Thanks for this!  I never thought about the fact that around the same time ABC Daytime obviously made a point of hiring outside the soap world for exec producers (Felicia Minei Behr was doing fine at AMC.)  Gottlieb was the highest profile one, but Loving hired Haidee Granger from the BBC (who Logan thinks shows promise--but would have a falling out with headwriter Addie Walsh, serve as HW herself for three months, hire Millee Taggert and Bob Guza, and then get fired by ABC) and for GH they took TV movie producer Wendy Riche who Logan doesn't think shows much promise, but of course... would (mostly.)

However, Gottlieb seemed to be the only one to immediately hire a headwriter from outside the soap world as well.

(But what was the S&M sex?)

No kidding.  As the soaps dwindle down to barely existing they have seemingly just given up on bothering to look for outside talent.

I found a bit about the homophobia storyline and AIDS storyline on OLTL. They cite a soap opera now article that indicates that homophobia might have been the reason for the lack of Emmy nominations for the show. They don't explain what SON said and I doubt I will ever find any access to Soap Opera Now archives.

OLTL scored only three Daytime Emmy nods (and no wins) in 1993: Robert S. Woods, Thom Christopher, and Tonja Walker. The show did much better in 1994, with five nods and four wins: Robert S. Woods (the also-ran), Hillary B. Smith, Susan Haskell, Roger Howarth, and the writing team. I guess it took time for the voters to come around to Gottlieb-Malone.

It's still amazing to me that they did not get nominated in 1994 when they had those four wins. It always felt like OLTL was treated as an afterthought by ABC and the Emmy nominators.

I have every Soap Opera Now issue. SON had biases. It was an interesting publication. They pushed their agenda and who they wanted to spotlight.

Do you think if OLTL was on today, they'd do a conservatory story with Viki?

I mean, after the DID, going back in time, and hiding out in a diner in Texas; don't you think someone from the board at Lord/Manning would suggest that Natalie get a court appointed financial conservator for her mother?

It would be an interesting storyline, but I wouldn't trust Ron Carlivati to tell it. Which OLTL writer would be able to?

Can anyone help me out? I'm looking for recaps of the 1991 episodes of OLTL.  Thanks in advance if you can help.

Looking at the big picture, in what sense did Another World influence this show? Many of the same people, from writers, actors, and executive producers, worked on both shows, usually working first on AW. What impact did that have on OLTL? Did they try to make OLTL a little like AW, consciously or unconsciously? Could OLTL have been seen at some points as just AW but on ABC?
