Richard Hatch, who originated the role of Phil Brent, has passed away.

Obviously, he is best known for Battlestar Galactica, but because we are so fortunate to have so many episodes and clips from AMC's first two years (he played Phil from 1970 to 1972) available to us, I will always remember him for his portrayal of the young, naive, sensitive Phil.

To me, Hatch was the only "real" Phil. He was so endearing, so earnest, so wholesome. I adored him. None of the character's best features were evident in his replacement's portrayal, alas. Nick Benedict was a hunk and a half back then, and looked great in tight jeans (LOL), but he just wasn't Phil. Even Karen Gorney said as much!

n the paper today, I read that the actress who plays
Liza will be leaving AMC to be on a brand new soap on
NBC.  Boy, first Jenny, now Liza.  My suspicion that
Tony and Liza might hit it off is shot.  My NEW
theory is that Tony will kill Liza, thinking it was
Jenny, and that Jenny will still go to N.Y.

In addition, we`re going to get a new Nina.  The
actress who plays her (sorry I`m bad on real names)
is leaving the show.  Rather than kill HER off,
she will be replaced.

Lastly, according to the paper, we`ll find out Friday
what really is in the West Wing of the Chandler mansion.

So I get that the network mandated that Ryan and Greenlee were to be a couple...but it takes a talented writer to make that mandate make sense.

I think of all the headwriters that were forced to follow that mandate...Lorrain Broderick did the best job with writing to that.  All other writers wrote it as if the two were destined to be together...but lorraine wrote the coupling in a way that made sense.  To show that they both had lost a spouse (the loves of their life) and that they each knew ehat the other was feeling.  And having both Gillian and Leo return for brief cameos...and seeing how much Ryan and greenlee missed them really drove that point across.

This is the best example of how to make a mandate from the network make sense...imho
