Sherry Mathis seems to be a bright side of the show in the 80s.. where it went through so many writers and changed tones like people changed clothes.

The sad thing is that even if the show had a consistent tone and writing team.. it still would have been doomed because of P & G being stubborn in 1982, NBC picking it up and putting it in a time slot known for preemptions and ranking third (in the areas that did air it).   Part of me thinks it probably would have been better to have ended it in 1982 since we would have been spared the obnoxious McCleary clan... but I'm sure there were some golden nuggets and scenes that would have been missed if that had happened.

I'd love to see his work from SFT. From everything I've read, the Jo/Sam love story was one of the greatest the show ever had. When Robert Mandan left the show to move to LA, I've read that neither of the Sam recasts had even a fraction of the chemistry with Mary Stuart that he'd had. Thus, the creation of Dr. Tony Vincente, who Jo would ultimately marry.

George Gaynes, the first recast, was a comedown from Robert Mandan. He lacked the charm Mandan had had, and after a while it was clear that Sam Reynolds was no longer a viable long-term romantic partner for our Jo. BTW, I found Gaynes to be rather wooden on GH too.

When Robert left.Sam left on a trip and then was reported missing.

They decided to recast and when that wasn't working out,Sam went crazy and was killed off.

I'm sure fans of the couple weren't pleased with the resolution to that story.

Later, Anthony George leaving forced the writers to kill him off.

Had he not left, I wonder what story Jo and Tony would have had throughout the 70's?

    • You're really in for it, because those rants continue for 3 episodes. I was struck by how ho-hum those cliffhangers were. It was like the writers ran out of gas.

    • Thank you for the clarification, but Susan didn't name her child after David.  It was Julie who named her son David.   And how/when was Susan's son killed?  And didn't Susan kill David Martin and stand trial for his murder?
    • I truly wish we could see more of her work on DAYS. And more of her early stuff on GH, but at least we know that Corday’s DAYS vault is virtually complete, especially compared to GH. Lesley was a pivotal character. I think the scenes with the confrontation with Monica are so good because there is a lot of character in those lines and performances. Monica is ferocious, desperate. And Lesley is not a victim, she holds her own and calls Monica out, playing her own form of anger. Evenly matched. Soap confrontations have largely forgotten that both sides should be evenly matched, even if someone has wronged another. To me, that scene is easily in my soap hall of fame. They didn’t make enough of her return, which has always bothered me. I would have loved for her to end up vying for control of the hospital when Alan was incapacitated by drugs, helping him through that crisis and finding herself at odds with Monica again on a different level, not as romantic rivals. She had such a long career! Acting in radio shows as a little kid, through her GH spots as few years ago. That’s quite a ride.
    • Damn I was hoping Lesley would be at Monica's memorial  Hoping GH gives Lesley an on screen memorial
    • Today's episode was serviceable, but the cliffhangers were disappointing!
    • I just got to the first set of Dante ranting at Gio episodes and I really need him to shut the hell up. Gio literally was at the party with people his own age and didn’t even know Dante’s kid snuck out to a party. Talking about I could charge you for serving a minor? This is just really stupid writing.
    • Back up a bit. Susan & Julie were best friends. Tom thought David too old for Julie & forbade her to see him. They continued but they had to sneak around.  So they couldn't always get together when they wanted to. One of THOSE nights David got drunk. At the same time for different reasons Susan had a huge fight with her parents, slammed out the door & went & also got drunk. David & Susan comforted each other & things took their usual course From that one  drunken night, Susan got pregnant. The 3 made a joint decision. He would marry her to give the child his name & then they would divorce. Is it any wonder this did not go according to plan. Bill Bell wrote this. So best friends became bitter enemies.   I am the exception because I had no problem suspending my disbelief to go along with the LaSalles. I love Marisa as much as I loved Mary. Reginald, always a problem to me, And, Robert Hogan had to be Vince. WhIle I'm at it I am glad that didn't do anything with making Scott a triplet.
