It's an interesting issue.  Around the time of Nina Courtland's first wedding, Phoebe English (I forget if that was her maiden name or if Brooke was her maternal niece) Tyler Matthews Wallingford had banned Erica from most social events due to her mother Mona's relationship with Phoebe's ex-husband Dr. Charles Tyler.  Erica was explicitly banned from the country club, nor was she welcome in the yacht club.  This was one of Erica's motivations for moving to New York that summer, because her prospects in Pine Valley were sparse.  Phoebe, (who was Palmer's next door neighbor), also expressed that she would not attend Nina's wedding if Erica was invited.  However, perhaps due to her association with the Kingsleys and the Bogarts, Palmer relented and Erica attended the wedding.

Years later the animus between Erica and Phoebe was mostly forgotten and the relationship with Palmer was always cordial but never close; maybe because she never got involved with any of his relatives.

Here is one of the earlier interactions.  From what I can infer, Erica and Palmer started out as business partners as they launched Erica Kane Cosmetics.

I would consider Palmer and Erica close.  Remember when she was looking for a "white knight" to save Enchantment?  Erica turned to Palmer for help.

Quoting you again to say that I found it! Thank you so much!! I see what you mean now - they had to plaster an instrumental of "I've Had the Time of My Life" over it when clearly this scene predated that song by about nine years.

The same montage also has a decent-length no-audio clip of Jeff proposing to Mary Kennicott that I'd never seen before. I would be satisfied if ABC didn't want to go through the trouble of streaming full episodes and chose to just do a slew of clips of this nature. Give me full episodes, but if you can't, I'll take clips.

I always thought Palmer and Erica had a more father/daughter relationship...while her friendship with Opal helped.  I didn't realize Nina and Erica were friendly..Nina was a bridesmaid at Erica's aborted prison wedding to Jeremy..plus Nina visited Erica a few times when Erica was pregnant with Bianca

I think Erica being out of town for most of the early 80s helped her maintain cordial relationships with the Cortlandts as she had no opportunities to get under their skin, especially Nina. Keeping her mostly in her own bubble during that time, while I used to think of it as a dumb thing to do for the show's most popular character, really kept her fresh and really allowed her to avoid being hated by everyone all the time. Once they put her back in the PV circle, she had new sparring partners but also had friends. I'm not sure she had many friends left in town by 1979-1980 as much as she had people just tolerating her while rolling their eyes at her.

In the episodes I'm currently watching, several months before JL's Opal appears, Erica has already reached out to Palmer for "additional capital" in creating Erica Kane Cosmetics, which would become Enchantment.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think of Erica having an animus toward Donna which may have also kept her out of Palmer's circle for awhile.

Also, did Erica's return to Pine Valley coincide with the publication of her first autobiography?  I recall a failed appearance at a parade around the time of her return and that she lived with Mona during that period (maybe due to the death of Dr. Tyler?), immediately prior to her relationship with Adam.  Did she buy her house after her divorce from Adam and prior to her marriage to Travis?  And can anyone recall the name of Erica's house?

Finally, was Nina's later friendship/bridesmaidhood with Erica due to Nina's relationship with Matt Connolly who was close with Jeremy?

I did too.

I don't know much about Erica's time in NYC but it sounds wild that she lived out of PV for a year or more? I don't know the specifics. It was brought up again recently when we discussed how she might have been a better fit for The City than Morgan Fairchild (though I liked Morgan).

She left in 1980 after closing the disco and being attracted to model for Sensuelle. I’m not sure on the specifics of when she returned, but she moved into the Chandler mansion in 1984. While she was in NYC, other characters always ran into her or visited with her while they were in the city, so she still was able to build connections with characters like Tad and Jenny, who were also trying to become models. I think Mark also spent some extended time living with her, too, which is where his drug habits started to ramp up. I want to say Mark kept her apartment for a time after she moved back to PV.

Pine Valley Bulletin has Palmer helping Erica to expose Lars Bogard’s “war criminal” past, also in 1984, which would make sense if they had become friendly shortly before her departure from PV four years earlier.

    • That's what Julie Hanan Carruthers is doing for BTG at the new studio in Atlanta, but JHC is credited.
    • I remember when the whole Missy Reeves controversy started in 2012.  She tweeted support of a business that had made homophobic statements. Greg Rikaart (who was on Y&R back then) publicly called her out on it, but was willing to reach out and speak with her. Article here: https://greginhollywood.com/greg-rikaart-talks-about-his-twitter-war-with-fellow-soap-star-melissa-reeves-over-anti-gay-chick-fil-a-73139 That being said, ten years later, on DAYS, in 2022, when they had they double wedding of Leo/CraigWesley and Gwen/Xander, Jack and Jennifer came to the wedding.  At that time, Missy Reeves was only intermittently available for DAYS. Jennifer was living "in Boston" and Cady McClain and Missy were each intermittently appearing as Jennifer, on the specific occasions when the show required a Jennifer to appear. Missy wasn't on contract and she could have said no. But she chose to appear as Jennifer for the gay wedding of Greg Rikaart's character.   So... I mean... I would assume they reached a détente behind-the-scenes. Missy still has her belief system but there's that.
    • That was one of the best grandslam finals.  Alcaraz comes all the way back down 2 sets to 0, and three match points in the 3rd set, to win it in a 5th set tie-break.  And the quality of play was excellent - so many great shots.  What a battle!
    • Indeed. I may try to watch it in full sometime, but not anytime soon... Mark played Sean Baxter for a few episodes when Courtney married Andy. Burke was either on Broadway or at OLTL at that time, I suppose.
    • Well, Josh was a horndog. LOL Yep. It was one of the first really weird things Reva did with her PPD. She became obsessed with the idea that Dylan and Sam should get married. Sam was only 17, and needed her parent's permission. Reva helped them leave town so they could go to a neighboring state where Sam was old enough. Ross, Billy and Josh stopped them, then Sam went to India to try and persaude Justin. Reva followed her and didn't tell Josh she was going. While Reva was gone, Josh advertised for nannies, and Harley applied. He ended up hiring someone else. But when Reva returned, she hired Harley because (in her weird mental state) she wanted someone she could trust with the kids (because she feared Josh was trying to get rid of her and that Vanessa wanted the children.). After Reva starts treatment, she asks Harley to stay until she's stronger because she's good with the kids. At the party, Reva starts going off the rails, insulting Justin and Josh hauls her to a private dining room to ask WTF. Reva starts confronting him about the "affair" with Vanessa, and he realizes she is weird. He locks her in the dining room and frees Mindy and Van from the ladies room (where Reva has locked them in). Van starts telling him that Reva attacked her and needs help.  Reva escapes out the window of the dining room and goes back to the party, climbs onto a table and starts a striptease. Josh gets her to stop, takes her home and after filling Ed in, decides to go to the doctor the next day. Reva then takes off and spends days running around town, coming on to a guy she thinks is Billy, Billy, Hamp, Frank and Roger.  Roger takes her to his apartment and takes nude pictures of her, which he tries to blackmail Billy with. He wants the deed to the land the Towers is on in exchange for them. (Billy had been left the deed by a sweet old lady who lost her home in the 5th street fire. Roger had stolen the deed from her before she died. After Roger took those pics of Reva, she saw him hide them, and took an envelope from the hiding place. She didn't realize she'd taken the deed and not the pictures.)  Anyway, Billy and Vanessa trick Roger into burning the pictures, claim the deed and at the Towers opening reveal that Billy owns the land and therefore the Towers. That's what led to Roger and Alex's breakup and Roger and Mindy's affair. Mark Lewis was on ATWT? 1986 is not a good year, storywise. No bueno. Muy no bueno.
    • All the time they spent trying to make viewers feel sorry for Chad only for him to not even last that long. I wonder if they knew Richard Burgi was going so quickly. You're right about Josie replacing Cheryl. On paper, this should have made sense, given all the ties Josie had to the canvas, but I did prefer Cheryl. There was something very synthetic about Alexandra Wilson.  I suppose even if she did have some fans they were just so used to getting rid of people left and right, so she was more collateral damage. As you said above I do wonder what the plans were for Peggy Lazarus. I think AWHP mentioned her once telling Peter that Peggy Lazarus wasn't her real name. Maybe she would have been another Carl moll... Rebecca Hollen never did get her due in her soap roles.
    • So true...Hackney might have had a story on FC with Richard being an old lover of his, but reveals herself to be a Cartel member and blackmails Richard with something into doing her dirty work  LOL. But of course Richard had his hands full with the double trouble sisters Ms. Jones and Ms. Braxton that season.

    • Cat herself will be a stumbling block all her own as she vowed to Chad to stay away from him, thus redeeming her of her crime morally. Classic DAYS would have them gazing longingly at each other at Doug's Place or Blondie's, while Liz is serenading the room with a song aptly chosen to represent their feelings of emotional turmoil.
    • From what I just recently watched, they were setting her up to go into future stories. She was Emmy nomination worthy in the material I saw. If some viewers did not like her, the character could have been rehabilitated after that sick storyline. It feels like they destroyed a character for fun and then tossed her to the curb. Spencer had chemistry with everyone. I'm just retroactively angry on Spencer's behalf.  You're right about how Cheryl was often forgotten and pushed aside and I would take Cheryl over Josie. I think soaps need characters like Cheryl. Characters like Josie are way too common. Josie always got on my nerves.
    • CBS was back in third place in 1994/95. That was the season CBS lost NFL broadcasting rights which also cost them several established affiliates in major media markets. 1995 CBS was sold to Westinghouse and Les Moonves arrived. 1995/96 CBS was trying to be young and cool to compete with NBC and Fox, but it was an epic failure and CBS was once again in third place.
