I do agree that Marland wasn't the end all, be all of head-writers. He had his strengths especially with writing a community and being able to be a great breakdown writer and pacing. However, he always wanted to introduce a lower income/working class family onto his show while also featuring a teen romance as well at the same time.

I think Marland's creation of the Reardon's was better then the Snyders at least at intergrating the family into the fabric of the show.

Plus, I thought Pam Long wrote the Reardon's just as good as Marland did. I do agree she didn't quite get Nola/Quint.. but in her defense, they were kind of losing their uniqueness before she'd shown up to be head-writer. Though I think she wrote Nola way better then she did Quint. Plus, she gave Tony more layers as well.

If what you said about the actress not agreeing with Hope being an alcoholic is true.. then I can see why she was fired. Hope being an alcoholic totally made sense given the toxic state of her marriage to Alan and having a young child causing her stress. Plus, her uncle and grandfather were alcoholics.. and addiction is genetic as well as environmental. I think Pam Long had a great handle on Hope's character, and I forsaw having a War of the Roses story brewing between Alan/Hope.. and I could have easily seen Alexandra being an ally against Hope especially if Alan was threatening to keep Alan Michael from her.

You also mentioned the actress playing Hilary having writing aspirations?? Did the actress want to write on the show, or was she trying to dictate story? It looked like the show flirted with Fletcher/Hilary.. as well as hint at a Tony/Annabelle/Jim/Hilary quadangle before Hilary was killed off. Killing Hillary kind of doomed Jim's character and he was written off a few short months later (or did the actor choose to leave). It's a shame the show killed Hillary because she would have been useful in 1988/1989 when Roger/Holly came back into the picture due to her ties to them.

Was Eve trying for a Didi Conn lookalike contest?

So Rita, like Morgan a year later, was undone by lying over stolen jewelry. I wonder if Marland was trying to warn ladies.

Alan is terrible at hiding his affairs. Wow. He's lucky Diane was so in love with him she couldn't see the obvious. Why did she even think he was talking to Rita?

Nice to see Rita. I almost forgot who she was at first as it had been a while. This must be the closest material to her exit that has been on Youtube.

Nola's scheming is so inept. You have to go to dinner with me and my mom because...I dunno, it's bad and awful if you don't!

Morgan looks so young here.

Vanessa is in fiddle-dee-dee wardrobe mode. And Joe's hair is too long. I had no idea Ed and Vanessa were close at this point.

Maybe I am overprotective of Nola but I can't stand Hilary and Katie. Or Kelly and that drip, Morgan. So glad that Nola went on to become Mrs. Chamberlain while the rest of them went on to do nothing. Kelly left town alone after Claire broke his heart. Morgan left without Kelly after being deemed a harlot. Katie faded into irrelevancy. Hilary was blown to smithereens. :P Floyd went to prison.

*sighs*

Nola is WINNING. :lol:wub.png

Can anyone tell who is doing the VO for this episode? It's not the usual guy.

Milette Alexander is such a great actress - I love Sara's shock when Nola says she's been lovers with Kelly for months.

I like Hilary and Katie but I don't care for all the Nola focus. It's just repetitive and one-note. And it's distracting, because at this time Katie was with a man who beat her, yet she's still just given material talking about Nola. I can see why Denise Pence was not happy by this point.

She mentions it briefly in the third clip. This is one of the things Denise Pence was unhappy with as she thought it made Katie a miserable character.

Andy was so ridiculously arrogant and nasty. In a way kind of a waste of a Norris. I'm glad they didn't go the same route with Ross, even if Jerry ver Dorn plays sleazy well (and I like his hair here...)

I love the work from Geraldine Court (Jennifer) when she leaves Morgan's hospital room.

Alan and Rita seem oddly chaste.

Ben gives Ross a beatdown, and Eve gets a beatdown from her doily! Dangerous times at the Copper Lantern.

I guess this is more typical of the era but Katie and Hilary both seem a little blase about Andy being violent toward Katie.

I love Vanessa but she's so artificially twee at this point it's amazing Ed didn't see through it.

Steven Jackson! I wonder if this was his last appearance.

Alan and Rita seem so oddly detached, especially since both of their marriages were blown up over this.

Did Rick in later years ever bring up his grandfather or any of his Jackson roots? Was it mentioned that Dr. Jackson had passed onscreen?

Speaking of Alan and Hope's affair, I still hate that Gus was not Rita's son. It would've stuck to the canon and would've opened up so many possibilities. Rita returning at that time would've given Ed, Alan, and even Holly so much to do.

    • I am interested to see how they handle Leslie/Dana down the road. If she continues in this path, it would be unrealistic to have her around. Like other shows have done this with a 'villian' character and ended up with people looking stupid putting up with someone they detest. Another thought-could they be building up to a murder story? Maybe Les/Dan will be left in a coma and we will have a whodunit with several characters as suspect. It would also be a chance to redeem her I wonder how long the show will go w/o resorting to soap cliche stories-twins,switched at birth, murder mystery, long lost child etc
    • Yeah, Martin really did make me laugh when him and Smitty jumped up to drag Leslie out. I am interested in seeing how this fallout will impact his storyline as well. Especially since he is so protective regarding his family/family's image. I am interested in seeing how he will interact with Eva for the time being, they did have a warmer interaction earlier on once they met. But he seems to have doubts about her possibly being Ted's right now. I wonder how long it might take for him to come around with her. I could see the younger generation warming up to her quicker than the older ones. Though of course I think there will be anger/tension for a while regarding the reveal and her role in it. Perhaps Naomi/Chelsea will ease up on Eva first then eventually Martin/Kat might down the line. I really do love Nicole. I'm glad that DD is playing her. She really is the heart of the family and also agree the show. She is so easy to root for and I'm looking forward to seeing how things work out for her. I am enjoying the development of most of the characters on this show. I enjoy most of them including Bill with his trifling self lol. I do feel that Bill's love for his daughters is genuine and that gives him some depth. A few of the characters I don't care for that much (like Bill, Ashley, Vanessa). I wasn't too big on Andre at first, but I am warming up more to him as the actor is settling into the role. I like most of the characters on this show. Also, I am interested in seeing what happens if Eva indeed goes and lives with the new doctor that was introduced. I could see this adding another layer to her story, maybe she will become more vixen-ish, on what type of relationship they end up having. And/or maybe she will end up becoming more hardened as she deals with being an outcast, especially if she falls out with Leslie as well. I think that AM will do a good job of showcasing the different layers of this character as she deals with the fallout of the affair/paternity reveal.

Got another sad news from the Bahamian community (not a celebrity)  https://www.instagram.com/p/DJMSrYCgyes/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== Former Bahamian Senate President J Henry Bostwick, Husband of former 1st Bahamian Female Cabinet Minister Dame Janet Bostwick is dead yesterday on his 86th birthday.    Thanks and for those who've aren't familiar with the talk shows in The Bahamas on this thread here, his talk show named The Freedom March with Dr Rodney Moncur that airs on ILTV and The Beat 103.5 FM Nassau every weekday afternoons. IIRC, he suffered a illness before he died.  Here's the link for his final taping of the show before his death: https://ewnews.com/this-is-powerful-rodney-moncurs-final-sign-off/

    • One thing I thought about is if Hayley will have a reaction to Bill threatening to kidnap and sell a baby. That's another level of viciousness and with her just having thought she was pregnant it might make her feel some type of way.
    • You're welcome. Fall 1982-Spring 1985 was the peak of primetime soaps. What a time to have been alive.
    • 1990/91 Cheers, Roseanne, A Different World, The Cosby Show, Empty Nest, The Golden Girls were still Top 10 shows, and Murphy Brown and Designing Women became Top 10 shows. It was the following season that I think was the transition season for sitcoms.
    • @xtr I loved Martin in Thursday's episode, he was almost a different character. I thought he was flirty, funny, carefree, and giggly. Glad I have someone to share my top 2 women(Nicole and Eva) with, I agree Nicole is the heart of the Dupree family, and also the heart of the show IMO. We rode into the show on the passenger side of her car, lol. What I am enjoying the most about the show, is that they did such a great job character building, because all I care about is the CHARACTER journey. Nicole, Eva, Leslie, Dani, Chelsea, etc. very invested in what's coming next. I even feel that way about Mona, Shanice, and Doug.
    • I know we have discussed the fact that Another World seemed to be planning a location shoot in Finland that got cancelled. I came across this item from the syndicated Soapbox column published June 14, 1982. "Soap operas have been experimenting extensively with on-location shooting in recent years to enhance storylines and increase their viewing audience. A major drawback is the added production costs involved. Another World, for example, cancelled a special trip for Victoria Wyndham (Rachel Cory on the show), who was scheduled to shoot scenes in Finland. The producers felt that the high price tag, along with resentment of the cast members who also wanted to travel but were to be left behind. was enough to scrap the whole project."
