It was then that CBS put it out in public that they wanted Bill Bell to create a new soap to replace GL, etc. & this showed up in an LA Times 1996 article that referred to this happening the prior year. To be clear, Bell did no such thing. P&G and CBS fought it out verbally & came up with "suggested" changes to production, etc. It was 1995 when they did the EP shuffle moving one EP to AW, another to GL & the last to ATWT

That's probably pretty close. Springfield 1986 is teeming with unlikeable people (Sally, Jackson Freemont, Calla) and imposters (faux Phillip, Ed (VanVleet, God bless Ellen Parker for not just running for the hills) Alex in her Heidi-hair era, whoever the hell Simon is). And drips like Maeve and Jessie.

It's just ugh. And Johnny and Chelsea must be on the way soon. *double ugh*

He was awful. I've never seen anyone laughably overacting trying to be bad ass. I think he tried channeling Zas and missed, horribly.

I'm sure you probably already know this, but just in case, Labine at GL was one of those cases where every single idea the writer pitched, was turned down. Then to add insult to injury, after Rauch fired her & her kids, he couldn't find anyone at all to come do the HW job so he called Claire & asked her if they'd come back & finish out the year, or whatever. Anyway, amazingly, she agreed. 

Mae, the cigarette girl is amusing to me because everyone I know disliked the character, at a minimum, including me, but it's the one thing, the ONLY thing that Labine said she actually enjoyed writing while at GL. I find a bit of irony in that. 

I would've given anything to see what she'd have done writing what she pitched for a romantic attraction between Holly & Olivia.

Agreed that 1986 was an awful year for GL, for all the reasons you mentioned. It's also the year that the show went through a head writer change every couple of months, starting off with Pam Long and Jeff Ryder, then Ryder writing solo, then Mary Ryan Munisteri and Ellen Barrett, then Joseph D. Manetta, and finally Manetta and Sheri Anderson. It also feels like the year when the radical decisions they made back in 1983--getting rid of many long-term characters--really came back to bite them, as many of the hot young actors they'd built up as the show's next-generation stars left in 1984 and 1985. At least they got Chris Bernau and Robert Newman back by the end of 1986, but they probably should have brought back even more of the show's early 80s cast rather than bogging us down with duds like Calla.

The show was such a mess before this that any writer would have a hard time trying to fix it. I did like that they tried to show Danny and Chele's relationship was bad, tried to break them up and I actually loved Aunt Meta vs. Claire.  I never understood Rauch's determination to turn Reva into that normal mom, beloved figure. You're right, it never played to Zimmer's strengths and it didn't help that they dressed her like the Insurance Agent she played on Seinfeld.

Was 1986 really worse than 1988? For most of that year, I found the show's writing and plotting to be rather weak and uninteresting. If it weren't for some of the actors and especially Michelle Forbes, I would have given up. Was this during the writer's strike? Is that why it was such an illogical mess at times? I can never remember but I'm assuming so since AW also had the same type of mediocre writing/plotting.

1988 was the writer's strike, which contributed to why the Sonni/Solita story is such a convoluted quagmire.

I can't really evaluate though...I haven't ventured further than the first few weeks in January. Maeve leaves and I'm outta there. I do know it's the year Phillip goes full on [!@#$%^&*] and impregnates Rick's wife. Which I will never understand.

1984-1986 main cast departures off the top of my head: Chris Bernau, Robert Newman, Grant Aleksander, Vincent Irizarry, Judi Evans. If any are missing, please add.

1988 writers strike was March 7 to August 7, so almost half of 1988 was strike material.

Many thought 1991 was going to be a rough year with the departures of Kim Zimmer in July 1990 and Pamela Long in December 1990, and the cast purge in the early months of 1991 (Grant Aleksander, Beth Chamberlain, Kassie DePaiva, Robert Newman, Michael O'Leary). I thought 1991 was very good even though the ratings in the first half of the year didn't reflect the quality of the show.

It's odd--I would consider Zimmer and Aleksander major losses and true fan favorites, yet I on rewatch, I barely notice their absence. I consider mid'89-mid'93 almost perfectly balanced in terms of character and story. If you tallied figures, maybe '86 and '91 are similar in terms of new characters, but '91 doesn't feel forced at all.

    • Maeve makes a few sporadic appearances, but returns full-time the next spring/summer. She's back in time to see Bill and Michelle graduate, although she skulks around town and wasn't going to tell anyone she was alive.
    • Aww, yeah it's very heartbreaking and I mostly enjoyed the Nola/Vanessa scenes because they finally let their walls down and came together in a beautiful moment. So Nola was at the hospital already and bumped into Vanessa, who had MRI papers that fell out of her hand and Nola went down to pick them up and asked her what was going on. Later, Vanessa confided in her about her disease. Then, Nola told Zachary on the beach (he prodded her and already alluded to knowing something was going on with Van), and then Vanessa found out she told him and got a little upset. Now, however, Nola is strangely absent while everyone is mourning her death. I'm curious if Nola will actually tell people about her MRI results. I would assume so. Only Nola, Rick, Roger and Zachary know anything, although there is the MRI results letter from the mail that everyone has missed seeing at home. I'm sure it'll all come out at some point. But... I just saw the next episode and the opening already cut Vanessa out and added Dahlia and Zachary. I guess Maeve is gone for a long time

       That will break my heart seeing the town continue to mourn her and assume she's dead. I can't wait to see her return though, and I have to imagine feelings will be torn between loving that she's alive and being very angry she did all of this. While I hate what Vanessa is doing, I'm happy to hear it's not totally against her character. I think you're right, had Henry still been around, she wouldn't put him through this. I'm still surprised she is with Bill, though. I get her feelings on Matt, because she wants him to move on, but still very heartbreaking. I'm glad this was Maeve's choice to have a break vs. being fired.    Interesting, so I'm curious to see who they eventually pair Phillip with. They're flirting with a Phillip/Annie pairing, but I'm not sure if they'll go that route with the Jeva drama, her growing pill addiction, and Rick's past with her.  Ugh, yeah I'm so sad to see Bridget do a total 180 in the last couple weeks. She has always been a strong character from what I've seen, but now she's just bending over backwards to get Hart to love her and it reeks of desperation. Yeah, sure, this new Hart is eye candy, but I'm already tired of seeing Hart/Dinah have sex all over Springfield and the Cayman Islands haha.
    • Yes.  I remember them together during the early summer of 1986.  They didn't share scenes again for 30 years until 2017 because Carrie wasn't on the show when Anna returned during Sydney's kidnapping.
    • I can see Kim being that way. Well, Kyle didn't have to say yes. LOL. The suicide attempt feels plot-driven. I don't know if even Long could've made it work. She'd spent so much time trying to make Reva and Kyle into a couple, it feels odd to just have them give up. Not to mention how odd it is to have Maeve agree to marry him. Re Charita---surely they could've at least tried  finding clips with who was still there. Maybe they wouldn't have been "big" moments, but surely she'd interacted with Ross, Vanessa, and Henry. Vanessa had dated Ed, FCOL. But Mo and Rick were there---surely they could've bothered to find some clips of her with them (and they did interact a fair amount) and used them. And with Ed they could've found some shot of her talking to him and just not cut to whoever was playing Ed in the clip. That to me is what feels lazy---they had more than a year to figure it out, and they went with a bunch of photos. If you were sort of centering it on Rick anyway---then find clips with them and use 'em.
    • I definitely think it's time to write off Nina for good. I think her killing Drew might actually be a good idea. She could completely lose it after losing both Sasha and Willow and she ends up murdering Drew and eventually she gets caught and sent away to prison for a long time.

    • Quick question - did Christie and Leann share any scenes together in the '80s before Leann left the show?
    • This is the perfect way to encapsulate the situation. So many morally-reprehensible stories were foisted on the show and its characters in ATWT's dwindling years. Rape should never be used as a cheap plot device or in a way that degrades the victim. Jack's sexual assault was another heinous example of how nasty the the show's tone had become. The fact that people like Hogan Sheffer, Ron Carlivati, Jean Passanante, Charles Pratt, Dena Higley, etc., somehow end up winning awards for their material, decimates the credibility and integrity of the awards, IMHO. Soaps used to have a solid moral core and did not originally wallow in the gutter, rolling around in filth and depravity just to be cool, hip, campy, or whatever else modern-day PTB aim for. Thank you. Cruelty, degradation and misogyny are not components which lend themselves to successful soaps, which have always been predicated on warmth, family bonds, and providing a comforting haven for their audience. The genre has been crippled because the cynical and ignorant executives in charge understand neither the shows nor what the audience wants to see.
