OLTL: Discussion for the week May 24

Am I the only one who wants Cris and Layla to stay together and be happy? I know he's not exactly a Peter Bergman or Tony Geary but I like him.

ETA: I would not, however, be averse to her testing with that hot-ass cop who was on the other day. "Detective Price," who could easily be related to the Price family. They could Roger Howarth him and give him a contract - I mean, Ford got one.

At this point I would just be happy if she stayed on the show and got a decent storyline. I like her with Cris. Fumero has always been reliable when he gets the chance, and he has more chemistry with Tika than he's had with anyone since Melissa Archer. He's never been a great actor but he's a lot easier to watch than most of the OLTL guys in his age range.

I would like that, it would be so easy to integrate him with the rest of the cast, he could become John's best friend and what not. I hope they do it, because if they even push Greg Layla's way I will be furious.

I would much rather see Greg tested with Tea, but she only loves Todd.

Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves...

I was born in the wagon of a travelin' show

My mama used to dance for the money they'd throw

Papa would do whatever he could

Preach a little gospel

Sell a couple bottles of Doctor Good

CHORUS:

Gypsies, tramps and thieves

We'd hear it from the people of the town

They'd call us gypsies, tramps and thieves

But every night all the men would come around

And lay their money down

Picked up a boy just south of Mobile

Gave him a ride, filled him with a hot meal

I was sixteen, he was twenty-one

Rode with us to Memphis

And papa woulda shot him if he knew what he'd done

Chorus

I never had schoolin' but he taught me well

With his smooth southern style

Three months later, I'm a gal in trouble

And I haven't seen him for a while

I haven't seen him for a while

She was born in the wagon of a travelin' show

Her mama had to dance for the money they'd throw

Grandpa'd do whatever he could

Preach a little gospel

Sell a couple bottles of Doctor Good

I really love Cris and Layla but I hesitate with them. I'd like to see the show love them too so of course I'd like to see them to stay together and be happy. Layla got me around to liking Cris again and now I like him well enough after hating him with Evangeline. Always knew he would have been better off with Layla but they need a story that is their story and not propping a teenager so I'd say yes to the new cop going into their orbit but knowing RC he would come back as Ford Part II and Layla would turn into Langston. They just need to be integrated into the cast and not so isolated and in a good story of their own.

I love me some Chris & Layla, while we're talking about couples and the effects they have, nothing made me more happier than knowing after McLame dumped Marty for his precious Snatchalie. And while he was scavenger hunting for her...

She was busy boarding the O'Brody ship. Gotta admit they were hot.

I never thought Evangeline and Cristian had much chemistry, but I thought the actors did their best to sell it and I thought DF in particular really sold Cristian's devotion. Unfortunately Evangeline treated him like [!@#$%^&*] just as she did R.J. That didn't sit well with me, and IIRC it didn't sit well with Renee Goldsberry either, who always seemed much more keenly attuned to her character's flaws than the show ever dared be. Unfortunately, IMO, she didn't imbue the character with any layers to play against the two-dimensional material. Evangeline was simply Marcia Brady to Layla's Jan.

What I like about Layla is not only Tika Sumpter, who proved her in recent years, but the fact that Layla was always the little sister, second-best, and her life is not perfect or sanctified. She has a failed acting career, she apparently lost all the money from her successful fashion line, she's working an office job, she and Cris both do a 9 to 5, and she is clearly looked down upon by her domineering mother, who expected much less from her than from Evangeline. Likewise, at times Layla seemed to chafe under both her mother's expectations and the glare off Evangeline's halo, the latter being a subject the show only rarely dared touch upon lest anyone think Evangeline was anything less than perfect. But these are all real issues people can relate to, whereas I found virtually nothing relatable about Layla's perfect sister.

Anyone who knows me knows I had very little use for Evangeline when she was on the show. I thought the character was a plastic saint played by a so-so actress whose airtime in a series of lame stories she couldn't carry was held up as an excuse by ABC for not giving any other African-American actors any actual storylines. But right now, I'd bring her back. She is the obvious missing element in the Cristian/Layla story arc. Until you resolve the issues with Layla's family, you have not done it justice. If these characters were not people of color, the show would've brought Van back and dealt with it long before now. I'd bring Van back, and let her trauma have transformed into a not terribly nice person, loosing the impulses always lurking beneath the character's placid surface - let her try to grind Layla into the dirt, try to take Cristian back, take her throne back as princess of the family. She would fail, but in doing the story you have actualized Layla's character, given her real depth, and, if REG can actually play it, you'd have another unique character on the canvas, a solid schemer - and if you brought Rachel back, which I would, that would be three distinct AA female characters.

I've said I wanted to see Layla do Fraternity Row because I like the idea of her acting career, and the possibility of all sorts of dark secrets from her troubled days in L.A. I'd take that a step further and have her start some sort of theatre company in Llanview to channel her artistic passion. I don't think there's been one of those on the show since the days of Andrew and Megan's ghost in 1992. But now I'm just being esoteric.

The closest I remember is when Patrick was doing the community theater at Angel Square and Todd burned down the set.

Someone should pitch all this to Frons -- if Thorsten Kaye is involved he'd go for it.

Yes, that's the obvious solution! Patrick can be involved! Except this time he's doing it as a front for his government black op sting mission to bust Eli, who is in fact an evil hitman! I'm a genius! Where's my contract for a soon-to-be-cancelled show?
