Can someone tell me what was Mark Consuelos doing in 2002 that they could get Kelly Ripa back for Maria's return but not him? Or were they both still on contract during this time and he was sick or something?

I believe he was temporarily recast because he was out shooting a movie.  Mateo was in the thick of a few storylines so it was impossible to write him out.  During this time, Kelly was still on contract at AMC and simultaneously doing the talk show.

I think the difference between post-soap plans from ABC and CBS is that ABC/Frons was so gung ho about how viewers wanted a "new" type of daytime that was mostly free of those moldy old soaps and game shows, characterized by "fun" and "quirky" food shows and...well whatever-the-fck The Revolution was supposed to be. CBS, on the other hand, cancelled the world's oldest soap and replaced it with the second-oldest game show (but it's cheaper) and then cancelled another soap and replaced it with a talk show that ripped off a show on another network (but it's cheaper). They played it safe.

Still, CBS Daytime has managed to cross over their stars to the other shows not in their chosen genre. You can see the Talk ladies and someone from Y&R and B&B occasionally give prizes away on LMAD and TPIR. Wayne Brady and Sheryl Underwood appeared on B&B. Of course, the hosts of the game shows and the soap stars have all been on The Talk.

As for ABC giving up the 1 PM slot, I say they should...though I can't think of anything affiliates airing would be any better. Who knows?

Some might welcome the spot for another talk show, but I figure most central time zone affiliates would slot an hour newscast there.

Or they could bring back AMC and OLTL as 30-minute soaps. I know, I know...but look, the buzz surrounding such a return would surely bring in higher ratings than anything they've had in that timeslot in a long, long while.

I actually just did some quick reading up, and it seems the show really wasn't cancelled so much as it was reformatted to focus on pandemic news. Still, I wonder how long that lasts as it was only created in response to the pandemic. They've already widened the scope to include non-pandemic news. There's no brand being built with this at alllllll.

I always thought that for all four soaps (GL, ATWT, AMC and OLTL) before cancelling them, they should have at least tried going down to 30 min. It would slash the budget and maybe make it a tighter show more appealing to viewers with less filler. Shame that either CBS nor ABC even attempted this before just pulling the plug.

I think it could have worked, since a lot of people said they don't have as much time to watch soaps (so 30 min is better than 60 min) and with tighter cast and less filler it could make for more interesting and dynamic stories.

Thanks for the tag, Carl, I love it!! Dick’s smarmy style matches up against Erica’s opportunistic vitality - I bet that was a fun arc.

It’s a damn shame that we don’t have even a tiny fragment of a scene at the disco anywhere. Though it was only on for a relatively short time, the experience drove so much of who she would be going forward.

    • Dallas peaked early, IMO. Maybe not a fair statement as I’m still making my way through the first half of its run, but I think it’s hard to argue to point that S3 into S4 was its high point. Back to Knots. Wrapping up “And Never Brought to Mind.” Greg’s introduction kinda took me by surprise. I low-key dreaded his arrival bc I know he very quickly gets to the center of the show, but even though they wasted no time connecting him with Mac, Abby, Gary, and Karen, it still feels like a gradual intro. The juxtaposition of the ending of the Chip story with the heating up Abby’s plotting is quite symbolic of the changes the show was going through. I absolutely cannot imagine Kenny and Ginger having any part in any of this. Yall, the Gary/Val piano theme that they pull out from time to time is my FAVORITE. I find myself humming it constantly.
    • Bloodshed is inevitable now. It’s another reason I’m glad Black people aren’t getting involved in these protests. As awful as this is, I keep reminding myself that 54 percent of Latino men voted for Trump. These people were put in harm’s way by members of their own communities and sometimes even members of their own families. Too many people decided to touch the stove.
    • Maybe I'm still in denial, but nothing about Neighbours' ongoing social media output gives the vibe of a show that's ending. In today's 'Roundup' video, Alan Fletcher referenced that production finishes in five weeks, but in all the show's posts the cast are as jovial and lighthearted as ever. Remarkably so for people who are about to lose their jobs.    Perhaps they're just putting a brave face on things, and I know they approached the previous axing with a positive attitude. Maybe putting an upbeat face on things is a collective way of showing potential backers that there's still life in the show? Or is it possible that they already know the show has been saved, and we'll get an announcement next month when filming wraps and the show 'rests'?   Does any of that make sense?!
    • A very good week for male eye candy on GH. New Michael is beautiful, Curtis's arms looked great in that polo shirt, Cody looks even more handsome with his new haircut AND we got Marco in swim shorts rocking his lovely bod and chest fur.

    • Yeah when Jamey Giddens did breakdowns for DAYS, he would sometimes state in tweets that specific things were his idea that he had pitched to Ron.
    • I don't, since they've clearly incorporated them into Tomas' storyline, and I happen to like his tattoos, but his jackets not fitting doesn't mean they're trying to cover his tattoos. The clothing overall isn't the issue; it's the fit. And I expect(ed) more from Jeresa Featherstone and her team. Very disappointed. He's the only male, overall, whose costume irritates me.
    • "And OMG, watching the scenes of Roger's return in comparison...the quality in the writing really nosedived. The stupid mask." Very much agreed.  Having Roger hide behind a mask for weeks/months, with it culminating with him swinging in on a vine at Blake/Phillip's wedding....geez.  So juvenile. IMO, Guiding Light never did a good job reintroducing major characters, either from the dead or elsewhere.  Masked balls = awful.  Amish = awful. When Reva was brought back from the dead, she should've just showed up in Springfield as Reva, and informed everyone that she had been gone for years because she felt like it.  She had a four-year fling with some dude who ended up dumping her due to disloyalty. Josh would be pissed and declare that their love is not *always* but *sometimes* and he'd act accordingly.  Her kids would hate her.
    • Agreed. The Emmys next year are gonna be a pretty tough competition and I hope we get a Days sweep lol  Not only does Deidre deserve a nomination for these last few weeks, but I also think Paul Telfer, Raven Bowens, Carson Boatman, Dan Feuerriegel and Alison Sweeney have good chances as well.
    • It’s not about a lack of faith and trust in MVJ, it’s about a a lack of faith and trust in Ron Carlivati, who I think can be very sneaky and manipulative when he wants to be.  And, all that “He’s just a breakdown writer” talk never changed my mind about anything, because at Days, it was “just a breakdown writer” that gave us some of the worst episodes I’ve ever seen.
