I am pretty relaxed. I didn't think you were challenging anything.  But the fact that Mickey was trying to romance a woman that had a 19 year old pregnant daughter doesn't make him look younger either.  JC does have nice eyes, but he never looked "young" .  I would honestly buy he was Alice's younger brother before one of her children.  Same with Bill.  But, again, I can't speak for the times because I wasn't alive and I can't make a correct assumption for the style in that era.

Rugged was probably a better overall look for him.   And I am not saying looks, perse, but actual age.  I don't think he was a bad looking guy.  Just a little older looking and didn't age great, so I think that didn't help his cause throughout the years.

Again, my perception of something I didn't see is only that and an opinion.  I am not sure if I think JC or EM's acting held up that well either.   The weird joke about Alice and the widower fell weirdly flat and it was clear JC flubbed his line as well in that episode.

I haven't seen enough of BM's work to make a full, accurate assessment, but you kinda have me hung up on rapemance..  I am just saying I can see the reasons these characters might have been backburnered or ignored.  Jed Allen, Bill Hayes, Quinn Redecker, etc weren't young either but seemed a bit younger.  Whether it was love interests or story-the Horton kids aged out into middle age very quickly.

I'm not clear about that either.  Was she jealous of Julie's beauty and youth?  Did she harbor a secret desire to be with Doug?  Did Julie remind her of her recently deceased mother?

Elizabeth Harrower seemed to be trying so hard to convince viewers that Laura was unstable that she got forgot that her motivations, however irrational they were, still needed to make some sense.

Perhaps, Laura had developed a sudden, irrational hatred of all the Hortons, borne out of her rape and being forced to conceal Michael's true paternity for years, and wrecking Julie's life was just one part of her overall agenda.

Still, I think the audience deserved a better explanation than "Well, she's nuts!".

Of course, I'm still not sure what was wrong with Laura, exactly, or why it took so long for her illness to manifest itself.  I mean, was she schizophrenic, or bipolar, or...what?

(By the way, I really hope Ron Carlivati isn't reading this thread.  You KNOW reading about Jennifer once being abandoned on a bus by her mentally ill mother is gonna lead him to create a split personality for Miss Chick-Fil-A.)

Let's add Addie and Tom Jr into the mix.Apart from Marie the rest of the Hortons were old before their time.

Tom and Alice were supposed to have married young,  By the time she was in her 50's , Alice had 30 years of wife and mother under her belt. She was also a grandmother.

Raising all those kids she wouldn't be paying much attention to fashion and personal style.

Also at that time, women of a certain age adopted a look deemed appropriate for their age.

Also I guess they wanted Alice to look a little older when they were casting actors who weren't young enough to be her children IRL.

Actually, later on Alice  dressed much more fashionably as a woman in her 70's.

I don't think it was normal mostly because it was costly to edit them in. I think most shows back then were still "live" as in being played out/filmed like live theatre even though they didn't air live. I think it wasn't until the 70s when video tape became the norm that flashbacks became more common.

This has been discussed elsewhere.

In Days case, as we know all the tapes were kept, whereas on the live shows they had to specify ahead of time if they wanted to retain a particular scene.

So days had access to all past episodes, the reason the flashback is lengthy I believe is that tape editing was not as advanced so they had to show the entire scene.

    • Where do you discover this crazy rumor??
    • Jill Farren Phelps was always very skilled at saying what she meant onscreen in the bluntest way possible, like whenever she wanted fans to support one character vs. the other (hence Megan McTavish groaning about having to write Kale Browne's Sam Rappaport into three days a week at OLTL). Perhaps you should consider doing the same. Historically your intent is always far more obvious than your efforts at coy embroidery anyway. You believe people are dismissing Phelps' accomplishments, and suggest misogyny and fan blinders allow people to too easily pigeonhole and dismiss her skill set. I think we all understand her varied skill set. We're saying it's not enough to make up for her deficiencies as a storyteller and creative. JFP was undoubtedly a skilled technical producer. As a solo storyteller, and de facto HW, she was a repeat and predictable failure. She was not the first or last EP (male or female) to think she was a writer. If you want us to stop taking your behavior personally when you suggest misogyny is at play in board opinions of JFP, perhaps you should consider spending the next 10+ years here not acting like you're the only one who gets it.

Melissa was here today & we went to Michael's Crafts & Ofc Depot. In Michael's there were two beautiful LITTLE girls who kept staring at me, so I gave them a littel wave & very quietly said HI & then did back. I told Melissa they were staring at me. She smiled & said "Purple. A lot of little girls love purple & you forget but you have purple hair. Seeing you their whole imaginations are transformed! Thinking "That lady has purple hair. That means I can have purple hair! They had no clue before seeing you that it was possible." I just laughed & laughed.
    • This opening scene is hilarious...it's like someone wrote out the script for Philip with one hand. And Rick...sniffing a scarf over and over. And in their next scene they are still sniffing the [!@#$%^&*] scarf as the camera stays all over Philip's bare chest and armpits as he keeps working out. Insane stuff.

Bay City better be ready, because I'm back!   At Vicky's apartment she is once again drowning in doubts and jealousy. Deep down she realizes that her dream wedding will be a farce and nothing can change that. Bridget tries to calm her down, but the heroine is determined to suffer. She is not hearing any positive thoughts. She doesn't believe Jamie will marry her. At the Cory Publishing building another farce is in process. Iris, once again pretending to be the angel of love and sisterhood... is telling Mac and Rachel some wonderful news. When Iris has good news, you really need to look out for yourself. That's when things are bad. So what are the news? Miss Devil has put Amanda up for an award! Mac is smiling from ear to ear, and Rachel is suspicious. Maybe that's the effect Iris is looking for. To once again accent on the fact that Rachel doubts and criticizes her daughter. Iris will do anything to destabilize their relationship. She is like a cancer. Back to Vicky! Jamie is at the door. Looking like a sad puppy, he has come with a surprise. No, he is not gonna leave her and her unborn... Not yet. He has bought her earrings. Sad face. How nice. NOT. Victoria, of course... manages to break one of them the moment she touches it. Bad premonition maybe? She was back in hysterics. It's not easy to trap a man into marriage. Then you have to live with someone that didn't want you in the first place.  We were introduced to a new character (to me at least she is new) - Cass's sister - Stacey. She is giving me "hidden skeletons in the closet"-vibes. Love a girl like that. Stunning actress. I like her. The highlight of the episode was the strange and creepy reveal of Evan the escort... hugging someone named Janice's grave. I remember she had an issue with Rachel... and Rachel killed her in self defense I think... It was hinted in prior episodes, but I lack the context and story. I just know that everyone at the Frame house was mad that Rachel killed the bish. But I also got the impression that this Janice was sick in the head. So Evan is now talking to her grave and telling her he is going to ruin Rachel's life basically. Oh, Evan... I liked you better as a sexy gigolo.  Overall - 10/10 - how can I rate it lower when I haven't watched in months!!!

    • Once again, Marlena and Kayla were used very effectively and I couldn’t be happier.  Marlena counseling Johnny and then Chanel was the best part of today. They’re really delving into the human emotion of this storyline and I think that’s a good thing. It feels so much mature than it was before. EJ’s fear about what could happen to Johnny if he doesn’t let go of his anger could lead to some really good storylines in the future.  I also really appreciate the way that Paula/Jeanne are mixing it up and having different characters interact with each other. It was nice to see Shawn and Johnny remember that they’re cousins and share a scene together. I liked the parallel that was drawn between the two of them, and what’s going on with their fathers. I did have mixed feelings about everything with Cat though. I enjoyed Chanel warning her about EJ, mostly because it played into the way that she was written today. But I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Chad/EJ scenes. The two of them discussing Chad’s potential feelings for Cat didn’t really keep my interest.  But above all, I feel that everyone is being used more effectively and that we’re getting a better understanding of everyone as well. And that was exactly what Days needed.
    • It's a wild story for sure, especially the final conclusion (and fireworks offcamera, like Victoria Wyndham tearing into Michael Logan).
