Saw this get underway in the Melissa Leo thread and thought it deserved its own.

What names have particular soaps used most often?

What are the the most common soap names?

What are the least used names?

etc,etc

Y&R have repeated a lot of names over the years.

Originally,I think that Bill Bell liked to use family and friends names.

There were 2 Brads who were major characters.

David was used several times, as was Michael. There was Jack Curtis and then Jack Abbott (named for Jack Smith?)

Derek Thurston and Derek,Cricket's rapist. Matt Miller and Matt Clark.

Sharon, teen runaway and Sharon Collins. Amy Lewis and Amy (Matt's girlfriend)

Victoria seems to have been a popular soap name. Off the top of my head, OLTL, Y&R, Texas, AW, GL, Dark Shadows have used it. Also Jennifer or Jenny have been used on AMC, OLTL (twice), GH, Y&R, ATWT, GL, Dark Shadows, SFT, and Days, and I'm sure on some others.

GH had a Michael-fest going on: Mike Corbin, Sonny (Michael Corinthos, Jr) and Carly's son Michael. Then there was Michael "Stone" Cates. Also, Rick Webber's adopted son, Mikey.

Lucy Coe was involved with 2 Kevins: O'Connor and Collins.

The ones that have been used once. I dont think a listing of these need to be brought up as these are obvious

OLTL currently has 2 Johns. John McBain and John Manning (Jack)

A common name is Hope. Soaps which have used this are Days, Y&R, OLTL, GH, B&B, GL

I'm creepily interested in names and name trends, etc. So let me ramble.

I was thinking the other day about how there are names that are relatively common in real life (well, I know several people who have them) but haven't been used a whole lot by soaps. Angela, Megan, Melissa, Tammy, Cindy, Rebecca, Deborah/Debra, Michelle, Denise, etc. Of course there have been soap characters with those names, but when you consider that up until September, there were three major characters named Carly in soapland, but not a single Michelle or Cindy or Melissa, it's kinda odd. Then on the male side, there haven't been many soap characters named Justin, Brandon, Jeremy, Timothy, Shane, Seth, Jordan, Cameron, Aaron, Kenny, etc. But three characters named Rafe that I can think of.

Some names seem to be "retired" once a character takes off and becomes synonymous with the name. You won't be seeing any new characters named Erica, Reva, or Marlena.

I recall one poster once kept track of every character named Angel in soaps and found six of them. The only one I was familiar with was Angel on ATWT.

I've always thought it funny my own name-Dustin--and my sister's name Ashley haven't got much usage on soaps except of course for Dusty on ATWT and Ashley on Y&R. Well I guess there was also Ashleigh on GL but I digress.

    • Ciara/Victoria usually wears Free People, Revolve, or Aritizia, which is expensive, but mid tier. Most of the girls on the show wear the same brands.  You can find it cheap at Nordstrom rack.  Like the John Varvatos jackets that every guy wears lol. I do retail for a living so I have a bit of knowledge on this.  The prices the Worn on TV shows aren't real.  It's just the original retail price.
    • Ah, gotcha Ciara with an I not Ceara with an E. Also, according to the shopping site, Sami's outfit was pricey because it was the jacket from one suit, and the pants from another.  Can you imagine anyone wearing that awful green tweed from head to toe?  This is one time that costuming did a character a solid and broke up that pattern.
    • Aqua is an in house brand for Bloomingdales.  It's not terribly pricey, but not cheap. $150 for dresses.
    • Also, just checked, Hope was wearing Alice + Olivia ($595) and Sami wore a more shocking green, and it was by Aqua (price not indicated)
    • CIARA's outfit would have been fine if the cameraman wasn't literally filming down her shirt.  You could see Victoria's bra and boobs for at least half the episode lol.
    • Also, I'm giving Hope's Chanel jacket and Ceara's leather pants a pass, because I don't think they knew that they would wind up in Salem today when they got dressed.  So, there's been no time/opportunity to change outfits. Although

it reminded me that Sami and Hope seemed to have both shopped at a Chanel-knockoff outlet recently.  And if Hope, Ceara, and Bo suddenly have a change of clothes next week, I'm gonna need a throwaway line about how Hope raided Aunt Maggie's closet because of all that shopping she's been doing with Julie. Yep, it must be why they so rarely show flashbacks of the whole wedding party. Caroline looks like Kate 1.0
    • Lol.  I just really disliked Melissa. Melissa was gone before Billie and I THINK before Carly. I have no idea who the people are on the right of Bo.  Was that the weird time they recast Caroline and Shawn?  I think the kids are Eric and Sami.   Marlena and Abe look fancy and fresh lol.

The third man is Howie Hofstetter, Bo's friend who helped Hope get out of marrying Larry Welch. I'm holding out for a hero… I'll let someone else tell you who the other two are, because it will blow your mind. Poor Bo & Hope had a free destination wedding in England, at a castle, and only the "B" team of Salem was available to attend! Also, (to paraphrase an old song) tonight we're celebratin' the love of Hope's scullcap at her English wedding.  A lot has happened in between. But, it was still an amazing headpiece. That deserves recognition for not only how long KA kept it pinned to her head, but then she loved it so, she wore it at her real wedding.
    • Watch it still be more of a classic than what B&B and Y&R would show.
