Demo Changes from last year:

Women 18-49 Rating

1. Y&R 1.7 (same)

2. DAYS 1.4 (-.1)

3. B&B 1.2 (same)

4. AMC 1.1 (same)

4. GH 1.1 (-.6)

6. OLTL 1.0 (-.4)

7. ATWT 0.9 (-.1)

8. GL 0.7 (-.3)

I had forgotten how low AMC was at this time last year in the demo. It was at 1.1, while OLTL was at 1.4, and GH at 1.7. (GH lost more than a third of its 18-49 audience).

Soapnet is up, substantially in primetime, so some of these losses are viewers migrating to SoapNet. SoapNet was the 5th fastest growing cable net in primetime (AMC/OLTL/GH) this past year, with a 35% increase in the 18-49 demo during that time. (Still, GH's losses are inexcusable).

Sh!t...look at those GH demo falls. Sara Bibel's column to Brian Frons today is EXCORIATING, but so beautifully honest and reflective of what the UNIVERSE is saying at this point.

The question is this: Does Frons/Disney feel (as Nightline seemed to suggest) that the genre is gone...therefore these numbers are not their fault...and it lets them "move on".

Or, do they accept responsibility and take this as a warning sign? Everything in my gut says, sadly, it is the former.

WOW! Thanks, Carolyn! This truly is the all-important number for soap's survival, and it says so much. Mainly that AMC is not in as much trouble as its fans believe. Whatever they think of the stories, or what Pratt has done, the fact that it's holding its 18-49 demo means there probably won't be many changes anytime soon.

GH and OLTL, though... it's truly scary what's happening there.

And a second "WOW!" You weren't kidding, Mark. I don't think Sara's ever put her emotions out there as strongly as she did with today's entry. Sad thing is, she'll probably be disregarded by TPTB as a bitter former writer with an axe to grind, when in reality, she seems to understand what needs to be done (even though she claims she doesn't, humble as she is), better than anybody.

I've never gotten the impression that Frons or Disney really care that much. His job is to ensure ABCD is profitable and perhaps with their cost cutting, they are delivering acceptable profits. I'm still of the belief that the writing changes at AMC and OLTL had less to do with Frons realizing they needed to make a change versus the megastars on those shows being publicly vocal about the lackluster writing, almost embarrassing him into making a change.

But in today's world, profit is king. It's alll ABC cares about and I am sure the other networks are in general the same. But IMO it's not just ABCD that is suffering, their primetime lineup has been getting whipped by CBS for the last couple of years. Their desire to cater to the younger viewers, who don't and won't have time to invest substantially in anything IMO has been their achilles heal. While I think this works for cable stations who can have specialized viewing targets, a network station catering to this seems a little ludicrous. Of course maybe Fox has proved me wrong on that who knows. The advent of cable, on demand style viewing, the internet, internet viewing, and DVR's are all factors as well. I realize ABC has suffered the most in the past several weeks, but no soap even Y&R is really setting the world on fire ratingswise.

Mark, I read Sara Bibel's blog comment to Frons. I didn't come away agreeing with most of her opinions. The only thing that I agreed with is that ABC needs to revise its focus group questions. ABC cannot cherry pick the answers that they want from these groups and expect to get people's real opinions.

I do not trust the executive producers or head writers at ABC. I especially hope that Frons will never give free reign to Guza and Phelps. If Guza had no checks and balances, the mob would be 100% of GH. We would see murder mysteries at the hospital and shoot outs in the hospital lobby like on Night Shift 1. The remaining Qs would be dead in a couple months. Anyway, I didn't think that GH was that great under Guza in the 1990s. IMO, GH began its steady decline then. Phelps killed off Maureen Bauer and Frankie Frame. She would likely do the same thing to Alexis.

Despite all my rambling about GH's writing, I am not convinced that GH's recent ratings demo dip is completely about content. GH has been crap for years. Why are the viewers suddenly tuning out? I don't have a clue. By the end of sweeps, the demos could easily bounce back. If I was Frons I would not do anything until the demos for May sweeps come in. I doubt that Frons does anything regardless.

The only thing that I would if I was Frons is hire a co-headwriter or strong consultant to help reshape GH's stories which might help kill the predictability factor. If the demos do not rebound by November sweeps, if I was Frons, I would start looking for replacement programming for all the ABC soaps.

I never like to see a soap drop, but I LOVE IT, absolutely LOVE IT when GH drops. I am happy to see them out of the top 5 and quite honestly I have no shame in saying that. They truly deserve it.

After everything Frons and Guza did to their veteran cast, they are getting what they deserve. The mob garbage killed GH! The bottom like is, characters like Sonny, Jason, Claudia, Spanelli, Ethan, every recurring player involved with the mob, Sam, Jax, they all need to go.

Interesting points there regarding Guza and Phelps, Ann. I agree with you 100% about Guza, but Phelps on the other hand, I believe that if she was paired with a really good writer, GH would be a lot different. I don't think the majority of the Quartermaine family would be gone like it is today. I think the show would still be all about the hospital. As much of a hack as I always felt JFP was and is, I think she has learned from her past mistakes. The bottom line is, is that I don't see her producing a show that is a pile of sh!t when she has full control. GL under her was phenomenal, minus the death of Maureen Bauer. But like I already stated, she had an incredible writing team. With good writer's and JFP's production abilities, her GH could be great. We already know Guza is not a good writer.

I don't find myself agreeing with what Sarah Bibel said. Bob Guza was a decent writer when under management from a strong competent EP. I don't agree with leaving him to his own designs. He'd make GH 100 percent mob.

And as much as I dislike the show, they are trying to do some things right. It's been more balanced, there has been better family stuff, I don't think the PPD story is as bad as online has claimed(although I don't think Kimberly McCullough did the story justice IMO). But the problem is do what they may, this show has no heart left and balance can't change that at all. The heart left with no Laura Spencer, no Bobbie, no Quartermaines. And adding Martha Byrne, Billy Dee Williams won't change that.

    • I'm anticipating most of the cast at the Nice location for a few weeks a la the Tuscan villa for Victoria and Ashland's wedding. I don't know why they bother. I'd rather see the money going into more regular home/office sets. This party has been a bust. No secrets revealed, break ups  etc. Ugly decorations and I'm going to slam the costuming again. Just the guests heaping praise on  Nikki  like she's achieved some magnificent milestone rather than just getting a year older.

In the loving arms of his wife, Dr. Marlena Evans, John took his last breath at the end of the June 2 episode, after suffering devastating internal injuries during a lab explosion. The iconic character went out as he lived — a hero. Sensing the fans’ devastation on Monday, Marlena’s portrayer Deidre Hall posted this simple-but-powerful message to fans on Instagram: “I know. I know. Hardest day ever.”

    • Now coming into June...well...   I knew it was coming but I didn't like the start to the next round of Dani/Bill/Hayley. As the 3 A plots from the start of the show (The SilkPress storyline and Martin's Secret being the other two), it needed to be benched for a while to develop those characters and allow other characters and storylines to grow. 3 months in, Hayley is the weak link, Dani is still divisive, but not boring, and Bill has been making his mark with some plots faster than others. So last week seeing the story starting to loop back around to them with Hayley's potential pregnancy, I honestly had mixed feelings.   I get it. The SilkPress storyline is currently in aftermath/next turn mode, so it has to be moved into a C plot position. Moreso if we want to keep the very talented Miss Trish around. And I love how clever the writers are being with the storyline. They give us enough in the episodes and are still playing out beats to keep the appetite fed. I don't feel like anyone is being dumbed down to keep her around. And Trish is giving nuances in her alone scenes with NuTed. I shouldn't care for a clear psycho, but she be selling it. That said...I wish they had given us a little more of the Martin's Secret storyline in the last week of the month though I loved the game of cat and mouse Bill did on Martin and Smitty to keep the storyline alive and active after it had a nice build beginning of May and vanished for a week mid-May. And it appears like it's about to go back to the backburner as an A plot which of course leaves the A plot of Dani/Bill/Hayley.   I am probably in the minority as someone who is not anti-Dani here and even she annoyed the heck out of me last week. In character true, but I just felt like there was a way to get all of that across without it feeling like...as I've said before...one step forward, two steps back...and have it feel organic. I liked Hayley got a little bit of edge with her, but she still ain't no match for Dani. And it reminds to be seen if we should be going back to that well of a story yet.   Now about today's show...   And I thought Tracy was bad! lol. But YES. Sharon has been worth the wait. And so has Anita's story! Finally having TT in the limelight. This has been a nice slow burn for me and a nice B plot. And the actress is good. The wig is giving. And her holding what Anita's secret is over her head and threatening to tell Vernon....Ooooo...that is what I was waiting for.    And speaking of bad...I thought Eva vs Kat was a great rivalry. But I am loving the rivalry that is growing with 'Nancy Drew' and Silk Press Sheila! They both get good licks in and are so cunning with each other. And I definitely have liked that since the anniversary party, that it has been growing. Now that Kat has been proven right, she has not backed down. And neither has SilkPress. And we got a 'Ms. B@tch' moment, too? LOVE. Eva coming up with a trump card was delicious and so 90s Sami Brady. GOOD. And the coda with Jacob and the expert...YES. The Silk Press storyline has been the best paced on the show so I love that the aftermath of the anniversary party continues to be so...barring one flaw...well for me. Not enough Nicole's POV.   And I like the C plots on display. And by that, I mean Chelsea with Vernon. And it made me wonder what the writers have plan for her love life now that the throuple is over with. I was watching her and going awww.   And of course the mystery man around Martin. I am starting to wonder if he really even works at the country club given how he made a run for it. That would be a twist.    Speaking of Martin...good to see him in scenes with his father and mother.    I'm getting used to NuTed.    I felt the last episode of May was a bit of a letdown, but this was a very nice recovery.
    • Unless they cut him, I'd think he would stay. Surely, he didn't choose to return because he expected high quality. I figure he gets to work when he wants and spend a lot of time doing his own thing and being with his family.
    • The writing for Liz and Lucky is indeed terrible, but if JJ signed a one-year contract he may be gone in a couple of months anyway. Perhaps they’re just cutting their losses.
    • That would be his older sister Stacey. She was the center of a big story back in the day. Nola was out to snag medical student Kelly Nelson, who she thought would provide her with the life she craved. He was in love with a girl named Morgan. Nola plotted to get pregnant by him, but couldn't manage to get him in bed. So she seduced Floyd, who thought she was in love with him. When she knew she was pregnant, she got Kelly drunk and made sure he woke up next to her in bed. Kelly believed her when she told him he made her pregnant. They were about to elope to Las Vegas, but her mother ratted her out and Kelly abandoned her. She almost married Floyd, but jilted him at the altar. She went to work for Quint. When the baby came prematurely, Kelly saved both of them. She named the baby Kelly Louise to irk Morgan, who was now married to Kelly. When she fell in love with Quint, she had a change of heart over all the trouble she had caused, so she changed the baby's name to Anastasia Louise, shortened to Stacey. Quint was a devoted stepfather and Henry treated her like his own granddaughter.  After Quint and Nola leave SF, I believe Stacey is never seen again. Which is odd, you would think they would have brought her back with Nola and J, but they never did.
