I think it is creative tension, mixed with arrogance and taking things way too seriously. I don't think Peter had much respect for Eric from the beginning, since he used cue cards apparently (something Peter derided in an interview that was posted here a while ago) and I think Peter took his acting seriously, maybe too seriously.

He may have been the first actor to stand up to Eric, I would be interested to know how it all went down, because I am sure it would have started almost as soon as Peter turned up.

I seem to recall Bergman’s Emmy wins also provided a deep source of contention between the two actors. I can’t imagine that sit too well with EB, who had been nominated a couple times in the 80’s to see someone on the show steal his thunder.

As for PB he did mention  the work culture at Y&R was so different for him than at AMC it took some time to adjust to it.

@soapfan770 I chalk up PB's 1991 and 1992 Emmy wins to weak competition in the Lead Actor category. I was not riveted by his Emmy winning episode that was rebroadcast during the classics and the clips shown during the Emmy broadcasts those years.

It was posted here before that EB would not submit his name for Emmy consideration. He also didn't mention much about the Emmys in his book and I don't recall EB commenting in the soap press about the years he lost (1987, 1990, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2004).

I know Muhney is a hugely controversial actor on forums and he certainly had his own share of his issues but this seems to mirror a lot of how the similar conflict between him and EB started later on - the new guy who thinks he has the answers, the old guy stuck on his own ways and wanting "respect", the clash of egos and approaches to the job...
All these people have responsibility in the tensions generated but I suspect EB specifically is very rigid by nature and even more so as he established himself as a tentpole of the show and feels he has earned the right to have things his way.
This clashes with the guys who fancy themselves alpha males.
The male leads EB seems to get along with better seem to be the guys who don't care that much (JM, DD back in the day etc) or whose "performances" are in storylines EB is not directly involved in (like KsJ).

I wasn't litigating the specific issue of Muhney or try to both-side what happened later. Muhney's issues are well-known.

I was more interested in the fact the dynamic between him and EB - that they both described at the time long before he was even fired - was very similar to the speculated dynamic between PB and EB to try and suss out a pattern with EB. It is interesting to see in contrast with how well EB works with other actors.

It's weird to think what would have happened if Bell had fired Eric and Peter. Imagine another reboot playing out in the '90s.

For that matter, what would have happened to the guys? Suppose both wanted to stay in L.A. and/or soaps. B&B would be out, but surely GHDOOL and SB would have jumped at either of them.

    • I think Jason might've posted some numbers for the syndication a while ago and the numbers for Falcon Crest was horrible. Like 1.5 rating or something, which was terrible.    ETA: it was actually Paul Raven:   New to syndication 60 min Fall Guy 67 markets 3.1/8 Falcon Crest 110 markets 1.1/5 To get into the top 40, you needed a 4.6/9 rating for reference - and Falcon Crest managed to get into a lot of markets to begin with. In the fall of 1985 Dynasty, Dallas and Knots were syndicated (show / rating / share / coverage % / markets): Dallas 3.4 10 51.7 92 Dynasty 3.4 10 48.7 47  Knots Landing 3.3 10 12.5 20  So, Knots as an example trippled Falcon Crest's rating with 20 markets - I'm sure those were major ones but it just goes to show you how much Falcon Crest bombed in syndication.
    • It's not bad but the stories move too slow. It's the same problem when Dan O'Connor was CO-HW with Van Etten, they have a million stories and they all drag on endlessly with no resolution. I'd argue the majority of the stories airing now are good but you get sick of waiting months for something to happen.
    • Thanks. I must have missed that period entirely for Lifetime.
    • Thanks. I know Marland did that type of thing sometimes but it's less likely with these characters. I don't even remember Alex ever mentioning him.
    • French fan summary Rusty took over Simon's job at Lewis Trucking after Simon transferred to Lewis Oil's North Carolina office to live near Jessie and Calla. I doubt they would bother following up a story for offscreen characters eg marriage and a baby.
    • I suspected that the performance with the reveal was the reason why the Ted actor got the axe and it looks like I was right. He wasn't really good at conveying what needed to be conveyed in those scenes. Claybon is at least slowly improving (but I agree that he still needs to work on his line delivery), but I do wonder what will happen when his big reveal is coming up.
    • I've already asked this before, recently, but can anyone who watched those years more closely tell me if anything said about Jessie and Simon at the end of their profiles is accurate (about them marrying, naming a baby after Brandon/Lujack, etc.)?
    • Nicole is way too smart to not know she was carrying twins - she's a doctor! My guess is that Leslie did abort her baby out of fear, and as payback, stole Ted and Nicole's child (Eva), and stole Kat from another family to replace her in the hospital.
    • Those Soap Central profiles have a lot of incorrect info. According to SOD summaries and the Daytime Newsletter of the time,Tim left town for a new job and Pam reunited with the father of her baby and also departed Springfield. They did not marry.
    • Do we believe that Jabot is at the level of Estee Lauder?? I am on board with Jabot deciding to expand but the way it was handled was ridiculous. Jabot just decided and bingo, that was that. Not months of negotiations and decisions about how it would fit into the Jabot portfolio. And then no follow through. Josh thinks he's serving business stories by characters sitting around and discussing mergers, takeovers and job switching. Now we have Audra setting up her own company -Vibrator or something. Well, why not? You don't need staff, office space or even products.
