On the Another World board there was discussion about the 1978 Emmy Awards. It got me to thinking, why was Y&R and it's performers never nominated or considered for emmys till the mid 1980's ?

The 70's and early 80's had fantastic actors on the show that was deserving of a nomination. Jeanne Cooper and Brenda Dickson had the major storyline of Jill/Phillip/Katherine. I have heard that Janice Lynde's performance during Leslie's mental breakdown was worthy of an award. Jamie Lyn Bauer had lots of meaty material during her entire time on the show. Y&R it seems was never on the ballot.

It seems that SB was one of the few exceptions, as it debuted in 1984, got its first nominations in 1986 and then started winning the biggies a couple of years after that - including Best Show three years running. I am surprised, though, that Y&R took so long to get major Emmy attention with someone of Bill Bell's pedigree at the helm.

Just out of curiosity but did we ever see the Crimson Lights set before 1994? I still don't remember Sharon, Matt, and Amy coming on screen but I do recall having a major WTF moment with seeing Morrow as the aged Nick as little Nick had appeared not too long before that(B&B later did this with Rick).

Y&R had that early Best Show win in 1975 I believe and won again multiple times in the 80s but the acting and writing was overlooked for the most part. Of course competition was stiff at the time--GL, ATWT, AW, and Ryan's Hope were giving their highest output too during those years too. Harding Lemay even gave a famous anecdote that Bell stood up to receive the Outstanding Writing Emmy for either Days and Y&R when in actuality Lemay had won. I believe Tracey Bregman was the first Y&R actor or actress to win an Emmy, while Terry Lester was first to get a nomination.

I can't believe Dorothy Green who played Jennifer didn't get nominated for the mastectomy story. Her performance blew me away from the episodes I saw above. The scenes where she learns she has cancer and asks the girls to leave her alone for a while and then breaks down and when she wakes up and tells Snapper she doesn't want to live like this is heart wrenching.

Great to see these episodes.

This is the first time I've seen Tom Selleck,Susan Brown and Paul Stevens on Y&R.

So Susan's character Fran was an old friend of Stu's and a possible romantic interest.Any one know how long she was on and how far her story progressed?

Didn't Lanna Saunders play Mrs Selleck? I know Y&R wanted to sign Tom but he refused so they eventually dropped him. I wonder what story Bill Bell would have played had Jed stayed on. Maybe a variation of the Lance/Lorie story?

    • I'm more than convinced she's a relative of Hayley after seeing this.

The resemblance is too uncanny.  Now if they can just persuade Debbi Morgan to play their mom we've hit the motherload.
    • It's hard to say about MBE's following.  Katherine was a mess from the start and diametrically opposite of Kayla.  Both Nina and Ava were messes too, but the material was more in their wheelhouse.  Plus, both came frome cancelled shows so that was the only option for their fans.
    • As limited as the actor who plays Tomas is, after today, I'm really excited to see the Eva/Tomas/Kat triangle pick up some speed. And, I was thinking that I wasn't gonna have to resurrect this hashtag, but yeah #FreeSmitty

    • ICAM.  KL needed to end in '93.  I'm just glad David Jacobs resisted CBS' efforts to convince him otherwise.

    • Dear Paula Cwikly and Jeanne Marie Ford,   Please write out the character of Leo Stark. It would be greatly appreciated.   Sincerely, Soapsuds
    • Oh my -- long time ago, huh??  What was the actual storyline? Here's what I recall: Susan was married to David Martin and had his baby, Dickie.  David allowed Dickie to fall off a swing-set or something, and Dickie was killed.  So a distraught Susan shot and killed David.  Julie had been having sex with David Martin, and was pregnant with his child when Susan killed him.  Then Julie named her newborn child David.  And that was really what began the big feud between Susan and Julie.  I KNOW I have a lot of this history wrong -- so anyone please feel free to correct my historical errors.  I would appreciate that very much.   Now back to Denise's Another World connection.  Although I loved Denise as an actress, I was never crazy about Mary McKinnon.  Mostly because of her completely unbelievable introduction -- two back-from-the-dead characters returning in the SAME storyline. It seemed ridiculous, and was just a bit too much for me to accept.
    • Monday's episode(what was today's before the pre emption) is posted   https://www.cbs.com/shows/video/CAD_kZcynpkzM5vrwPg77Hh5MQD3hTbH/
    • Denise had so much inherent warmth, yet also layered her work with neuroses and emotion, making sure her characters were never as one-dimensional as the writing could have been. She was one of the first high profile poachings from one soap to another, which could have been a recipe for disaster, but she worked hard and turned Lesley into such an integral part of GH's rebuilding. The show may not have survived the '70s without her.  I wish they'd done more with Lesley when they brought her back in 1996. I hope more of Denise's run at DAYS will appear. I enjoyed Denise's work on AW, in a very underwritten part - it felt like she was just hitting her stride in playing the role when she left.  We are losing so many of our legends, but in moments like this I try to just be grateful we had them for as long as we did.  I do feel terrible for those at GH as they've been hit hard the last few years.
