I'm not sure why parts of this thread turns into a fight week after week. Exactly who is being helped when you guys argue? Let someone have a differing opinion than yours and don't hide behind snide comments. Remember, only the posters of this forum dissect ratings this much and no one else besides the #'s crunchers at the networks/studios. They fight to sell ad space, you fight to ?

If you scroll back Toups asked for HELP determining the last time OLTL was #1 alone in 18-34 demos. We went back over the last time OLTL had big spikes, Todd's execution, Dan's gay reveal, etc, and that's how November 2000 came into the discussion.

This thread was pretty respectful and on topic, discussing RATINGS, until someone jumped in SOLELY to attack a fellow poster.

Anyhoo, it is interesting to discuss the bigger picture out there going on in network TV, etc. As this is not an OLTL tribute thread.

I read what Toups wrote and I have no problem with that.. I stand by what I said. The ratings are what they are.Whatever show is on top at any given time. Good for them. As for anyone attacking you, that has nothing to do with me.

I don't get the non-sequitur. No one thinks this is a OLTL tribute thread.

What's interesting, and probably irrelevant in the grander scheme of this all, is that a lot of OLTL's viewer's surge is coming from Male viewers... if you look, they actually went up 54,000 male viewers last week while losing 60,000+ viewers overall. That means the show lost +110,000 female viewers overall but made up for the loss by gaining male viewers. They are also up 133,000 male viewers over last year (more than any other soap and about the same increase as GH, AMC, & Days combined). For years, I've noticed that OLTL has always been in last place (or close to it) with male viewers and always wondered why...

Just an interesting note.

Also, with over 500,000 male viewers watching OLTL (and with Y&R closer to 1 million) you would think that there must be some advertisers that would want to target these groups- not to generalize, but I find that most male viewers of soap operas tend to be gay- and this group have many of the same spending tendencies as women. In my experience anyway...

BLESS YOU!

For trying to get this thread back on topic and back to analyzing the NUMBERS.

I think that's a great point that OLTL has been gaining in male viewers.

I don't know about the gay generalization though. My experience is those who take the time to post on message boards and are really engaged tend to be gay. But a lot of older male viewers don't post but watch. I know one male who is straight and ready to retire. They been watching ABC soaps for decades in his firehouse. It's often background noise unless there is a juicy story going on and then he laughs they are glued to their sets. He prefers AMC to OLTL though. He's a big Erica fan. That's my anecdotal evidence.

I would agree that the vast majority of males are older (regardless of orientation). If you look at CBS' ratings (and shows like ATWT), they tended to have lower HH ratings but MORE viewers. The obvious interpretation is that older couples tended to watch together - like my parents. The Pharma companies know this, that's why they targeted soaps. These viewers do not watch The Talk or the upcoming shows on ABC. One other point, as CBS started dropping shows, the show that preceded showed a drop. I'm convinced that B&B has suffered ever since ATWT was gone. Remember in more than 50% of the country, it follows news, not Y&R. ATWT had a following and B&B definitely gained from early tune in or when people want to watch a block of soaps together. GL a little less impact since it had that split airing between morning and afternoon. Anyway, the real culprits are the companies that produce them P&G wanted out and so did ABC. (It was clear when ABC announced that SoapNet would flip to Disney Kids a couple of years ago, that they were going to cancel some shows because that was what made them somewhat profitable.) It's so frustrating to see when viewers get what they want, they come back. I'm glad OLTL is having this surge. I hope they keep it up to the end.

Male viewers are key for HH rating. I remember the drop when male viewers stopped watching ATWT. The show always did well when they came in at 4th place in the male demo but that was over for the final two years.

Oddly, both OLTL and ATWT lost male viewers while doing gay storylines. The whole 'majority of male soap fans are gay' stuff is myth and sterotype. Str8 men have always watched soaps. I know they called OLTL the 'thinking man's soap' in the 1970s. Certainly a lot of gay guys like soaps; however, manyhetro night workers and retired men tune in. Most of the str8 guys do avoid posting on SON, tho ;)

BTW - Expect to see drops in overall viewers and demos. Nielsen did a major readjustment of markets - several big markets lost 100,000+ HH, including NY, LA and Atlanta, and what each rating point is worth. I'm sure some of it was related to census. There are 5 million fewer viewers in Nielsen's universe now. Last year W 18-49 a rating point was worth 659,700 viewers, now it's 640,000. So don't be surprised when ratings are released next week. Remember Labor Day will delay.) You can see full details at tvbythenumbers.com. (I can proudly say that I alerted them to the market changes, which were quite stunning that Nielsen was off by so much.)

In the loving arms of his wife, Dr. Marlena Evans, John took his last breath at the end of the June 2 episode, after suffering devastating internal injuries during a lab explosion. The iconic character went out as he lived — a hero. Sensing the fans’ devastation on Monday, Marlena’s portrayer Deidre Hall posted this simple-but-powerful message to fans on Instagram: “I know. I know. Hardest day ever.”

    • Now coming into June...well...   I knew it was coming but I didn't like the start to the next round of Dani/Bill/Hayley. As the 3 A plots from the start of the show (The SilkPress storyline and Martin's Secret being the other two), it needed to be benched for a while to develop those characters and allow other characters and storylines to grow. 3 months in, Hayley is the weak link, Dani is still divisive, but not boring, and Bill has been making his mark with some plots faster than others. So last week seeing the story starting to loop back around to them with Hayley's potential pregnancy, I honestly had mixed feelings.   I get it. The SilkPress storyline is currently in aftermath/next turn mode, so it has to be moved into a C plot position. Moreso if we want to keep the very talented Miss Trish around. And I love how clever the writers are being with the storyline. They give us enough in the episodes and are still playing out beats to keep the appetite fed. I don't feel like anyone is being dumbed down to keep her around. And Trish is giving nuances in her alone scenes with NuTed. I shouldn't care for a clear psycho, but she be selling it. That said...I wish they had given us a little more of the Martin's Secret storyline in the last week of the month though I loved the game of cat and mouse Bill did on Martin and Smitty to keep the storyline alive and active after it had a nice build beginning of May and vanished for a week mid-May. And it appears like it's about to go back to the backburner as an A plot which of course leaves the A plot of Dani/Bill/Hayley.   I am probably in the minority as someone who is not anti-Dani here and even she annoyed the heck out of me last week. In character true, but I just felt like there was a way to get all of that across without it feeling like...as I've said before...one step forward, two steps back...and have it feel organic. I liked Hayley got a little bit of edge with her, but she still ain't no match for Dani. And it reminds to be seen if we should be going back to that well of a story yet.   Now about today's show...   And I thought Tracy was bad! lol. But YES. Sharon has been worth the wait. And so has Anita's story! Finally having TT in the limelight. This has been a nice slow burn for me and a nice B plot. And the actress is good. The wig is giving. And her holding what Anita's secret is over her head and threatening to tell Vernon....Ooooo...that is what I was waiting for.    And speaking of bad...I thought Eva vs Kat was a great rivalry. But I am loving the rivalry that is growing with 'Nancy Drew' and Silk Press Sheila! They both get good licks in and are so cunning with each other. And I definitely have liked that since the anniversary party, that it has been growing. Now that Kat has been proven right, she has not backed down. And neither has SilkPress. And we got a 'Ms. B@tch' moment, too? LOVE. Eva coming up with a trump card was delicious and so 90s Sami Brady. GOOD. And the coda with Jacob and the expert...YES. The Silk Press storyline has been the best paced on the show so I love that the aftermath of the anniversary party continues to be so...barring one flaw...well for me. Not enough Nicole's POV.   And I like the C plots on display. And by that, I mean Chelsea with Vernon. And it made me wonder what the writers have plan for her love life now that the throuple is over with. I was watching her and going awww.   And of course the mystery man around Martin. I am starting to wonder if he really even works at the country club given how he made a run for it. That would be a twist.    Speaking of Martin...good to see him in scenes with his father and mother.    I'm getting used to NuTed.    I felt the last episode of May was a bit of a letdown, but this was a very nice recovery.
    • Unless they cut him, I'd think he would stay. Surely, he didn't choose to return because he expected high quality. I figure he gets to work when he wants and spend a lot of time doing his own thing and being with his family.
    • The writing for Liz and Lucky is indeed terrible, but if JJ signed a one-year contract he may be gone in a couple of months anyway. Perhaps they’re just cutting their losses.
    • That would be his older sister Stacey. She was the center of a big story back in the day. Nola was out to snag medical student Kelly Nelson, who she thought would provide her with the life she craved. He was in love with a girl named Morgan. Nola plotted to get pregnant by him, but couldn't manage to get him in bed. So she seduced Floyd, who thought she was in love with him. When she knew she was pregnant, she got Kelly drunk and made sure he woke up next to her in bed. Kelly believed her when she told him he made her pregnant. They were about to elope to Las Vegas, but her mother ratted her out and Kelly abandoned her. She almost married Floyd, but jilted him at the altar. She went to work for Quint. When the baby came prematurely, Kelly saved both of them. She named the baby Kelly Louise to irk Morgan, who was now married to Kelly. When she fell in love with Quint, she had a change of heart over all the trouble she had caused, so she changed the baby's name to Anastasia Louise, shortened to Stacey. Quint was a devoted stepfather and Henry treated her like his own granddaughter.  After Quint and Nola leave SF, I believe Stacey is never seen again. Which is odd, you would think they would have brought her back with Nola and J, but they never did.
