I have to look for her name They "punished" her for coming up with a terrible story idea by making her one of the writers. If I hadn't worked in the entertainment industry (not soaps) I would be skeptical of this story. But, yeah, sounds about right. 😂

He said he and the writers fought against it, lost, and had to tell the best story they could. The hilarious part is, when the shoe's cancelation was announced, so many sites wrote articles. On one news site, viewers wrote in giving their opinions of what led to the cancelation. A lot blamed Rauch because of the clone. Rauch actually jumped on the site and responded with what I wrote at the beginning. Btw, I remember tv guide said that the CBS executive who pushed the story on the show was demoted to the show's writing team when the ratings didn't go on. I have to look for her name I remember that now! I don't think the clone story got GL canceled, by any means, but I think it helped derail their momentum. I would have to give a very long list for what got GL canceled. The show was a survivor. It lasted a hell of a long time, almost miraculously so. The only other soap that lasted as long with so much damage done to its core was AW, and GL lived twice as long as AW. Edited November 4Nov 4 by DRW50
November 4Nov 4 Member I can sorta believe Rauch being against the clone story. Even at its' wackiest (and that's including the time-travel [!@#$%^&*] - which, as I understand, got seriously derailed by the WGA strike and did not air as originally written), Rauch's OLTL still had at least one foot in reality.

I wonder how he felt about the time travel painting story. Maybe by that point he decided why not.

November 4Nov 4 Member @alwaysAMC you mentioned that you dig Michelle and Jesse, which couples do you like and which ones are you not feeling? Also which characters do you like most and dislike most? Personally, I was a Bloss fan. I thought Jenna was Buzz's best pairing- sorry Nadine. At the time I was rooting for Beth and Phillip to reunite. 1998 Neth is so different from 80s Beth- she's a b-word vixen. While Phillip and Harley are a cute couple, Harley's next long term coupling is better. I was never into Mattessa. Cassie and Hart are pretty good together, but I feel bad for Dinah being the town pariah. Of course, she caused it by aways being selfish and entitled. She's long forgotten her circus roots. Side note related to off-scrern characters beinb in stasis, when India returns in 2000s she mentions that Dorie was getting ready to get married. Also, Amanda is briefly mentioned in 2004 as she left Roger at some point, but AFAIK he was still at Spaulding West until the near end. Its a shame that Alan-Michael and Lucy didn't have children off-screen. When you circle back to the 90s, I want to recommend some jumping on points.. the Summer of 1990. I'd say start after reva leaves, but you'd miss the Roger/Holly Acapulco plot that runs concurrent to Reva's exit- and since you like that pairing, I think you'll enjoy it. Also around Feb 1991 after a bunch of established characters leave (Chelsea, Beth, Phillip, Rick and Josh), a soft reset in ways. Edited November 4Nov 4 by Spoon

GL was spared cancel territory in the 1980s because Capitol showed no growth and B&B wasn't a hit right away. GL was not in a good place creatively in June 1994 (the start of OJ). I'd say GL was effectively over in the aftermath of OJ but somehow kept going until 2009. Do many here feel that GL limped along for its final 15 years?

As always, I don't presume to speak for all GL fans...but yes, I do feel the show limped along for the last 15 or so years. It rallied somewhat when James Harmon Brown and Barbara Esensten returned as HW's. Even then, however, I felt the quality of the writing was not on par with its' many golden ages (the Dobsons, Marland, Pam Long, Curlee/Demorest/Broderick/Reilly). As I always say, ATWT's cancellation was the real tragedy, because I felt that show still had SOME life left in it. GL's cancellation, on the other hand, was the definition of a mercy killing.

November 4Nov 4 Member Limped.... I don't think it limps until '00, or whenever the San CristoHELL stories start. There is still good storytelling from '94-'99 in fits and spurts. And there's still a good core of actors anchoring the show. (Even though honestly, I have no desire to watch it, which seems like a contradiction.) When they tried to make make Reva into some fairytale Princess, and then subbed in Cassie--it's the ship listing dangerously. Springfield suddenly isn't Springfield, it's San Christohell North. You start losing actors, getting bad recasts and stunt casting (ugh..Ricky Paull Goldin is my personal low benchmark and then there's Nancy St. Alban...ICK)
November 4Nov 4 Member In a way, GL was like KNOTS LANDING: it lasted as long as it did, because CBS (or P&G) kept forgetting to cancel it, lol.
November 4Nov 4 Member I think certain stories kept GL viewers' interest post OJ's trial: Annie's machinations and Brett/Marian for example, but I think viewers kept watching out of loyalty until the show slapped them in the face once too often. The same thing happened with Another World.
