I don't think that AMC's 18 to 49 women demo is ever going to improve in a major way. It seems to have plateaued so there is only down from here.

Got this odd feeling that AMC is going to become the 'new ATWT' or even GL back when it was good. The shows seems to be muli-gen and focused on family. I've only seen a few episodes but might start tuning in soon. I am over all the blood and guts of Y&R and FamPorn of B&B

I like to think its because they're going back to some classic soap tropes with modern twists. They have workplace fights for control (Erica/Greelee, Angie/David); classic romance with a shoe about to drop (Erica/Jack/Greenlee/David, Angie/Jesse/illness, Tad/Liza/Damon/Colby, Madison/Ryan/?)

There's a blissfully happy couple - Jamandu

Class/birthright issues: Scott v. JR

I don't love it all but I recognize it.

Exactly! After years of being a plot-driven mess, AMC has gone back to being a classic soap again. I hope the July sweeps bring in more viewers 18-49!

Sweeps months are February, May, August,& November.

Thus the next one is in August.

No it isn't. The next sweeps is in July.

That's a very good analysis, I hadn't thought about it. I haven't watched the show on a regular basis in a while so I was only going by some of the comments here, which seem mixed. The structure you lay out does seem like what soaps used to be. I think they are missing some of the touches which made AMC unique (unless you count Jake's mugging as humor) but then those have been missing for a long time now. There seems to be a lot of excitement here about Annie/JR and Liza/Damon so I guess that might reflect some stronger viewer interest.

For the record I absolutely do not consider RPG's mugging to be humor. :P

Indeed it is.

I honestly believe that OLTL is about to surge. There is every reason to think that the show should pick up some fraction of ATWT viewers since there will be no other soap to watch. I know GH didn't get any boost when GL went off the air; however, GL was a morning soap in many markets plus had been a walking dead show ratings wise for the final four years. ATWT was doing better than OLTL till 2009 and, if the show bring on a few World cast members, has everything to gain.

Those ATWT viewers are all 49+ years of age, and ABC doesn't want those viewers.

Not all of ATWT viewers is 49+ i'm 21 and I watch ATWT. I might even watch OLTL everyday after ATWT goes off the air.

I don't believe that soap viewers switch to other showswhen their soaps go off the air anyway. The average viewer just isn't that loyal to the genre. When ATWT is gone, those people will start watching Cold Case and Law & Order. JMHO.

I agree. Most people who aren't diehard soap fans, don't suddenly start watching new soaps. ATWT viewers will watch whatever replaces it or turn to Law & Order.

?? I always thought sweeps were every 3 months

FEB March April MAY June July AUGUST September October NOVEMBER December January.

I'm also pretty sure I have soap mags with covers saying "August Sweeps".

marceline ...where did you get those dates?? Did they change the months or am I just crazy??

I'm pretty sure it's always been July, though I had a few misonceptions of my own, including the notion that July was a mini-sweeps of sorts and was only conducted for daytime.

If OLTL can just make it up a 2.0 in household and hold steady with demos, they will be the top soap on ABC. In 18-49 year olds, they are coming up on the heals of GH. I also think ATWT, at this point, has a lot of those old school soap fans: Who else would watch? This isn't anything like the GH/GL situation, with GL airing often in the AM.
