy died not long after her exit.

Brenda Benet, who it is said was forced to act out a story that was too close to her own personal tragedies and eventually wound up killing herself.

Michael Zaslow

Genie Francis. I know this is out of left field, but after that story where Monty said she didn't care if Francis died from her drug habit because Geary was the show, and how she tried to carry on her career but ABC killed her LOVING character to coerce her back to GH only to run into abuse about weight and an unfair sexist double standard that prompted her to quit again, I feel sorry for her. Although she has a happy home life it seems.

Phil Carey and Anna Lee for both being discarded so close to the end

Andrea Evans who was forced to run away from her show because of a stalker

The two guys from OLTL who got fired and blamed for declining ratings because they played gay characters

Melody Thomas-Scott for being treated like dirt on a show she helped make #1

all the old ladies who watched GL, ATWT and all the other P&G soaps for decades and whose voice doesn't count for the networks

I feel sorry for most of the vets at Y&R, who are slowly seeing their airtime get snatched from them by New non acting young folks, stars from other soaps and now American Idol contestants.

I feel Bad for Kimberlin Brown. The writers have officially made a mockery out of the Sheila Carter character by adding all these very unnecessary history changes and creating Sara Smythe, and all Kimberlin was trying to do was recover from a car accident, preventing her to come to Y&R when they wanted her for what would become the Pheila story.

I feel bad for Bill Bell (RIP) on how his family members just keep dismantling his soaps.

And because this might be true.... I KIND OF feel bad for MAB for probably thinking (like Frons) that she is doing everything right for the show.

  • Member

Supposedly MAB is rarely even involved with Y&R.

I heard that too... and its because she is too busy going to all these celebrity events looking for new characters :D

I feel sorry for Eileen Fulton. I was never a Lisa fan (or EF fan, for that matter), but her contribution to the history of ATWT is indisputable. She was daytime's first bitch, paving the way for Robin Strasser's Rachel Davis, Susan Lucci's Erica Kane and countless others. She was so popular that she was spun off into her own prime-time show Our Private World. And what was her thanks when ATWT ended after 54 years? Two throwaway lines in the last episode. To treat someone so important to the history of the show in such a thoughtless manner is beyond contemptible. There's a special place in hell for Chris Goutman.

Too true about Eileen Fulton :(

I also have to add AW letting Aunt Liz - one of their best characters - fade into oblivion. Poor Irene Dailey.

And Lisa Brown's material in her GL return. Yikes.

I feel sorry for ANOTHER WORLD's final cast. They worked their a$$es off to make a(nother) miracle happen. :(

And I feel sorry for Christopher Goutman. If he had taken the time to get to know some Internet fans, once he weeded out the crazies, he would've found an abundant number of passionate, educated and genuine people who know their [!@#$%^&*].

*Harding Lemay--Given that Lemay took AW to new ratings (and creative) heights, it was a complete travesty for Mr. Lemay's own soap--Lovers and Friends--to be taken off the air after only three months, only to then be retooled as For Richer, For Poorer (which would last another mere nine months). What is beyond comprehension is that NBC gave virtually zero support to Lemay's soap(s), while they gave such intense support to Passions. (And regarless of JERs achievements, Lemay did more for NBC Daytime than JER did.)

I agree, and Lovers and Friends is a soap I'd kill to see, but it does seem that by that point Lemay was already burning out and losing some interest. He doesn't talk much about it in 8 Years in Another World, but that's just the impression I get, and that Tom King doing FRFP, didn't really seem to be an issue for Lemay. yes it deserved more of a chance, but...

*JER--Just to be clear, I hated JER (and still do), because I believe that he more than anyone else caused so much damage to the industry. However, no matter what sins he committed, it is incredibly sad that he died at the age of 60. I personally see JER as a tragic figure: he initially accomplished great success, but then (largely as the result of carelessness and ego) had a string of spectacular failures. Given that his death came so soon after Passions' demise, he no doubt died a completely broken man.

I've never liked hi writing much, but I see your point. he also seemed a conflicted man with some serious issues (though that's conjecture on my part--he did seem to be very conflicted between his possible sexuality and his strong religious beliefs--which manifested themselves in some particularly weird stories on Passions.

*Brian Frons--Personally, I will be shocked if anybody else feels sorry for Frons, but I do. While he is undoubtedly very incompetent and egotistical, I feel the executives at P&G were even worse (but they are not vilified anywhere near the extent Frons is, because the P&G soap fans are so quiet). Also, I believe that Frons was made the fallguy by the higher-ups at ABC (who actually made the decision to cancel AMC and OLTL, as opposed to Frons). Furthermore, I sometimes read these conspiracy theories that it was Frons' goal all along to destroy the ABC soaps; such theories are absurd because Frons is just not competent enough to pull off such a scheme. When it comes to Frons, I really believe that he felt all his ideas were excellent (which is not a stretch for one to think, given his ego) and would be exactly what the viewers would want to see.

I kinda agree, actually. I think he truly felt, at least at some point, that he was doing his best for the genre, and unlike the P&G heads, you couldn't say he was apathetic about soaps. It's too bad he was so inept, and really doesn't seem to know how stupid many of his comments, not to mention actions, were...

I felt sorry for Ed Scott at DAYS, who's attempts at making that soap rise above mediocrity was hindered by two incompetent Head Writers and an incompetent boss as well. Hopefully Noel Maxam won't have the same problem as well.
