Y&R: Potpourri Thread

This crap was the jump the shark moment for this regime. After it, the show wasn't the same and started the downward spiral it continues with creatively. It really should have been enough to get this horrible writing regime canned.

Hi! New poster--long-time lurker. Thanks for starting this topic Y&RWorldTurner. Love your posts--you put the majority of my thoughts into words. The current state of this show is simply pitiful to say the least and it saddens me as a long-time viewer to what it has been reduced. Part of my day includes watching Y&R but I only read the Canadian recaps in order to know whether to watch that day. I haven't been watching on a regular basis now for weeks. Previously, this show set itself aside from other soaps, screamed class and was the eqivalent of a prime-time show that I used to be proud to say I watched and recommend to others. I find the Adam/Ashley storyline completely revolting and the utter destruction of a core character with ties to the Newman sickening and a stellar performer like CE now gone as a result. Why couldn't they go the affair route since CE and ED have amazing chemistry? Everything these days is for shock value only it seems and not with any thought whatsoever into the longtime future of the character or storylines. I did not enjoy seeing Jack jump from Phyllis' bed right into MJ's either--gross! Where's the romance? All there currently is is a pair of 80 yr olds, although adorable, that's it--it's a soap opera for God sake!!! No romance, no friendships, no corporate business storylines, and to boot we have a character do a total 360 in personality (and they have given us no explanation or insight into his reasonings (although we can surmise) not good enough!) abusing a pregnant woman, cleaning up blood and a fetus--sorry not something I care to see! So disappointed!!

What fuels my frustration with the show's shoddy storytelling and characterization at the hands of MAB and co. is the interviews. I've read a bunch of interviews with actors--and at least two with MAB herself--where they essentially say the writing is amazing again, that MAB is channelling Bill Bell, and that he'd be proud of the trash that's being dished out. How delusional and/or lacking in self-awareness can they be?! How can we expect changes when they think everything is already sooo great? <_<

I know what you mean, those actors are just .

I remember the same people praising LML when she was there to the press. Seems to me the same people kiss so much ass to get storylines. But LML was fired, let's keep the faith that the same thing will happen to Maria Arena Bell, Hogan Sheffer, and Scott Hamner.

^It's a totally stupid that they keep actors that they have no intention of ever writing for. They're wasting core characters, and they're keeping many poor actors on that either just suck or are totally miscast.

People like Amelia Heinle, Tammin Suresucks, Eva Marcille, Judith Chapman, most of the Scobby Doo gang, as well as a few others need to either be recast or written OUT. A lot of characters on this show have worn out their welcome years ago. This all needs to be dealth with.

Oh my, but she IS channeling Bill Bell. You want to talk plot driven crap, shall I mention Brad in the cage? And I hate to tell you, I couldn't STAND the original Marge SL, you poeple didn't like Marcia Wallace as the comic foil, try Morey Amsterdam! . You had endless hours in the late 80's of men FAWNING over Cricket (It even made Terry Lester quit) . And WOW, the whole Paul against the Mob/Tony Disalvo, etc... it was so tedious and it dragged on FOREVER. And WAIT... Bill Bell's chipmunk... Robert Tyrone/Tyrone Jackson... paint a black man white and go undercover to infiltrate the mob through the mob boss' daughter. And of course... how many TIMES did I have to sit through Michael Damian singing? But on the other hand.. I knew if I waited around, Maitland would come out and sing, and all would be right with the world.. I just tuned him OUT. And honey, you want sick and twisted... You should have SEEN Victor when he held Michael Scott prisoner... I beleive that is the "Feeding people rats" thing that Braeden was referring to... but Ole Vic installed closed circuit cameras, and made Michael watch him screw Julia on a big screen TV. That was pretty perverted for 1980, to be sure. So... YES, she is channeling Bill Bell, he was brilliant, he also stepped in the dookie on more than one occasion. So there it is.

I called a while ago what I am sure is coming -- an upcoming baby switch. Ashley will get Sharon's baby. For this to happen, Mary Jane and Adam have to be turned into heinous freaks who somehow carry this out. For Adam to be able to carry this out, Ashley and Victor have to be written as total idiots. For MJ to want to get involved in the switch, Sharon has to say Jack is the dad. But Jack can't really be the dad because Shick has more fans than Shack. So Sharon has to be butchered to make this plot point happen. All of these characters are being sacrificed for a plot point. This is as bad as anything that LML has done.

The difference is, for every bad story, Bill Bell had an absolutely BRILLIANT story. MAB and company do not have any good or brilliant stories to help distract us from the bad. Some stories are marginally good, but her good is nowhere near comparable to Bill Bell's good, they shouldn't even be used in the same sentence together.

Cara mia... I truly HOPE that a baby switch does NOT happen. I, ME will even bust her chops if she does that. It's the most ridiculous, overdone thing on the PLANET. However... if she would pull out a surprise, like to have Adam TRY and do a baby switch and get caught in the act... now I could be up for something like that.

But pumpkin.... Bill Bell had 25 years as head writer, Maria's had what? 18 months? After 4 or 5 years, then I'd be prepared to pass judgement. This show has always had ebb and flow, last fall we had flow, now we have parital flow, partial ebb. The younger generation with their "Instant graitification" and "I want it all now" attitude is one reason why all these shows play musical head writers. Nobody has enough patience to give anyone a real chance. Bill Bell's SL's weren't very good for HIS first 18 months, you know... he wanted to cancel the show, but CBS had no show to replace it. If he hadn't had the brainstorm to hire Cooper and pit her against Dickson, Y&R would have just been another "Where the Heart Is".

I don't believe in saying "Everything is good" I just listed a TON of SL's in my previous posting that I HATED. But I just have some perspective, and realize that if there's SOMETHING worthwhile to watch, then I think it's worth my time. If you don't... then so be it. you take far more time bitching about teh show than it takes to actually sit through it, viagra commercials and all.
