NIELSEN RATINGS SPOT CHECK:

While we are waiting for the arrival of 1974, I have some good news for ratings fans! We now have a small amount of ratings info for the first few weeks of each year from 1965-1974. This will provide a good spot check as to how all the daytime shows were doing at the beginning of each year. Only the ratings, shares and full preemption data is available for now. No stations, percentage covered or partial preemption info, but at least it's something to enjoy until the full 1974 data shows up! I will post each year from 1965-1974 backwards, starting with 1974:

@JAS0N47 Thank you! Early Xmas gift.

Interesting to see How to Survive A Marriage ahead of Y&R.

Y&R had been on air for almost a year but was still among the bottom soaps along with Secret Storm(about to be cancelled) and perennial also-rans Love of Life and Somerset.

Meanwhile HTSAM had a choice timeslot following AW and debuted with better numbers than its' predecessor Return to Peyton Place.

At the time it would seem that HTSAM would continue to build and Y&R might struggle but the opposite occurred.

From what little data I've seen from 1974, I think they spend the next few months with similar ratings. It would seem Y&R starts building more in the summer of 1974. While HTSAM stagnates.

But will be interesting to see how it played out, once more of 1974 eventually comes in next year.

As The World Turns @#1.

Jan 73 was a year into Irna Phillips return as headwriter. A lot of reports from that time say Irna brought the ratings down with some not well received stories so it will be interesting when we get the rest of 73 as she was fired later that year.

Game shows were really having their moment. 5 of the Top 10. They would have been even cheaper than soaps to produce but I guess the demos might not have been as desirable? and viewers not as loyal?

    • I wonder if Falcon Crest wasn't seen as macho enough for them.  I first saw Dynasty on FX around 1994 or 1995. I think it ran for a few years, although I may be off as I moved and lost the channel for a while.
    • -- The fact that we know the mess that Billy made when he renovated the Chancellor place makes his entire sadsack attitude pathetic. I wanted someone to smack the hell out of him. -- And why did Diane care so much about Billy's opinion beyond hearing he liked it better before? Why continue pressing him on it? Josh Griffith clearly thinks this is a storyline, and it isn't. It never was. -- So Mariah cheated on Tessa offscreen. OF COURSE it was offscreen. Then we got this ridiculous, convoluted explanation of why she cheated, ending in her announcement that she doesn't have any character at all. GMAFB.  -- Now we'll get the cliche garbage of Mariah confessing to Tessa, who turns to Daniel for sex even though she's a lesbian. (Please spare me the comment that Tessa is bi.) -- The excuse for Summer leaving town? Also pathetic. Why in the hell would she have to leave town to find a new creative director for Marchetti?
    • I vaguely recall it surfaced on either TNT or TBS around 1993 or so but I could be wrong about the channel. By 1997 when this article was written Knots was still airing on TNT, Dallas was on the old TNN network (which today is Paramount), and Dynasty was on…well I don’t even recall now but feel like it was either E!  or Bravo. TNN ran Dukes of Hazzard and Dallas together in the evenings for years surprised they didn’t just pick up FC to resurrect the trifecta.
    • I think you're thinking of the dress she wore on April 15 from her Ebony cover shoot when Andre had to put her in bed.
    • @Maximthank you for such a thoughtful reply. I have printed it out so I have it with me as I watch most of the soap clips on the YT app on my TV. I've always wanted to get into Edge of Night, but I didn't no where to start.
    • Laugh-In was also before my time, but I loved watching her when Nick at Nite and TV Land ran repeats. She was also on Sesame Street for years. So vibrant. One of those people I've never heard bad word of. Sorry to hear that.
    • Amazing resource. Thank you! I'm pretty confident that she's worn it before. I'll look into it. That or I'm having some serious deja vu.
    • Other than Soapnet I am trying to remember if I ever even saw it in syndication. I know I saw Dallas, Knots and Dynasty in syndication before Soapnet.
