These 1982 episodes! Thank you so much!

Now this is a soap opera. Jill's journey from the 1974 episode where she dreams about being rich and is introduced to Kay for the first time to these scenes where she is ready to marry another older rich man after the Phillip tragedy. She is not as naive anymore, she knows what she has to do. And she still believes that the answer to all her problems is finding a father figure to replace Bill Foster. Jill Foster was a fascinating character. It is so sad that  she is an afterthought these days. She should be involved in the Billy stories and the Abbott drama. And the Jack-Ashley scenes. 35 years later we still have the Abbott siblings in the family living room dealing with another family crisis. This is why I love soap operas.

I love JLB. Lori is fascinating, too bad that she didn't become the Newman matriarch instead of Nikki.

I find the Nikki scenes the least interesting from the 1982  episodes. Kevin is also rather boring. It is nice to see Kay involved though. Patty is someone I expected to be bland and boring, but the actress was very good. Too bad that she didn't stay longer with the show. Characters like Karen, Carolyn, Robert, Claire, Angela, Cindy came and went without leaving a mark. Those crazy transitional Y&R years with all these random people. I still don't understand how the show survived this era.

The Lance/Leslie/Brooks scenes were something I enjoyed a lot. They felt like a seventies romance novel and their tone was completely different than the rest of the show.

I actually have to say I liked Deborah adairs take on Jill.  The Jill I really remember is Jess Walton and the very ending of Brenda Dicksons stint, but I had heard from my late mom and other relatives that they liked DA as Jill.

I bet it was jarring when Brenda Dickson came back in 1983 considering all the changes in Jill in the 3 years she was gone.  There was no way that BD would have played this scene the way DA did...where she is marrying John for security, yet truly loves and cares for John due to the father figure angle.  Jill dated Andy???  I can imagine this Jill dating him, but not the other two Jills.

I always wondered what went on with BD and the show in her second run. What bits I saw of her 70's run, she was more human. In her 80's run (when I was watching then) she came across as a campy caricature and cheap copy of Alexis on Dynasty. At one point she started speaking with kind of a eurotrash accent.

She said she had to play that up because she no longer felt Jill was a heroine, or something along those lines. Whatever happened it seemed like things started spinning out of control somewhere between the early months or first year of her return and 1986-1987. It's a shame, since as much I do love Jess as Jill, I think Brenda at her best really got the heart and emotions of Jill (as shown in some of those '80s flashback episodes and more raw moments).

I know what you mean. It was always kind of sad that when Kay would flashback to the past after JW took over, they could never show some of her best scenes with Jill, since BD was no longer playing the part. JC in her book said BD could be a handful at times, she still loved working with her and people behind the scenes did her wrong.

I read this quote too, but it confused me.  From '78-'79, Jill tricked Stuart Brooks into marriage by pretending she was pregnant, and tried and failed to get a divorce settlement from him. For the rest of '79, before BD left, she went back to plotting with Derek how to fleece Katherine of her money.

So... seems like Jill of the late '70s was already a schemer - not sure why BD was so thrown off when she came back.

Jill has always been a character that's wanted more from life.

It's just over the years she's matured into a woman who is ok with that.

Deborah's Jill is a softer presence than Brenda's flighty Jill or Jess earthy Jill but she's very much in line with who the character always has been.

Watching the stuff with Kevin and Nikki just has wishing me once more that we could see Christopher Holder return as Kevin and learn he, and not Victor, is Victoria's biological father.  That, and not Ashley's being exposed as Brent Davis' kid, should be what's playing out right now.

    • Whoa. She should have fought like hell to get that. Was it the greatest show ever? No, but it had a fantastic cast and was practically guaranteed to last multiple seasons because of its star power. Could have certainly led to bigger and better things. If it had flopped she could have always gone back to soaps. Judith Light broke through on a sitcom where she was basically second banana to Tony Danza. That grew into a very busy and distinguished career. The woman is still regularly booked to this day.
    • I could understand her being frustrated by the fact that she'd been in the business 10+ years at that point, and probably couldn't even get in the door. But then again, she'd already gone out for pilot season once (that we know of) and she and  her agent knew a 35-ish woman had a very difficult time in Hollywood. I know she did a few guest spots, but other than Designing Women, nothing I saw--not even a Murder She Wrote, and that show had tons of ex-soapers on it. I mean, God bless Marilu Henner, but even having been on Taxi, she couldn't get arrested for years either.
    • I didn't rewatch that period, so I'm not really sure how much Bill is on. I recall something about him living at the boardinghouse. I think Van made Matt his guardian, and why she didn't name Josh would be a mystery to me, other than the HW decided they needed to keep Bill in Matt's sphere. Nola is also his aunt, although they don't know each other well, and Van wouldn't have trusted her anyway. There's Dinah---but she's unreliable. Billy gets out of jail around NYE.

    • That's on Kimmer. As someone posted above...she was offered roles in pilots but she would be part of an ensemble or supporting. She didn't want that so she came back to GL. I don't know what she thought would happen..someone offering her "Here's Kimmer!" or The "Zimmer Comedy Powerhouse Hour" variety show..but her housefrau fans did not have the same pull in HW as they did on the soaps. Forbes and Watros knew that you had to take small parts to get noticed ands start a career in primetime. I know she was in consideration for the wife in Evening Shade, but when you go up against Marilou Henner, the soap diva looses. I could see her frustrated in a role like that, where she has to be the understanding wife with a bit of sass, but she could have made it work, if it wasnt for her huge ego.  I think it would have been an issue haveing all the powerhouse comedy actors surrounding...(lets face it..Alice Ghostly woudl have wiped the floor with her...) but it would have been a good launching padd.
    • Oh good, so I don't have to wait too long haha. I'm glad she cares about seeing Bill graduate. I'm guessing I'm in for a bumpy ride between Bill and Matt, if he's going to be his caretaker? Who else could it be, maybe Josh?

    • Maeve makes a few sporadic appearances, but returns full-time the next spring/summer. She's back in time to see Bill and Michelle graduate, although she skulks around town and wasn't going to tell anyone she was alive. She comes back wearing this HUGE hat---which was a throwback to the old Vanesaa. lol.
    • Aww, yeah it's very heartbreaking and I mostly enjoyed the Nola/Vanessa scenes because they finally let their walls down and came together in a beautiful moment. So Nola was at the hospital already and bumped into Vanessa, who had MRI papers that fell out of her hand and Nola went down to pick them up and asked her what was going on. Later, Vanessa confided in her about her disease. Then, Nola told Zachary on the beach (he prodded her and already alluded to knowing something was going on with Van), and then Vanessa found out she told him and got a little upset. Now, however, Nola is strangely absent while everyone is mourning her death. I'm curious if Nola will actually tell people about her MRI results. I would assume so. Only Nola, Rick, Roger and Zachary know anything, although there is the MRI results letter from the mail that everyone has missed seeing at home. I'm sure it'll all come out at some point. But... I just saw the next episode and the opening already cut Vanessa out and added Dahlia and Zachary. I guess Maeve is gone for a long time

That will break my heart seeing the town continue to mourn her and assume she's dead. I can't wait to see her return though, and I have to imagine feelings will be torn between loving that she's alive and being very angry she did all of this. While I hate what Vanessa is doing, I'm happy to hear it's not totally against her character. I think you're right, had Henry still been around, she wouldn't put him through this. I'm still surprised she is with Bill, though. I get her feelings on Matt, because she wants him to move on, but still very heartbreaking. I'm glad this was Maeve's choice to have a break vs. being fired.    Interesting, so I'm curious to see who they eventually pair Phillip with. They're flirting with a Phillip/Annie pairing, but I'm not sure if they'll go that route with the Jeva drama, her growing pill addiction, and Rick's past with her.  Ugh, yeah I'm so sad to see Bridget do a total 180 in the last couple weeks. She has always been a strong character from what I've seen, but now she's just bending over backwards to get Hart to love her and it reeks of desperation. Yeah, sure, this new Hart is eye candy, but I'm already tired of seeing Hart/Dinah have sex all over Springfield and the Cayman Islands haha.
    • Yes.  I remember them together during the early summer of 1986.  They didn't share scenes again for 30 years until 2017 because Carrie wasn't on the show when Anna returned during Sydney's kidnapping.
