SMG should definitely come back. I think she would.

I honestly think part of it comes from the frustration of having a character shoved down our throats year in and year out played by an actress without the ability to project any depth. Like I said, Lish can be perfectly competent, and I think she would've been better served if she were playing a supporting character, like an Amanda. But to position this one-note actress into the show's lead heroine was a disastrous miscalculation on TPTB's part, and then to let her down with bad writing just compounded the whole thing. I'm fine with having a character appear in every episode. That doesn't bother me that much. But for heaven's sake, if you're going to play a character 24x7, at least hire an actress who has the ability to carry all that story and who can elevate the writing when it's weak.

Couldn't have said it better myself! The overexposure is a big reason I got turned off from one of my favourite characters... it just became too much. Alicia never ever had the acting chops to sustain the role they were carving out for her long term. More than adequate ensemble player with a lead story every once in a while.... but she never was lead actress material.

Personally I was also never ever that comfortable with Erica and Kendall becoming as close as they have..... I still think something should have happened to throw a wrench into that. I was a long time advocate of Zach and Erica having a tryst. It would have been a much better story than Ryan and Erica gallivanting around with Kendall off on some boat in the Mediterranean for most of it.

SMG's time at AMC was also a lot more exciting imo. The original s/l and the subsequent Richard Fields stuff was miss a day miss a lot, it was very entertaining stuff to watch which definitely smoothed over any shortcomings her acting may have had (and there really weren't any). I think she did very well for a kid her age. I agree that the laypore[/Corvina] stuff was dumb and her stuff with Del I've pretty much forgotten, but Erica's long lost daughter was the best Kendall s/l ever.

1993 was an exciting year for AMC and for all soaps. I think Kendall/Erica's story with both SMG and AM was one of AMC's best, not just Kendall's and SMG's first year in that story started this story and was pretty damn glorious. It was definitely terrific, can't miss drama until the story seperation. I thought the story was so dynamic for both characters. Despite the stupidness of having Erica raped at 14, and bringing on a 16 year old Kendall, I thought the age frame was perfect as Erica could damage Kendall more for adulthood, lol. I never hated either Kendall or Erica in this story. Kendall was acting out because she didn't just want but she needed the acceptance. Erica couldn't accept her because she was a constant, living reminder of the worst time of her life. They both kept on messing up with each other on the path, but you could tell there was something just underneath the surface that kept on pulling them to each other. I love how long the story went on and that it wasn't easy for them to get to love. That's what makes soaps so rich, the fact that you can play out a story like that in real time.

I feel like we need to disect the last 40 or so posts into a Kendall/SMG/AM/Erica thread? lol. Nah, it's AMC history so relevant.

We should probably move it to the tribute thread.

Would Susan Lucci bar it from happening tho? I don't think so. She doesn't seem like the type. And I never heard SMG hated working at AMC...I know she had problems with SuLu, but I never heard she hated the experience as a whole.

And I'm with you. They never gave a proper explanation of why Kendall was so eager to hurt Erica again. They made peace, and if anything, Kendall should have stepped in unexpectedly to HELP Erica. I don't know. Just another reason that AMKendall bothered me.

Hey everybody, I sincerely appreciate your outspoken support of the show - especially in light of recent events. However, I do not believe that boycotting the network is the best answer. They still are providing us actors with a wonderful job through the end of the year (almost) - and you must know that the cancellation of both of these ABC shows is most assuredly a last resort.

Would Lucci? No, but why would the network risk pissing her off in the show's final months? The two had issues which I dont think were ever resolved. They ALREADY have an actress playing Kendall. Theres no place or need for SMG to return for the finale. And I dont think SMG would return bc all her friends are gone. She was close with Eva La Rue and Sydney Penny, both of whom are gone. Most of the actresses and actors present now are people she never worked with. She'd be the odd person out and it wouldnt be like coming home.

Susan Lucy.

LMFAO. "Leeza tells us his mother has no plans to retire." It's like a fake newscast they would have made for Erica in the early 80s.

Yup, and ratings were sky high too!

Many would argue SL isn't a good actress in the true sense of the word acting. IMO, whatever AM doesn't have in chops she covers for in charisma, much like SL. She's been fine in lead and is IMO capable in lead. Was she over-exposed? Definitely, her along with Mathison, Budig, and Kaye. Bad writing in combination with over-exposure is not a good thing.

Not like she has much of a career these days...

She's got a show on CBS for the 2012-2013 season.

And I'm with you. They never gave a proper explanation of why Kendall was so eager to hurt Erica again. They made peace, and if anything, Kendall should have stepped in unexpectedly to HELP Erica.

Erica hadn't contacted her once in seven years until she needed help for Bianca. A 5 minute make-up session wouldn't be enough healing to make up for Erica not contacting her in 7 years until she needed help for Bianca, or/and Kendall being so willing to throw Erica under the bus at her first chance.

We should probably move it to the tribute thread.

LOL, I think so. I'll see what I can do. Give me 15 mintes or so.

I wouldn't be surprised if Eva LaRue came back, anyway. Not full time, obviously, but for an appearance or two. Like she did for the anniversary.

I'm sure whatever problems SuLu and SMG had are done. It was 16 years ago. Unless someone murdered someone or slept with someone's husband, what could have gone down? And I wasn't suggesting SMG play Kendall, but rather a little wink to the audience-type short scene WITH AM.

And I don't think the network cares about pissing SuLu off....Did Brian Frons not lie DIRECTLY to her face about AMc being cancelled? And make her look like an idiot when she announced it on national TV? Yeah, that ships sailed.

Not sure if this quote was posted:

"You can't cut costs enough to make up for those losses," said Brian Frons, president of daytime programming for the Disney ABC Television Group. "There comes a point when you can no longer justify the expense. Soap operas are an expensive way to program a network and unless you have General Hospital- or Young and the Restless-sized ratings, it's really not a business,"

I thought it was interesting since he seems to be claiming GH is so much better off than AMC and OLTL.

“ABC feels that the soap operas weren’t bringing in as many younger viewers as they have been in the past,” said Jackie Kulesza, a senior vice president at advertising buying agency Starcom. “And for their ratings to grow they are going to need younger viewers coming to the channel. Advertisers like soap operas — they have a very loyal audience. But there are more ways for advertisers to get involved with a show like The Chew than All My Children. ABC is able to monetize those advertiser integrations; that way they can get more revenue than just from the 30-second commercial spots in the show.”

Looks like they will be doing things like product placement, which I wish the soaps could have done more of.

This is where we disagree. I don't think AM has charisma at all. That's why in my opinion, she can't carry the show.
