I'm halfway through the second episode right now, and both of these are good, important episodes from this era. The first one has, as far as I know, the only scenes we've seen that deal with Amy's anti-war protests, and I'm surprised at how much the discussion is on how negative/unsupportive Charles is about it rather than Phoebe. The second one is from June 1970 and has Phil confronting Amy after he's learned the truth about his parentage as well as Erica and Jeff's first meeting.

Rosemary Prinz is such a wonderful actress. Those scenes with Phil and Amy are tough to take - just the right type of soap performance. I wish they had found a way to bring Amy back sometime before they killed Nick off, even for a visit. Or even after Nick was killed, to meet Charlie. 

So rare to get the screaming and wailing we get from Ruth late in the second episode too. I sometimes think the show made Ruth too stoic later on.

Joe looks oddly different with that side part.

You're welcome! It's not often I'm able to turn everyone's attention to a rare find, so when I saw them, I knew I had to run over here and share.

I'm assuming you mean Amy coming back before Phil was killed off? I totally agree. I think it's one of the great missed opportunities that we never saw her again, and she really could have returned for a visit or two at any point during the show's run since Joe and Ruth were never totally gone. She would have fit in well for the 25th and 35th anniversaries.

I love early Joe Martin so much. He really was the mild-mannered leading man around whom so much of the show was centered. Once he and Ruth were married, he moved firmly into the wise old talk-to character for his kids, grandkids, and everyone else, but I wonder what things would have been like had he'd been written more like Bob Hughes and not settled down until 20-25 years into the show's run.

The highlight for me is really the Tara/Jeff/Chuck/Erica scene. Susan nailed that character immediately. You can watch this scene from 1970 and watch an Erica scene from 2010, and it makes perfect sense that that's what she became over 40 years.

Fingers crossed at this point for anything - and I mean anything at all - from 1971-1975. Preferably in color but I'll take a hundred kinescopes if that's what we get. I want some Margo!!

Thanks. I was probably thinking of Nick Benedict as he was the second Phil.

I wonder if Rosemary was ever asked. I know there's something poignant in Amy just leaving and never returning but there was good material left unmined for a future appearance.

I do hope there's more out there. I know there were a few episodes Rosemary Prinz may have had (unless these were the episodes). And yes anything in color would pop after so many kinescopes - I think we've only ever seen a minute or two, in Ann's boutique.

Seeing that the second episode aired Wednesday, June 3, 1970, I wonder if that means that the Friday cliffhanger for May 29 was Phil's discovery.

Ann: "Linc, may I ask you a blunt question?"

Linc: "Yes?"

Ann: "Do you think we are absolutely the wrong actors for these roles?"

Khan: "YES!"

Oh, and that poor lady who was playing Grandma Kate (Kate Harrington?).  She was struggling so much in her scene with Ray MacDonnell, it almost was too painful to watch.

And that might be the first glimpse I've ever had of THE BEST OF EVERYTHING.

Thanks, @All My Shadows, for letting us know about these uploads.  Gosh, to have such a nice, clear picture of Susan Lucci in action as Erica so early in AMC's run.  The camera absolutely loved that woman right from the start.

That same channel has two other early 1970 episodes. For all the Ruth Warrick fans, this one has Phoebe.

I finished the other episode. Now, granted, I'm watching with the benefit of hindsight, but I assume the audience knew that sooner or later, Joe & Ruth were going to leave the friend zone.

I watched live back in those days but I was only 12 years old with no internet or soap mags, just an older sister to discuss with.   I really didn't know about soap tropes and couldn't see anvils.

But now of course, watching both episode clips, it's totally obvious that Ms. Nixon must have planned this.  Even though both Joe and Ruth were married to others at the time.

I remember it was considered somewhat unusual that Phil and Tara were dating, and meanwhile they had each lost a parent, and then later his mom and her dad got married.

I don't remember when Ruth's husband was supposed to have died. I could've sworn I recalled seeing him in the early episodes and then didn't he die a few months in? It was obvious Joe and Ruth was always the plan. I thought Joe started on the show a widower.

He did.  IIRC, Joe's first wife was named Helen (?).

I laughed when Bootleg Grandma Kate mentioned Bobby out playing basketball with the Boy Scouts.  No wonder the Martins forgot his existence; the poor boy was hardly ever home, lol.

Oh yeah I meant to say that!  I yelled out loud when watching: "Bobby mention!!!!"
