GL: August discussion

LOL. He has charisma already, so I don't understand why he overdoes it, Zimmer-style. In that screen cap, it's like "You've already got a gun. You are shooting at people. You don't NEED to out-act the gun. It is doing all the acting for you."

The constant overacting from Tom Pelphrey was one of the reasons I gave up on GL for several years. I never saw a character, I just saw the mugging and tics. I'm sure he is a good actor but I thought GL did not use him at his best abilities.

LMAO, out-acting a gun, that is such a Kim Zimmer thing to do, he learned from the best. I was reading an interview TP did and he was saying how he realized that he'll never be one of the actors he looks up to/emulates and might as well be himself, and I thought, "Yes, YES, I am so glad to hear him say that." I always thought he was good but I thought his performances were tricky and classic hotshot kid from acting school, trying to be Brando, Nicholson, Penn, Malkovich all rolled into one.

DAVID ANDREW MACDONALD [ Edmund] was listed in the cast today at the end of GL - however they put him after Grant Aleksander [Phillip] - so I am guessing they think David last name is Andrew, but I am glad to see DAM listed in the cast - just wish we could see him there longer and watch GL longer.

GL HOTLINE: 866 - 695 - 1859

When TP first came on the show Jonathon was sex on a stick....and I am not into younger guys or the bad boys or the grungy types, but he just gave off the energy that he would f*ck anyone at anytime. Then, maybe his exposure to Zimmer and her idea that "bigger is better," he just became this monkey boy bouncing around, screaming and yelling and of all things, whineing about his childhood. The funny thing is, the louder a soap actor is, (Zimmer,Deas and TP) the more the people on the boards go and on about what great "actors," they are!

Love the pictures, sums up Wheeler's GL to a T and should be given as an example of why GL is dead!!!

Caught today's show - well half of it anyway.

It really bothers me that they haven't done away with those random meetings that take place in the middle of (seemingly) nowhere. And that crappy music! It takes away every dramatic tone of the scene. Last complaint - the scenes between the characters are too freakin' short. Phillip/Lizzie lasted what? 5-8 minutes? Mallet/Marina (not that I care about them) 5-8 minutes? And they were discussions that I really wanted to see happen!

Phillip mentioned casually about "all the bad things he's done". And Lizzie was like "Yeah". WTF?!?!? I want to see Lizzie confront him about them. Ask him WHY he did those things. Not just "Yeah". I don't really care about Mallet/Marina/Henry, but that discussion was way too short as well. Not that I would have paid attention to it, but too short nevertheless.

I have to say this again. Jeff Branson is a find. He's perfect as Shayne. I think that Y&R should lure him away as a recast Phillip "Chance" Chancellor and kick JD to the curb. I like John D, but Jeff would be much better. And the man is S.E.X.Y

They probably don't want a strong male lead in that role. Chance exists to be the boring guy who can never compare to Billy, the show's big hero.

I'm still way behind in watching the entire episodes, I've seen a few moments here and there but not entire episodes since early August.

I wish they'd done more with Dorothy Lyman.

I was surprised by how much I liked Dinah's exit (even though I hate that she had to be turned into the pariah again, it does fit her character -- as she said, "I ruin everything"), and how much I liked that so much of it was about her relationship with Mallet. I have never believed that Mallet loves the little garden gnome Marina, and his decision to all but try and convict Marina himself, while helping Dinah flee the country, was final proof. Her goodbye to Vanessa was touching, but I really was moved by that last scene of her in the helicopter as she said goodbye to Mallet and Springfield.

I think Branson is really sexy...he seems so different then the usual soap "hunk," (aka Cyrus) who either look like strippers or male models. He seems effortlessly masculine, and that voice!! However, I find Shayne completely unsexy and a whiner. They want me to believe Josh and Reva's kid is a mope who, when faced with a problem, immediatley goes to the nearest roof top to jump? Talk about a drama queen!

Holly/Olivia is interesting as Holly was the first choice to have this thing with Olivia. And how much more interesting would that have been then having Olivia with the wet rag known as Nat. One more bad choice on Wheeler's huge rap list. She could have brought MG back for this and it would have been HOT!!!

YES, Mitch. I agree completely - and the voice is  "Effortlessly masculine" is a great way to put it. Interesting take on Shayne - I haven't really noticed that before but can see your point. However, I had no idea that Holly was the first choice in the story with Olivia! Very interesting, indeed! I guess EW couldn't get MG back, so they went with Natalia?

Jill Lorie HACK at her finest. I was thinking the same thing to myself yesterday, particularly about Reva having hung up all those pictures of Jeffery - all over Cross Creek no less. WTF? And they actually had Reva say about her and Josh: "That's ancient history". WTF?

I was hoping that both of them (Jeffrey and Edmund) were actually dead and laying down there with G/Grady/Gillespie at the bottom of the cliff.

I would think at this point, there would be some momentum building to the end game. We should be seeing more of Holly and Ed's story in particular. And we should be in the middle of a Josh/Reva/Jeffrey triangle. Colin should turn out to be Josh's son. I don't like the thought of "Reva Shayne" being forever tied to rapist Jeffrey with a baby. Ugh. I would like to see something start to develop for Blake and Alex as well.

Don't get me wrong. I don't need everything tied up with a pretty little bow, but I'd like to see some story momentum now that we're in the 30 day stretch.

I thought the Olivia/Holly story was planned back when MG was still with the show. Does anyone know?

I wish they had used Edmund in a better fashion. He had chemistry with everyone. He even had great chemistry with Bradley Cole when Cole played Richard.

    • Very true...but TPTB all were desperate to get into prime time or films and couldn't, so they looked down on their own industry and tried to infuse themes that just didn't work in soaps. I would have thought after 9/11 the shows would have gone out of their way to provide that warmth and comfort that the audience wanted, and to bring old viewers back. Budget cuts? Just bring back kitchen sets, both ATWT and GL got rid of those besides one each..(the Snyders and the Bauers) You don't need super fancy sets if you have the writing.
    • LMAO they didn't

    • LY has a job on another show. She's going to be on the Legally Blonde prequel "Elle"
    • From what I can put together, the 1980s had several actors with interrupted runs. Michael Zaslow: 1971-1980, 1989-1997 Maureen Garrett: 1976-1980, 1988-?, ?-end Christopher Bernau: 1977-1984, 1986-1988 Peter Simon: 1981-1984, 1986-1996, ?-end Maeve Kinkead: 1981-1987, 1989-1996, 1997-end Robert Newman: 1981-1984, 1986-1991, 1993-end Jordan Clarke: 1983-1987, 1989-1993, 1996, 1997-end By 1989, I believe the longest-tenured cast member without a departure was Jerry verDorn.
    • I know they were popular, but once they tamed Van's shrew, I thought Billy just brought Van down. Since they had just Nola and Billy sitting around in 97, an interesting thing would be if they had developed a friendship that turned into something else while Van was "dead". Maybe Billy lives at the Boardinghouse (to work on repaing his relationship with Bill) and works at Company instead of the stupid diner. Nola and Bridget give him a job there and Nola and Billy (who had originally been a bit antagonistic) slowly build up a relationship and then Van returns. A returned new lease on life Van would return to her "high hat ways" and take on the Spaulding's for control of the company with Billy helping her behind the scenes.  I know that Jordan was on sporadically because of his issues and them not know if they could trust him not to fall of the wagon, but they could have done it slow..and give Van and Nola a new reason to get in each others hair (I love a good Van/Nola tussle.)

Perhaps it wasn't the most well-played match in history, but that's something no one will remember in a few years time.
    • The thing with Martin (for me) is that he should have been Anita and Vernon's kid. I honestly think he would have been fine being an older or younger brother to Dani and Nicole. It also would have made his relationship and kids feel more realistic. A handsome salt and pepper late 40s/early 50s congressman who settled down and adopted kids to fit an image for politics. Not that he didn't want this lifestyle but it is what he needed to do to get ahead. Also, we don't often get older characters playing LGBT roles not just on daytime but across most media. It would have been a refreshing take. As an alternative, Sam and Ty could have been Martin's kids from an earlier marriage a la the NJ governor that was outed. We could have also seen parallels between Vernon and Anita thinking back to how they handled Martin coming out compared to the way they accepted Chelsea.  As for Martin being Nicole and Ted's kid, I do wish in this case he was not tied to a marriage and kids, so that he could date and sleep around like any other character on a soap.  Yeah, I didn't get it...but what I did get is that girl is a bit crazy like her mama.  Vanessa and Joey talking about the poker table...get these people off my screen.

    • Unpopular opinion, but I didn't think the show should have reunited Billy/Vanessa at all until the final stretch of the show. When watching the 1989 episodes when both Vanessa and Billy return after being off the show... I liked that Vanessa had moved on from him and that the show was hinting at her wanting to reunite with her first love Ross while looking down at Nadine for being the one Ross was dating.  And I loved the twist where Billy and Nadine teamed up to keep Vanessa/Ross apart.   This was an interesting concept that sadly the writers dropped with the show deciding to make Vanessa pine over Billy between 1990 and 1993 when they finally reunited.   To me, Vanessa pining over Billy seemed out of character. At least once Billy was carted off to prison in 1994... she and Billy divorced and stayed divorced until the final months when they finally found their way back together.  During the years when they were divorced, I liked that they had maintained a friendship and connection.. with viewers (like my late mom) wondering if they would ever decide to make it work again. I wish the show had tried that with Josh/Reva because by the time of the final episode when they rode off into the sunset, I didn't care because we'd been through the make up and break ups between them for over 10+ years by that point.
