Will ABC Daytime Cut 20 Scripted Episodes Per Year, Per Soap?

I wonder if ABC writers will have no choice but to play nice or whether they will go on strike against their company?

No doubt the audience will be treated to early episodes of Greenlee/Ryan. Kendall/Zach, John/Natalie, Cole/Starr, Jason/Sam, and Spinelli/Maxie etc.

I am so glad this is happening, mainly because this should mean no soap will be getting cancelled for a while. This won't start until 2011?

The thing about soaps and reruns is the episodes aren't self-contained. So, if one of those mystical young, potential viewers catches a rerun and comes across a character or storyline that they really like, they can't tune in the next day to see things progress.

Well it's starting now with Brenda Barrett day. I am almost certain they'll be cutting more episodes over the Thanksgiving Holiday, Christmas, and New Years.

More Events Planned For ABC Daytime

The upcoming SOAPnet tribute to Brenda is just the start of ABC Daytime's plans to have more encore episodes in their network lineup. A spokesperson for ABC Daytime/SOAPnet explains, "Fans have often expressed the desire to see their favorite episodes of our soaps… Throughout the year, ABC Daytime will occasionally encore episodes that will enhance current story and give fans the opportunity to see episodes they really loved and have wanted to see again."

I'm all for it. With this Brenda thing, they've gone back as far as 14 years, so I'm gonna keep a little faith in ol' ABCD. See what they can do.

I would half-expect some "flashbacks" of Jane Elliot wearing a Debbie Harry wig and blue dress, sitting in the corner at a hospital costume party, telling Bobbie that she sure does love Luke and someday she's going to marry him.

The current ABC soaps would not be able to take on a production schedule like PC had towards the end, shooting a years worth of episodes in 6 months and taking 6 months off. It worked fine for the 30 minute format but with an hour long format it would just not be possible. The only way they could save on budget by altering the production schedule would be to do what DAYS does and shut down production for 15/16 weeks a year.

Actually PC was canceled during their first six month hiatus. So that six months off/six months of work never really took affect. I believe PC stopped production in March of 2003 and went a six months hiatus. They were scheduled to come back in August but it never happened. They were canceled a few months into their first hiatus and plans to come back that August were scraped. The show went off the air in October.

That is not accurate...

PC took on the six months on/six months off beginning in 2002(I think). They had at least one hiatus before they returned to shoot another six months and then get canned.

Days has off like 14 weeks a year. They break one week a month, take an extended summer and holiday vacation. It has really helped their budget.
