I realize John's forcing Marlena to keep the penthouse ("I'm Isabella's father, and I think that falls under child support") is something that's SUPPOSED to make him look heroic and manly; but, AFAIC, it just makes him look like a Class-A dick.  And if she decides not to stay at the penthouse OR at your loft, John, what are ya gonna do?  Are you gonna threaten to sue Doc for full custody of your love child?  Great balls of fire, Rhett Butler, I DO believe I'm gettin' the vapors!

Oh, well.  At least Dee's looking fab in her newest pink outfit.

Yeah, it is sort of a dick move, but it is very John.  I would take that penthouse too, though.  I think I am more put off by the fact the show acts like Marlena (a well known Dr.) couldn't just go out and buy or rent her own apartment.  I assume Marlena wasn't planning on living at the Hortons the rest of her life.   They don't even change Belle's birth certificate until right before John/Marlena's wedding in 1999, so I am not sure what rights John thought he had lol.

That, too.

But it seems like whether we're talking about John, or Roman, or Don, or even Stefano, Marlena always attracts men who think "taking care of her" means controlling her; and Marlena, who's supposed to be this modern, forward-thinking woman, always swoons for it, when she's proven she's more than capable of taking care of herself (demonic possession notwithstanding).  That's so jacked up, and DAYS is jacked up for never addressing it.

I actually think John is her least controlling mate.  He actually seems to respect her and her career and gives her a lot of credit for 'saving' him.   Roman and Don were always dicks about her job.   And then I am not sure if John has some residual control issues because he still has some of Roman's memories?  I think in the 90's it was worse because Marlena spent so much time waiting for John to dump Kristen and getting kidnapped and possessed John had to rescue her often.  I have more of a problem with Marlena sitting around like a damaged woman because she cheated on her husband just wishing and hoping John would wise up a leave Kristen.  It was the 90's not the 1950's.

That reminds me of an exchange between two characters (both louses) on KNOTS LANDING:

"It's not the 1950's, just tell him we're sleeping together!"

"It's not the 1960's either!"

Anyways.  You're right.  Marlena shouldn't have been sitting around, punishing herself for the affair, or waiting for John to leave Kristen.  Let her focus on her children and rebuilding her practice; and if a reconciliation with Roman (or a returning Don) was out of the question, then let a new man enter her life (and no, Stefano DiMera and Alex North are not what I mean, lol).

Seriously.   I know it was bad and awful and Roman was a decent guy and Sami was traumatized.  But John/Marlena had sex twice.  They weren't meeting at a local hotel for years.  It was an impossible situation but JER made Marlena out to be this sad woman who needed John to be with her and she wasn't allowed to have a life of her own.   Meanwhile John was out impregnating women all over town and living his best life.   I don't know of any soap character who got more [!@#$%^&*] for an affair especially since 1. she wanted to tell Roman all along 2. she thought Belle was Roman's kid 3. her daughter Sami is a psycho who still blames her life problems on an affair that happened 30 years ago.  Idk, stuff happens.  Marlena spent 4 years celibate to make up for her sins.

I think Marlena was the person Lee trusted enough to tell her secret that Renee was her daughter by Stefano. And Marlena was there for Renee during the strangler storyline and became a sort of mother/sister figure after Lee left.

When Renee told off the entire town for making her miserable, she specifically pointed out Marlena and Chris as her friends to - i guess - let them and the rest of the town know that her attack wasn't aimed at them.

Just one of the many reasons why I hated JER's writing and wanted him gone from the show.  I mean, maybe such misogyny was present during the Sheri Anderson/Maggie DePriest/Leah Laiman/Thom Racina years, too, but it just wasn't so obvious, or so off-putting.

Yeah.   I loved JER's Days at the time, but the whole story made Marlena AND Kristen look sad.  Marlena for being afraid to go after what she wanted because of guilt and shame and Kristen for doing everything to keep a man who just wasn't into her.  I love Drake/John as much as anyone, but he's not worth it lol.  But Bo and Austin were in similar situations as well.  I think John was the worst because he wasn't upfront about his feelings at all and Bo/Austin at least were pretty clear on where they stood with Billie/Sami.  John was framed as the ultimate hero (which I do think he is), but was actually just causing massive chaos and ruining lives under the guise of being 'noble'.  Just extreme misogyny as you said, but I don't think I noticed it much at the time.

But I do think there was a lot of misogyny in the 70's/80's too.  Roman, Bo, Steve, Don, et all were all very dismissive of their mates careers and there was a lot of manhandling going on back then.   Early/bad Steve was pretty rough with Kayla.  John/RoJohn basically kidnapped Marlena before we knew he was Roman.  Jack's a rapist.  Tony's a rapist among other things.  Don/Marlena have a sex scene after they split up that's borderline rape.  Idk, JER made things extra weird, but it was always around.

And I am sick to death of it, too.  I am sick and tired of Samantha Gene Brady getting a pass to behave like a total, spoiled bitch, because, once upon a time, her mother had the audacity to love someone other than her father.  Never mind that that man had been more of a father (figure) to her than her own OR that what John and Marlena did doesn't even come close to what Sami, the so-called "tragic heroine" of DAYS, has done over the decades, or the lives she has destroyed.  I mean, where does SHE get off?

I could understand why Erica (AMC) or Delia (RH) or Reva (GL) behaved the way they did, because they operated from places of real, genuine want and pain.  But Sami is like GH's Heather: there's no credible, psychological basis for their villainy.  They're both just self-centered, narcissistic bitches; and in Sami's case, she's just a bitch for no [!@#$%^&*] reason that would make any sense to any writer who wasn't a hack like Jim [!@#$%^&*] Reilly.

As far as I am concerned, the poorly developed, poorly motivated nuisance that is Sami Brady can STAY gone.

That was the trouble with JER's writing.  Everyone was so focused on the big watercooler moments - "Oooooooooo-wee, did you see Carrie the slug the hell outta that bitch Sami!?" - that no one ever stopped and really took a hard, serious look at the messages he was sending out with his writing.

    • That's what Julie Hanan Carruthers is doing for BTG at the new studio in Atlanta, but JHC is credited.
    • I remember when the whole Missy Reeves controversy started in 2012.  She tweeted support of a business that had made homophobic statements. Greg Rikaart (who was on Y&R back then) publicly called her out on it, but was willing to reach out and speak with her. Article here: https://greginhollywood.com/greg-rikaart-talks-about-his-twitter-war-with-fellow-soap-star-melissa-reeves-over-anti-gay-chick-fil-a-73139 That being said, ten years later, on DAYS, in 2022, when they had they double wedding of Leo/CraigWesley and Gwen/Xander, Jack and Jennifer came to the wedding.  At that time, Missy Reeves was only intermittently available for DAYS. Jennifer was living "in Boston" and Cady McClain and Missy were each intermittently appearing as Jennifer, on the specific occasions when the show required a Jennifer to appear. Missy wasn't on contract and she could have said no. But she chose to appear as Jennifer for the gay wedding of Greg Rikaart's character.   So... I mean... I would assume they reached a détente behind-the-scenes. Missy still has her belief system but there's that.
    • That was one of the best grandslam finals.  Alcaraz comes all the way back down 2 sets to 0, and three match points in the 3rd set, to win it in a 5th set tie-break.  And the quality of play was excellent - so many great shots.  What a battle!
    • Indeed. I may try to watch it in full sometime, but not anytime soon... Mark played Sean Baxter for a few episodes when Courtney married Andy. Burke was either on Broadway or at OLTL at that time, I suppose.
    • Well, Josh was a horndog. LOL Yep. It was one of the first really weird things Reva did with her PPD. She became obsessed with the idea that Dylan and Sam should get married. Sam was only 17, and needed her parent's permission. Reva helped them leave town so they could go to a neighboring state where Sam was old enough. Ross, Billy and Josh stopped them, then Sam went to India to try and persaude Justin. Reva followed her and didn't tell Josh she was going. While Reva was gone, Josh advertised for nannies, and Harley applied. He ended up hiring someone else. But when Reva returned, she hired Harley because (in her weird mental state) she wanted someone she could trust with the kids (because she feared Josh was trying to get rid of her and that Vanessa wanted the children.). After Reva starts treatment, she asks Harley to stay until she's stronger because she's good with the kids. At the party, Reva starts going off the rails, insulting Justin and Josh hauls her to a private dining room to ask WTF. Reva starts confronting him about the "affair" with Vanessa, and he realizes she is weird. He locks her in the dining room and frees Mindy and Van from the ladies room (where Reva has locked them in). Van starts telling him that Reva attacked her and needs help.  Reva escapes out the window of the dining room and goes back to the party, climbs onto a table and starts a striptease. Josh gets her to stop, takes her home and after filling Ed in, decides to go to the doctor the next day. Reva then takes off and spends days running around town, coming on to a guy she thinks is Billy, Billy, Hamp, Frank and Roger.  Roger takes her to his apartment and takes nude pictures of her, which he tries to blackmail Billy with. He wants the deed to the land the Towers is on in exchange for them. (Billy had been left the deed by a sweet old lady who lost her home in the 5th street fire. Roger had stolen the deed from her before she died. After Roger took those pics of Reva, she saw him hide them, and took an envelope from the hiding place. She didn't realize she'd taken the deed and not the pictures.)  Anyway, Billy and Vanessa trick Roger into burning the pictures, claim the deed and at the Towers opening reveal that Billy owns the land and therefore the Towers. That's what led to Roger and Alex's breakup and Roger and Mindy's affair. Mark Lewis was on ATWT? 1986 is not a good year, storywise. No bueno. Muy no bueno.
    • All the time they spent trying to make viewers feel sorry for Chad only for him to not even last that long. I wonder if they knew Richard Burgi was going so quickly. You're right about Josie replacing Cheryl. On paper, this should have made sense, given all the ties Josie had to the canvas, but I did prefer Cheryl. There was something very synthetic about Alexandra Wilson.  I suppose even if she did have some fans they were just so used to getting rid of people left and right, so she was more collateral damage. As you said above I do wonder what the plans were for Peggy Lazarus. I think AWHP mentioned her once telling Peter that Peggy Lazarus wasn't her real name. Maybe she would have been another Carl moll... Rebecca Hollen never did get her due in her soap roles.
    • So true...Hackney might have had a story on FC with Richard being an old lover of his, but reveals herself to be a Cartel member and blackmails Richard with something into doing her dirty work  LOL. But of course Richard had his hands full with the double trouble sisters Ms. Jones and Ms. Braxton that season.

    • Cat herself will be a stumbling block all her own as she vowed to Chad to stay away from him, thus redeeming her of her crime morally. Classic DAYS would have them gazing longingly at each other at Doug's Place or Blondie's, while Liz is serenading the room with a song aptly chosen to represent their feelings of emotional turmoil.
    • From what I just recently watched, they were setting her up to go into future stories. She was Emmy nomination worthy in the material I saw. If some viewers did not like her, the character could have been rehabilitated after that sick storyline. It feels like they destroyed a character for fun and then tossed her to the curb. Spencer had chemistry with everyone. I'm just retroactively angry on Spencer's behalf.  You're right about how Cheryl was often forgotten and pushed aside and I would take Cheryl over Josie. I think soaps need characters like Cheryl. Characters like Josie are way too common. Josie always got on my nerves.
    • CBS was back in third place in 1994/95. That was the season CBS lost NFL broadcasting rights which also cost them several established affiliates in major media markets. 1995 CBS was sold to Westinghouse and Les Moonves arrived. 1995/96 CBS was trying to be young and cool to compete with NBC and Fox, but it was an epic failure and CBS was once again in third place.
