AMC and OLTL Canceled!

Sound familiar?

"SEARCH FOR TOMORROW came to us from CBS after 31 years, but the audience didn't come with it," Brian Frons, vice president for daytime programming at NBC, said yesterday in a telephone interview. "We, therefore, had to treat the show as a new one, not one with a long history."

Ironically, Frons was an executive at CBS in 1982 and recommended the cancellation of SEARCH FOR TOMORROW from that network. Somewhat like the evil twin brother who always seems to pop up in the soap opera genre, Frons reappeared at NBC and canceled the Procter & Gamble production a second time.

Poor ratings and low acceptance levels from affiliates were factors in the decision, Frons said. SEARCH is last in the daytime ratings race, and is seen on just 72 percent of the NBC-affiliated stations, or approximately 145 outlets.

Procter & Gamble Productions tried several methods for halting the audience erosion. For example, it went on location in Ireland this year, and, said Pam Sussman, Procter & Gamble corporate spokeswoman, "tried more romantic and less melodramatic story lines."

"We've done everything we can to save the show," Sussman said.

or how about this gem?

"We're going to make every attempt to close out all plots," said Frons. "We're also hoping for happy endings."

wow... I wonder if CBS would have cancelled Search if it wasn't for Frons. I guess he was the one who said get rid of it instead of keeping it at 2:30pm. I always thought it was PGP who wanted it moved to NBC because CBS wouldn't air it at 12:30 anymore.

It's very annoying, because Search had strong ratings only a few years before the 1982 cancellation. All they needed was a strong creative revival, which could have happened, as it had happened several times in their recent past. The show could have been a strong performer for CBS, and they could have given Capitol another timeslot and had more time to have a strong initial story, which they did not seem to have.

As for it being too little too late with a Frons firing, I agree with that, but if this means ABC Daytime might stop being a sh!thole then it's worth it. It would also be nice if GH's last year or two was overseen by someone who does not cowtow to Guza's pathetic obsessions, although that seems like a pipe dream.

If true 7 years to late... <_<

Why 7 years? I still remember the day he got the job and the press release that was issued (August 22, 2002, I believe). I had a bad feeling then and an icky feeling when I interviewed him in 2007.

While it wouldn't bring AMC or OLTL back, I would take some solace in the fact that their executioner would eventually get comeuppance. At the very least I think he deserves to lose his job, if not for the PR disasters his recent decision to axe have caused then for the endless suffering his micromanaging inflicted on the people who love and wanted this genre to continue to prosper. Both fans at the people who act and work on the shows. Frons with this one decision has wracked up quite the body count.

I don't expect any of these soaps to be saved. Disney has a directive. I would like to see Frons and as many of his people put down and out of a job as possible. That would be my only dog in this hunt right now.

I don't know how accurate the sources at the New York Post are, but they are claiming Brian Frons may be out soon.

It appears that at least the last part of it may be true....

NY Post wants to talk to me? Read what they wrote yesterday. I did get a "directive" to "keep quiet". Pants on fire denies but it's true.

The PR machine at ABC will be cracking down big time, tis how they've operated for years. Good for Robin Strasser continuing to push through it though, I only hope she doesn't pay for it with an early pink slip.

Just realized, its been a week since the news dropped :( One week closer to the end :(

Anyone remember when there was talk of doing an OLTL primetime spinoff like ABC did with GH?

Another Spin Off on SoapNet?

By Regan Cellura on July 18, 2008

Multiple sources are reporting that Brian Frons, head of ABC Daytime, has said a spin off of One Life to Live is in the works and much like General Hospital Night Shift, the spin off will air on SoapNet. Frons not only heads up ABC Daytime, but also runs SoapNet and it looks like a Young & the Restless
primetime spin off is being discussed as well.

Knoxnews.com and our pal Nelson Branco have the details.

ABC Daytime President Brian Frons told reporters at an "OLTL" press conference today that he and SoapNet have been in talks to develop a spin-off of "OLTL" for primetime. Concepts are being tossed around, but nothing firm has been settled. Among the rumored ideas: Taking police detective John McBain (Michael Easton) and following him on a case.

According to last year's most powerful man on soaps, Brian Frons, SOAPnet will be spinning off OLTL into its own prime-time series. Details are sketchy, but the masterminds are leaning towards focusing on John McBain. Personally, I think they'd be fools not to centre the show around David Vickers and Tuc Watkins. Frons adds Y&R may also get the Night Shift treatment.

Here are the SOD & SOW Covers. Hopefully they're not reading and/or don't mind...

That cover makes me feel sad :(

I'm glad they chose classic characters - I was afraid they'd have Rylee looking desolate, or Ford kissing his bicep.

I think if SOD moved more towards becoming a nostalgia magazine for soaps they might get more interest - they can also cover current stuff and primetime, make it a hybrid.
